Yes, a very useful suggestion indeed. There's no direct train from Varanasi to Shirdi, however I think Varanasi Mysuru, Manduadih Pune and Varanasi Hubli go through that route. So, there's not much of a connection problem for Shridi. Unlike Somnath where the nearest connection for Varanasi is Rajkot (Okha- Varanasi express, that too a weekly)

I don't think as of now there's a huge demand for Shridi Varanasi connection, I live in Pune and I regularly go to Shirdi, met many people from UP there and they unanimously said that they find it easy to catch train from Kopargaon and especially Manmad. Also a lot of passengers have been taken over by Bus services which are a definite hit among people, they prefer to take a bus rather than wait for confirm tickets in trains, as they could stop buses at any point, have healthy food at restaurants enroute, etc.
