The shortest route to BBS is totally different from any that the current BBS Rajdhani takes, be it via Adra or Tata or via Sambalpur. It will bypass CNB-ALD-MGS, the shortest. Why doesn't this Rajdhani take the technically shortest route any day?MPS problems?
It's called lobbying effect. Once a convention gets spotlight it's hard to switch to new efficient when available. This has been a core nature in our national culture.
Railways being a government laid-back-work-culture body, comes up with enormous excuses to label better efficacies as not feasible. Similar multiple cases do exist. For eg. RNC/PRR - HWH doesn't have a single train on the shortest path even though it's very feasible.

The shortest route of Ranchi - Purulia - Howrah would involve a Loco reversal at Purulia, though, right?
Yes. 35% trains incl. Freights undergo reversal at PRR. Not a big deal.
