The project basically was a 229 kilometres (142 mi) long 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) metre gauge line linking Fakiragram with Kishanganj. It ran through Alipurduar. The route was converted to 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad gauge in 2003-2006. Northeast Frontier Railway converted the Alipurduar-Bamanhat branch line to 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) Broad gauge in 2007.
