This is regarding the proposed changes to tatkal reservation system:
.
Insisting on details of id proof of each of the passengers at the time of booking and restricting the number of passengers to 4 from the present 6 are welcome. But reducing the advance reservation period from 2 days to 1 day is not desirable. Some of the long distance journeys last more than one or two days. So anybody would desire to have confirmed return journey plans. Particularly when proceeding for attending wedding or other family/religious functions, the return journey would

be on the same day. It will not be possible to book the ticket while on the move on the train by everybody. The IR has to be requested to reconsider the change.

ID/Part 1 dated 13.12.2011 (Commercial Circular No. 69 of2011) on the
subject quoted above.
2. Instances have been brought t6 the notice of this office by a zonal
Railwa~c.regarding inconvenience faced by them in this regard on following
account:
(i) Some photo identity cards issued by State Government for their
employees do not contain any number for capturing the same in the
system. When these are rejected by the ECRC at the booking counter,
the sameresultsin complaints.
(ii) In some of the ration cards issued by the State Governments, the
photograph of the head of the family is only available and not of all the
family members. Therefore, in the absence of the photograph of the
passenger performing the journey, this being accepted as a proof of
identity af the time of booking Tatkal ticket. This also resulted in
complaints.
3. The matter was examined and it has been decided as under:
(i) Only those photo identity cards issued by Central/State Government
should be accepted which are having serial number.
(ii) Ration card should be accepted as proof of identity for undertaking
journey under Tatkal scheme only if the passenger whose photograph is
available on the ration card is travelling.
3.1 The above said clarifications are also applicable in case of proofs of

On the basis of circular as provided at /blog/post/280521/105
it can thus be concluded that ration card/s can be produced as relevant identity proof while booking Tatkal Tickets. However, it should be mandatory for the Ration Card to contain the photographs for the person who are willing to undertake the journey and are keen to produce Ration Card while booking and while cross-checking in the train!!
Also, it should be noted that only those identity cards issued by State/Central Government should be accepted which are having serial number/s.
