APU is a small engine that takes over from the main diesel engine when the loco is idling. Since this engine is smaller and thus operating at close to rated capacity (engine requirements at idling are very less, like keeping BC recharged, battery at full charge etc.) its efficiency is better and thus utilizes fuel more efficiently than when the main engine has to do the job. saves around 10 Ltr diesel per hour as far as i know.
