Alight here for the visit to Dandeli Forests- Dandeli Wild life sanctuary is about 70 kms from Dharwar but connection from here is better than connection from Alnawar the nearest railway station- NWKRTC operates buses every 10 mins once to Dandeli from where the actual forest is about 10 kms away and can be reached through taxi or by pick up from the resort you intend to stay. This sanctuary us famous for the Malabar Horn bills apart from various other bird life but be careful about the Western ghats special "leeches". Its fun to see and enjoy the various games in river Kali that passes through this sanctuary. Apart from this, there are various other scenic points to watch out for in this beautiful forest range of Western ghats

Town is also famous for the paper mill located right at the enterance of the Town- The route to Dandeli is scenic and hence try to capture the seat as close to the front if you are taking the bus

Alnavar is a BIG NO as the railhead to proceed to Dandeli. It is a remote place. DWR is ideal for passengers arriving via south trains and Londa Jn is ideal railhead for passengers arriving from North, via MRJ, BGM or MAO. 'Bangurnagar' - that's the West Coast Paper Mill's official employee's colony. One of my relatives was a PA to the MD until year 2004. So I have visited Dandeli, the paper mills and also KULGI wildlife camp on many occasions - as early as 1981. I have stayed in the tented accommodations made available by the Karnataka Forest Dept. So DWR or LD and not LWR.

No. Never. I was a resident of BGM and used to travel to Dandeli by Road and not trains. And as per my know-how, Dandeli has a rail route from LWR - perhaps to facilitate the West Coast Paper Mills. However, I remember seeing a track close to the paper mills. Not sure if any passenger train did ever make any journey to and from Dandeli. Now that my relative has retired from the services from the paper mills and settled in BGM, we seldom visit Dandeli now. :)

there used to be a passenger train on that route. My mom was born and bought up in dandeli and she mentioned that to me on how she and her brother used to sit and study on Pf at night, and how they used to have a railway connection to Mumbai (not sure of this) back then. That route is currently only used by paper mills now, and once in a while you can hear the hoot of an alco as it approaches the mill. :)
