Many a times I have seen people were debating over late running of trains in NCR. I never get involved in any of these debates. Last week I went to visit my maternal aunt(Mausi) in Allahabad for some family function. My maternal Uncle (Mausa) works in NCR as a senior sectional engineer. So, it was a golden opportunity for me to ask him why trains run late in railways, especially in NCR? Discussion was very healthy and interesting. He told me railway tracks are over-saturated with traffic in NCR. Every year railways starts new trains on existing infrastructure which was originally designed to handle less than quarter of traffic(1/4) of present day. Right now NCR tracks are 400% saturated, than it was originally designed. He also told me that 70% of revenue are generated from freight traffic and Railways incures loss from passenger traffic from very first day of operation. He...

also discuss priority of trains in NCR. Summary are as follows (As he narrated to me):
Priority 1: Rajdhani Exp, Shatabdi Exp, Durnoto Exp and other 130 Kmph certified trains gets top priority. NCR specially defined “running window” for premier trains like Rajdhani Exp, Shatabdi Exp, Durnoto Exp trains. During this time no others trains are allowed on mainline. This is the reason East bound Rajdhanis from NDLS departs back to back (With few exceptions.). NCR adopts a policy of full clearance of next 20 kms on mainline for 130 kmph rated trains. That means every train in next 20 kms will be looped and 130 kmph train will get go ahead signal (green signal). VIP movement (Railway Minister, DRM, GM) special trains also comes in this category.
Priority2: Rapid freight trains. These trains contain items which scheduled to deliver within 24 hrs (NDLS-HWH and Vice-versa) such as seafood, etc. These trains are insured against any delay and if any delay caused, railway bound to pay insured amount to the client. Fare charged by the railways for these kind of trains are also higher than regular freight trains. Railway employees mocks these trains as “Freight Rajdhani”. These trains are rated at MPS of 110 kmph.
Priority3: On time running Superfast Trains.
Priority4: On time running Exp trains.
Priority5: Pre-scheduled freight trains. Trains are rated at MPS of 110 kmph.
Priority6: Late running Superfast Trains.
Priority7: On time passenger trains.
Priority8: Late running Exp trains.
Priority9: Pre-scheduled freight trains. Trains are rated at MPS of 75 kmph.
Priority10: Late running passenger trains.
Priority11: Unscheduled freight trains.
