If you're going from Indore/Ujjain to New Delhi and the Intercity train is full and the Malwa train shows "waiting" until New Delhi, you can book a ticket until Ambala cantt junction. Most days, you'll find trains with either available tickets or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation). In fact, if you book up to 4 W/L (Waiting List) tickets just before the chart is prepared, you still have a good chance of getting an RAC ticket in 3rd AC (tested just 30 minutes before the chart was prepared around 9 am).
