BENGALURU: To make good for the delay in introduction of a suburban rail service, the Bangalore Railway Division recently announced a list of trains to partially cover a segment of the proposed suburban route. In this connection, two Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) services to Whitefield will be run at timings convenient to IT professionals from January 17.
According to railway sources, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu will be coming to the city to flag off these services along with three services from here to Ramanagara on January 16. “The trains will be flagged off on January 16 evening and will run a short trip. The actual commercial run will begin the next morning (January 17),” they said.

of the services will run exclusively to Whitefield while the second service will stop at Whitefield enroute Kuppam. Three pairs of trains to Ramanagara, two of them evening trains, will also be launched on that day.
The MEMU to Whitefield will leave Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna railway station at 8.45 am and reach Whitefield at 9.40 am. In the return direction, it will leave Whitefield at 10.30 am and reach KSR at 11.10 am. The second train will leave KSR at 11.20 am and reach Kuppam at 1.45 pm. It will leave Kuppam at 2.45 pm and return to KSR at 5.20 pm. The trains will stop at Cantonment, Bengaluru East, Baiyappanahalli, KR Puram and Hoodi stations in both directions.
“With the Suburban Draft Policy making the state government solely responsible for putting in place a suburban network and calling for new infrastructure solely for suburban trains, Railways is now relived of playing the key role in putting in place the suburban service,” added a railway official.
The services between KSR and Ramanagara will have stops at Nayandahalli, Kengeri, Hejjala and Bidadi.
The timings of the proposed morning service is as follows: leave KSR at 5.20 am and reach Ramanagara at 6.15 am; In the return direction, leave Ramanagaram at 7 am and KSR at 8.40 am.

NEW DELHI: Semi-high speed train between Chennai and Bengaluru can reduce the travel time between two cities to less than 3 hours and would need an investment of Rs 3200 crore to convert the existing tracks to run trains at 160 kmph, according to a feasibility study report submitted by Chinese company.

cost at Rs 4350 crore for upgrading the entire section between Chennai and Mysore and it will cut down the time from existing 7 hours to 4 hour and 45 minutes, about 2hour and 15 minutes less. The cost for Chennai- Bengaluru section has been pegged at Rs 3200 crore and time taken by train running at 160 kmph will be 2 hour 50 minutes.
Presently, the fastest train on the section Shatabdi Express between Chennai and Mysuru via Bengaluru runs at 90 kmph and takes 7 hour to cover the journey. It takes 4 hour and 50 minutes to cover distance between Chennai and Bangalore.
According to railways, Mysore-Bengaluru-Chennai is the toughest section due to difficult terrain and hills especially the Mysore-Bengaluru route.
The study has suggested several engineering changes to increase the speed from 80 kmph to 160 kmph. It ranges from changes in signaling, track, level crossing, rebuilding bridges and fencing the section among others.
According to a senior railway official, major changes are needed between Bengaluru-Mysuru.
“The whole corridor can be taken in two phases and first we can take Chennai-Bengaluru section and Bengaluru-Mysuru section can be taken in second phase,” said the officer.
Railway has suggested several changes in the report and has asked Chinese company to incorporate the same before submitting the final report.

Spending Rs. 3200 crore on just upgradation of the saturated Chennai-Banglore line to 160kmph is a wastage of money. Even after spending so much, there shall be hardly any improvement in sectional capacity, only a few trains shall be running at 160 kmph every day which shall be overtaking and slowing down more trains along the route.
With similar investment, a straight, shorter(about 270-290 km against present 360km) and much faster MAS-SBC route can can be created by constructing about 300km long line in following format. -Additional 130 km line parallel to existing line from MAS to Katpadi, 70 km new straight chord line between katpadi to Bangarpet (instead to much circuitous route via jolarpet and about 70 km line parallel

New line shall avoid curves and may take a detour if required from existing line. The new line be shorter by about 70-90 kms and shall permit more than 160kmph speed without any speed restrictions. The journey time of Shatabdi type Gatiman type train shall come down to less than 2 hrs 30 minutes only and a huge additional capacity shall be generated along the route to take care of anticipated future traffic for several years. More over there shall still be scope to increase the speed further to 180/200 due to better track geometry of the additional line.
