If you have to travel from Nainital/Kathgodam to Kolkata , then kindly don't take this train directly even if the seats are available , irrespective of class.
Instead book this train from KGM to LJN (For this journey you can opt any class), and from Lucknow to Kolkata , book Whichever train you are getting confirmed seat:
1. Upasana/Kumbh Express. (Class doesn't matters as SL class is also very safe and good to travel).

Doon Express. (Book only AC. Never go for SL class)
3. Punjab Mail. (Book AC class only. Non AC class are pathetically crowded).
If you opt for this break journey , the benefits are:
1. Your precious nearly 7-8 hrs of extra journey will be saved.
2. You will be saved by the pathetic crowd comprising of unreserved passengers and WL holders in Bagh express between LJN and CPR.
Your Journey should be:
Board the Bagh Exp train from KGM , go to your seat , take a sound sleep , and deboard the train at LJN.
Freshen up yourself at Waiting room in LJN/LKO , do your breakfast, and then go to LKO.
Board your Train (Any one of the above 3) and reach Howrah by next day early morning.
PS: I have guided for Lucknow as a change over point because the buffer time here is perfect with perfect amount of amenities. Whereas if you take MB or BE as your change over point , then your night's sleep will be wasted. This change-over "life saving" trip has been done numerous times by me and by my dad also (when he was there in Kasauni).

Agreed. Bagh takes a very circuitous route to cover the same distance. I have travelled in SL class of both Doon and Punjab Mail[13005]; the condition was only average down there; it was packed as usual with moderate cleanliness[though still better than Bagh since in the LJN-GKP NER section, SL tickets are issued from counters and the coach gets quite full].

But still Punjab main was very very very pathetic crowded between SPN-BSB in SL coaches.
And now even the Punctuality the has got worse for Mail.
Once i remember , Due to this Poor punctuality of Mail , I missed my east coast express from HWH.
Now You can understand ki mail se aane mein kitna time lag gaya ki Eastcoast tak miss ho

It was crowdy back when I travelled too; though not to the extremes. I reached my destination[Durgapur] with a delay of 1.5 hr that time[it was summer time]. It's quite a old train and used to get decent priority earlier. Don't know what happened to it recently.

I am also surprised. But as far i observed is it was delayed between LKO-BSB and it was made to enter BSB with a delay of 2hrs.
It suffers badly between LKO-BSB due to single line and Huge amount of tiny tiny halts.
Aur ek baar MGS delayed enter hui , then there is NO way to escape this accumulated delay. sabse bura tab laga jab Kashi station pe we waited for nearly 20 minutes just to get overtaken by itself 1hr delayed ALY HWH Vibhuti express but again the Priority Mail

got in its home zone ER is brilliant. We overtook Vibhuti through the Triple line between BWN and HWH , and arrived HWH ahead.
