The design of 4000 hp WDP4 class of locomotives, fitted with two nos. three axle
bogies each having A-A-1 axle arrangement, was transferred to Indian Railway by Mfs. General
Motors, USA. The General arrangement and bogie general arrangement of the locomotive has
been shown in General Motor's drawing Nos. LO20792 & LA0087064 respectively. The

axle load of the locomotive is 19.3. The locomotive has been designed for a
maximum speed of 180 km/h and is intended for hauling of passenger trains up to maximum
speed of 160 km/h on Rajdhani standard track (C&M-I, Vo1.-I) and up to 105 km/h on
Mainline standard track. Locomotive has been cleared for operation up to 160 km/h on
Rajdhani and up to 105 krnh on mainline routes vide this office letter of even nos. dated 29-12-
2008 and 30- 10-2002 and followed by amendment dated 03-03-2003.

4500 hp locomotives with twin cab and Six AC traction motors are being manufactured
by DLW to exploit speed potential up to 140 kmph. The locomotive has been designated as
WDP4D vide Railway Board's letter no. 2002/M(L)/466/44/8 (NC) dated 19-08-2009. The

general arrangement of the locomotive has been shown in RDSO drawing no. SK.DL- 4686
(A1t.-b). Provision of twin cab has sufficiently improved the visibility for crew and fitment of
Six TM's has also improved top notch tractive effort and closer dispersion of tractive effort at
higher notches. The locomotive is fitted with 16 cylinders 710 G3B diesel engine with AC-AC
transmission and two HTSC fabricated Co-Co bogies as per RDSO bogie general arrangement
drawing no. SK.VL.- 609 and bogie suspension arrangement to drawing no. SK.VL.- 610. With
the use of fabricated bogie, and optimized under frame, an axle load of 20.5 t has been
maintained despite accommodating an additional cab at radiator end.

In order to establish the speed potential of WDP4D locomotive on track maintained to
other than C&M-I Vo1.-I standard, detailed oscillation trials have been conducted over Nagda -
Ujjain -Bairagarh section of Western Railway up to maximum test speed of 115 km/h. The test
results as contained in RDSO Report no. 1094/F Rev.-0 amendment Nil dated 15-03-2011
indicate that WDP4D locomotive has exhibited satisfactory riding and stability characteristics
u to maximum test speed of 115 krnh on straight track , station yard and up to 100 km/h on
2 curve on track maintained to other than C&M-I Vole-Istandard.
Based on the test results, it is certified that operation of single/double headed WDP4D
class of locomotives may be permitted to run up to a maximum speed of 105 km/h on
straight track & station yard and up to 90 k m h on 2' curve track maintained to other
than C&M-I Vo1.-I standard, subject to the following conditions:
