Agree, that might be one of the reason. Now most of tracks are getting doubled and electrified also in near future. If trains remains same then obviously punctuality will be there, unless new trains started every year.
Track doubled and electrified in Mysore Bangalore section. However all trains take minimum 2-1/2 hours to 3 hours in the section, meaning average of around 50 kms speed. Add 15 minutes slack to get more punctuality.
Compare MAS KPD SA section. 340 kms in 4-4.5 hours by most of the trains.

Also MAJN/ MAQ to Kannur. 132 kms (comparable to MYS SBC distance). 26 trains take less than 2 hours.
Right, not even ghat in between Mys-Sbc, still SWR taks more than 2 hrs for express trains, need to upgrade TT.
