if you would like to visit Hornadu and want to do a train journey , I suggest catch a day train going to mangalore get down at hassan and the bus stand is behind railway station and catch a bus to hornadu via chikanglur balhonour kalasa hornadu
Option 2 would be take a night train to shimoga get down at Anandapuram from their hornadu is 137 kms for both the option distance is the same or from shimoga go to thirthalli from thier srigneri is 50 kms and Hornadu is 79 kms

year i visit srigneri and hornadu i choose the option 2 take a night train to Anandpuram from thier thirthalli is 56 Kms approx 1 hour and from thier you can go to hornadu or sringeri
Alos on this route lot of private buses play every one hour and the route is quite good
