Never take an auto. Book a cab if you're not comfortable with public transport. I repeat for the sake of your hard earned money. NEVER take an auto.

Not in all south Indian cities, never faced any problem in Hyderabad or Bangalore.
We also experienced the same in 2014. Having deboarded by 50 min late running nzm mas duronto, our rmm express departing at 2135 from egmore was sure shot going to be missed. But noticing the luggage, ladies pax and seeming unawareness about chennai, he promised that he will get us catch the train, we reached egmore in 20 minutes missing the train but he charged whopping 400 rs for the same. After that, sensing this loot we searched another auto to go to koyambedu in just 250rs

I was also looted in chennei. From MS to MAS they charged 400 .
