AN ATTEMPTED RAILFANNING THAT WENT HORRIBLY ASTRAY
The Bangalore - Mumbai railway line goes alongside my apartment complex at Hoysalanagar just past the nondescript Chennasandra Stn. I get an elevated view of the track from my flat but not good enough to satiate my desires as a railfan. Little wonder that I decided to go closer to the track, a little ahead of my complex, for a better look, which ultimately proved to be too close for my comfort and ended up with a narrow escape from danger.

evening and I tried to find a way to get as near as possible to the railway track in order to have a glimpse of the majestic NDLS-bound Karnataka Express. To reach the vantage point I had to negotiate on foot a kuccha road leading from the 4th or 5th Main of T.C.Palya Main Road, Ramamurthy Nagar to a mound overlooking the rail line. Between the road and the track was a slum which I had to cross to reach my destination.
Just as I crossed the narrow path that led to the slum, I was in for a rude shock. I was accosted by 3 young toughs one of whom placed his hand on my shoulder in a vice-like grip and another caught hold of my left hand. The third fella was facing me and launched a torrent of abuse in Kannada. Suddenly he snatched my mobile which was in my right hand. After I could recover from the initial shock, I asked in Hindi " Yeh, kya ho raha hai ? ". My question was greeted with another barrage of abuse. Fortunately I could not understand what they were trying to achieve or the meaning of the abuses. After some time I gently said " Kannada gothilla ", the only 2 words I know in the local language. The abusive one in the group asked me what language I knew and I said English and Tamil. He then went on to state in Tamil that 2 of the water tankers, quite of a few which were parked in the open area adjoining the slum, were missing and feared to have been stolen. And that I was considered a PRIME SUSPECT, having been caught loitering near the parking lot. They said that I would not be allowed to leave the place till the police arrived and took me into custody. And only then would my mobile be handed over to me. They asked me what was my purpose in entering that area. My attempts to explain to them that I was trying to approach the track for the purpose of railfanning (Well I didn't use that word) cut no ice. In fact it only made matters worse and one of them asked in Tamil, WHAT WAS THE NEED TO COME ALL THE WAY THERE JUST TO SEE A TRAIN GO BY. However, with the passage of time and the lack of much reaction/response from my side, better sense prevailed among the group which had then increased to about 10 members.
By now , I felt mildly amused and realized that it was a case of mistaken identity. 7 or 8 minutes had passed by then and I started telling them in Tamil, that I felt sorry for their loss but was in no way responsible for what had happened. I asked them to accompany me to my flat where the security personnel would confirm my identity as a retired Bank Officer. They then asked me details about where I lived and finally after 10 mns let me go free with a strict warning not to come anywhere near their slum, whether for railfanning or otherwise.
At the end of the episode I am not too sure whether I was more relieved or amused. It was a probably a mixture of both :)

Normally we see the IR site click here which does not show important aspect of Passenger Facilities very elaboratly.
IRCTC.co.in does show RR rooms on station but you can not see the numbers and rates and types unless you have PNR with you...

whereas the link click here shows rates and types of RR/dorm available at stations, if you know the Zone the task is easy to locate....

अभियान को सबसे बड़ी सफलता दक्षिण मध्य रेलवे में मिली है जहां साढ़े 60 हजार मुसाफिरों से एक करोड़ 21 लाख से अधिक का जुर्माना वसूला गया है।
पंजाब, हरियाणा, जम्मू कश्मीर और उत्तर प्रदेश को संभालने वाला उत्तर रेलवे अभियान में दूसरे स्थान पर रहा है। उत्तर रेलवे ने 48 हजार से अधिक लोगों पर 45 लाख से अधिक का जुर्माना ठोका। उत्तर प्रदेश के अन्य हिस्सों को संचालित करने वाले उत्तर मध्य रेलवे ने तकरीबन 15 हजार लोगों को पकड़कर 19 लाख का जुर्माना ठोका, जबकि उत्तर पूर्व रेलवे ने 5300 लोगों पर पौने आठ लाख का जुर्माना लगाया।
रेलवे की ओर से ट्रेनों और रेलवे स्टेशनों पर गंदगी फैलाने वालों पर 500 रुपये या उससे अधिक का जुर्माना लगाने की व्यवस्था की गई है। रेलवे के जनरल मैनेजरों को जिम्मेदारी सौंपी गई है।

Bharuch police and administration have taken number of steps for orderly movement of vehicles over Sardar Bridge and Golden Bridge. Still, people from Surat prefer early morning trains like Gujarat Queen to reach Ahmedabad than get stuck up for hours.
" I had to cancel my trip to Ahmedabad last week after I got to know there was a massive jam on Narmada bridge. I could not get seat in tatkal quote of Gujarat Queen," said Velji Sheta, president of Surat Builders Association.
Earlier, the real estate developers used to request chief minister's office in Gandhinagar. However, they now prefer to ask for her appointment when she is in South Gujarat.
Some businessmen who travel frequently to Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar have started taking longer route of tribal highway.
"I have travelled up to Vadodara from tribal highway via Bardoli- Rajpipla-Dabhoi during my last three trips. It takes an hour more but we are sure we will reach our destination in time," said Siddesh Dalsania, a real estate dealer.
According to an estimate, nearly 40,000 vehicles pass through Narmada bridge daily, of which 20,000 are cars and more than 60 per cent of these vehicles are from Surat city or district.

CHANDIGARH: Several trains were delayed in Punjab today after Congress workers led by the party's state unit chief Partap Singh Bajwa staged a 'rail roko' in several parts of the state, protesting against the "deteriorating" law and order situation and "tardy" procurement of wheat.
Bajwa along with his supporters squatted on the Amritsar-New Delhi railway track at Sirhind and protested against the alleged "lawlessness" in the state.

MP Ravnit Bittu along with Congress MLAs Surinder Dawar and Bharat Bhushan, accompanied by Congress supporters sat on the rail track in Ludhiana and stopped several trains including Shatabdi.
Congress supporters were also protesting against the "tardy" procurement of wheat from grain markets in the state, accusing the SAD-BJP led government of its failure in ensuring smooth and hassle-free purchase of crop.
Railway officials said that because of the 'rail roko' agitation, about 15 trains got delayed.
Officials said that the impact of 'rail roko' was visible in Ludhiana, Beas, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Jalandhar, Ajitwal and Ferozepur, among other areas.
"There has been an adverse impact on the movement of 10-15 trains because of the agitation," Northern Railways, Divisional Railway Manager (Ferozpur), Anuj Prakash said.
The Railway official appealed to the Congress protesters not to stop trains as it causes great inconvenience to passengers, besides causing national loss.
Meanwhile, a report from Phagwara said a large number of Congress activists of Kapurthala district, led by DCC President and MLA Navtej Singh Cheema, today squatted dharna on the rail tracks there as part of their statewide programme of 'rail roko'.
PPCC General Secretary Joginder Singh Mann, party's Doaba Zone President and MLA Tarlochan Singh Soondh, Spokesman Sukhpal Singh Khaira, also joined the dharna and addressed protesters along with Cheema.
The protesters sat on track from 12 noon to 1 pm. They raised anti-government slogans during their agitation and also carried placards mentioning, "Badal-Modi, Kisan Virodhi, Dalit Virodhi" (Both PM Narendra Modi and CM Parkash Singh Badal are anti-farmer and anti-dalit).
They also demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal and Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal for the Moga bus incident in which a teenage girl was killed after being allegedly molested and thrown off with her mother from a moving bus, belonging to the ruling Badal family in Punjab.
"Since the Orbit Aviation company was owned by Sukhbir Badal, he and its other owners should be interrogated in the same way as the officials of Uber Taxi service were questioned in connection with the alleged rape by a cab driver in New Delhi sometime back," they demanded.

581 kilometers per hour was set in December 2003. A spokeswoman at the company, known as JR Central, said the new record is likely to be short-lived, since the next test ride on Tuesday might see the train break 600 kilometers per hour.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is set to talk up Japan’s train prowess on a visit to the U.S. starting April 26. Mr. Abe’s trip includes a stop in California, which is planning a high-speed rail line.
JR Central has said it wants to export the maglev technology to the U.S. for a Washington-New York train link—a project Mr. Abe has said Japan would help finance.
According to JR Central, the test run was conducted to check the performance of the cars and had 29 technicians aboard. Passengers won’t experience the record-breaking speed even after the line opens for business, which is supposed to happen in 2027. The company has projected that the trains will operate at a maximum speed of 505 kilometers per hour.
The Japanese government in October approved the construction of what will be the world’s fastest train line, which will connect Tokyo and Nagoya in about 40 minutes, less than half the time that the shinkansen bullet trains require today.

Then what about china...??china is two times bigger thqn india and has even laid rail tracks upto lhasa...and every years adds 1000 km rail line to its rail network....i know trains cant run at 600 kmph practically and can run only on test tracks..but ir should speed up it's trains to atleast 100 kmph(average speed).
