One single WAG9/9H can easily handle loads that usually require 2 WAG5's. As CLW is increasing the WAG9 production year-by-year, the WAG5's are being modified for passenger use (All it takes is re-wiring the Traction motors to 6P ). G7 will continue in the freight service for a long time. But the WAG5 class can soon replace the WAM class as a good mixed-use locomotive due to the relative ease with which the TM's can be re-configured to suite various purposes.

It's not the traction motors that are being modified but the gear ratios, just like how the gear ratio of a WAG9 was changed resulting in the birth of a WAP7. Gear ratios used on WAG5 locos :-
1. 62:16
2. 62:15
3. 17:77 (few of them)
4.
...
58:21(WAG5P)
5. 64:18
Variants like WAG5HA, HB have Hitachi HS15250 motors and are comparatively more powerful when compared to the older G5 locos with TAO659 motors (4300 HP vs 3900HP).

I just meant that they can be modified to suit passenger operations better by simply changing the traction motor connections to all parallel ( and weak field) without changing the TM's or any other equipment. Obviously changing the gear ratio will make them better by increasing the maximum speed, but even with just a simple re-wiring of the connections they can serve passenger operations better.

AFAIK, all WAG5 locos have 6P connections.
