If we consider the trans-bangladesh route, which was operational in pre independence era, the route could be considerably shorter as compared to malda guwahati lumding badarpur route. Indian government was trying to establish rail connections to 7 sister states trans bangladesh to save travel time. Don't know what happened to those talks !!

Humare yaha ise Jugad kehte hai...:D BTW I fear that trans Bangladesh Rail link can cause huge illegal migrant inflow in India.
