Can anyone tell how far is the beach from Railway Station? What are the transportation opportunities to go there?

The railway station is situated in New Digha. So, New Digha sea beach is very close to it. It should be 5-10 mins walking. Old Digha beach will be around 2-4 kms from the station, and you will get those popular 3 wheeler man-driven cycle rickshaws there.

Google Maps gives no info regarding the transportation scenario[for small places]. Moreover local people have greater and more up to date knowledge than google Maps[especially for smaller towns such as this]. And in either case, I am asking a genuine question that is of concern to me[and maybe to future travellers].And yes, I know of Google Maps but there is no harm in cor-relating and/or getting improved information than that.

Is there any difference between the two beaches? Which one would be a better place to visit for a first timer?

Undoubtedly for a first timer, New Digha Beach should be the top priority, particularly if you are planning to go inside the sea (and that's of course :) ). Bathing in Old Digha has been illegal now-a-days and it's risky as well. Better to stay in New Digha, and drop by at Old Digha any time in the afternoon or evening.
Please enjoy freshly prepared fried fish and jhalmuri at Old Digha sea shore with evening breeze. (I hope you are non-vegetarian :P )
