Barrackpore: A middle-aged woman was arrested for allegedly throwing her baby daughter off a running train on the Sealdah-Ranaghat section on Monday morning. While the 16-month-old girl is in hospital in a critical condition, her mother has reportedly told the GRP that a goddess had told her to give up her child.
The incident occurred around 10.50am after the Up Krishnagar local left Naihati. As the train chugged on towards Halisahar, passengers were shocked to see the woman suddenly flinging the baby on the tracks. After getting over their initial sense of disbelief, one of them pulled the chain. As the train came to a halt, some of them ran towards the spot where the child had been thrown off. They heaved a sigh of relief to see her alive, rescued by some slum dwellers living along the railway tracks.
The girl, however, received several deep wounds on her head, legs and arms and was taken to Naihati State General Hospital at once. The passengers also caught her mother, Purnima Saha, and handed her over to the GRP.

“The woman was standing near the door with the girl, Mamani, in her arms. As the train was crossing ‘Barda Bridge’ between Naihati and Halisahar stations, the woman suddenly flung the girl off the train. No one got the time to stop her. Even those who caught her later were taken aback to see her behaving as if nothing had happened. She showed no remorse,” said Somenath Paul, a witness.
Ram Ratan Prasad, a slum dweller who was standing near his shanty beside the railway track, also saw the incident. “We were completely stunned. After shouting out to alert other people, we ran to see if the little girl could be saved. Fortunately, she had landed on

a bush and survived. She was bleeding from her head and arms,” Prasad said.
The girl was admitted to Naihati Hospital in a critical condition. Doctors said she received two stitches on the head and was recovering slowly.
The Naihati GRP arrested Saha, who reportedly told them that she had been instructed by Ma Tara (the goddess of Tarapith temple) in a dream to give up her child. “Every time she was questioned she said, ‘Ma Tara told me in the dream, either sacrifice your daughter or die’,” said a senior Naihati GRP official. “She claimed she was on her way to Tarapith temple as instructed by the goddess. But we could not believe her as her statement had several inconsistencies,” the official added.
The GRP has come to know from her that her husband Krishna Saha lives in Subhas Pally near Nadia’s Kalyani and sells lottery tickets for a living. The couple has another daughter Mumpi, a Class IX student.
Police suspect Saha is suffering from depression, which could have led her to commit the crime. “We are trying to find out why she tried to kill her daughter. We are also investigating whether she is depressed. We are also trying to contact her family members,” an investigating officer said.
