In air travel also, you get the chance to choose your preferred seat either at the time of web check-in or at the time of generating your boarding pass. During my several air travels most the times I get my favorite seat except for few so this one seems to be a retrogressive move by the Railways.
आप नकारात्मक सोच से बाहर निकलने की कोशिश कीजिये ये काफी घातक मानसिक बीमारी है, पहली बात तो रेलवे स्वयं आपको SMS से सूचित करेगा कोच और बर्थ का नंबर इसके अलावा भी ट्रैन आने से घंटों पहले चार्ट तैयार हो जाता हैऔर उसके बाद आप PNR नंबर से NTES और IRCTC से ऑनलाइन मालूम कर सकते हैं और ,SMS से भी PNR स्टेटस चेक कर सकते हैं ।

Very valid points, but the move is definitely in the right direction, and can be modified to improve the quality of service.
For starters, instead of allotting all the berths in one go at the time of chart preparation or allocating berths dynamically at the time of booking, they can be allotted in batches, each new batch being allocated berths and seats after a predetermined number of bookings are done. But care should be taken that the last batch of confirmed tickets is allotted well before the date of journey, so that passengers with confirmed tickets do not have to panic.
