If we consider the trans-bangladesh route, which was operational in pre independence era, the route could be considerably shorter as compared to malda guwahati lumding badarpur route. Indian government was trying to establish rail connections to 7 sister states trans bangladesh to save travel time. Don't know what happened to those talks !!

Nope...india uproots old tracks and relays new ones because they use heavier rails for broad gauge and lighter ones for metre gauge

Not necessarily. We already have international train connections with bangladesh. Bi weekly maitree express via Gede has nice patronage. And it's gates are sealed throughout the journey
But still operation of trains through an unstable neighbor would be a challenging task. Passengers security would be at stake.
