BJP president Amit Shah and Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley are expected to present in the next couple of days a draft on possible concessions to Andhra Pradesh to make up for its loss on account of the bifurcation of the State in 2014.
The two along with the Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu and TDP representative in the Modi Council of Ministers Y. Satyanarayana (Sujana) Chowdary met here to consider ways and means to address the grievances of AP on a variety of issues.
There is no clarity yet on
what the Centre could offer short of Special Category Status, which the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had promised in Parliament when the AP Reorganisation Bill was debated towards the fag end of his tenure. The meeting, which lasted over an hour, took note of the recent developments in the State as the clamour for SCS engineered by the Opposition parties is growing by the hour making it difficult for Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to explain as to why despite being a coalition partner at the Centre, he cannot influence the Narendra Modi government to come to the aid of the beleaguered State.
Mr. Naidu, at a roadshow in Chittor district on Sunday, vented his frustration over the inaction of the Centre.
According to sources in the TDP, after the meeting on Tuesday, the Union Finance Minister spoke to Mr. Naidu on the draft which is under preparation. The meeting also discussed the issue related to release of funds for the Polavaram project, declared a national project, and creation of a separate railway zone for A.P. with Visakhapatnam as headquarters. At his meeting in Chittoor district, Mr. Naidu had said that his party would not hesitate to ‘wage a direct fight’ with the Centre if it failed to honour the demands of people.
