Some information on the future of Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS)
1. The station could act as a satellite station to Ernakulam Jn., which unlike the case of Kochuveli( Trains from Kochuveli skip the main station Trivandrum, plus the station remains inaccessible by public vehicle) will not skip Ernakulam Jn. And has amble bus / boat connectivity.
2. The cost needed to revamp the station would
not that high, since mainline is intact, partly due to active goods services, and platforms are in good shape too.
3. The line serve Cochin port which now rely on bulk cargo for its survival. Bulk cargo like coal used to get transported by train. But due to non-electrified line from Ernakulam to Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS) the cost of transportation has increased and thus ships have started skipping Cochin port there by bringing down revenues of both railways and port. Once if the Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS) passenger terminal gets an impetus, then the line may get electrified so that the Cochin port could survive in future.
4. Even though lot of trains used to start from Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS) the station got abandoned later. This happened since only some long distance trains started from there.Once the commuter trains(passenger & day time express ) are extended the station could attract daily passengers, which will ensure that the station will not meet the same fate as today in future

1.Two platforms and lines are in good shape
2.Both the platforms have roofing
3.Platform length roughly 330m.That would mean a 15-coach train could be easily accommodated.
4.The station is located in between two main bus routes on Willingdon Island,Kochi. There is a bus stop in front of the station.
5.There is ample space available for constructing more platforms and other amenities.
6.The terminal jetty located about 1 km from the station is another way to access the station.
7.Mattancheri wharf(from which most passenger ships operate is very near Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS).
8.The passenger trains from Ernakulam to Kottayam , Kayamkulam , Shornur , Kollam , Guruvayur could be oeprated from Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS) with the existing facilities.(Allapuzha-Kayamkulam Passenger not included).Paltform berthing would not be an issue at all.
9.The line could bring revenue for railways from freight
1.Navy's objection to electrify the line from Ernakulam Jn. to Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS).
2.The level crossing on the national highway may turn into an issue in future if more trains are operated from Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS).
3.Poor patronage for the trains from Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS) in the past may not encourage railways to operate long distance and express trains.
4.The station’s yard needs to be extended to accommodate express trains. No fund has been allocated to the station in the last many years.
5.Trains to Allapuzha will have loco reversal at Ernakulum Jn.(not necessary for MEMU)
6. There are no concrete moves from any quarters to support the cause of Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS).

It is not the Cochin Harbur Terminus (CHTS) going to be developed as satelllite station for Ernakulam but the old and first station of Ernakulam city, Ernakulam Terminus Station which was abandonded in 2000 (near High Court)used by goods will be converted into a hub for long distance trains.

If so many sabarimala specials could be operated from Kollam Junction,I see no reason why 13351/13352 Dhanbad express, 16042/16041 Chennai Express could not be extended to Kollam. If these trains are extended then it would bring much relief to the passengers especially in the Allappuzha-Kayamkulam Stretch. Also the daily commuters from Ernakulam will get enough benefits too.

reinstate the train's service to Cochin harbour terminus (CHTS). It would give connectivity between two ports

Anyone knows about the future of Cochin Harbour Terminus (CHTS) railway station in Kochi ? Is the railways actually planning to resume services from the station as the new bridge enroute is almost completed?

Cochin Harbour Terminus as of now is closed. No passenger trains operate. The Cochin goods adjacent to it is still operational is an important means of revenue.Passenger service existed till 2004 in the form of Cochin Harbour Terminus-Shornur Junction[56606/56607/56608/56609] passenger. But then the Venduruthy bridge, that provided connection from mainland to Willingdon Island where the station is located, got damaged after a dredger hit it.The bridge was declared unfit for service, but goods trains still use it.Also to note the Ernakulam jn.(ERS)-Cochin Harbour Terminus(CHTS) was approved for electrification when the electrification in the region was taken up some years ago.But the line is located very near to the naval airport at Willingdon island. The navy objected the construction of high rise structures. This
prevented the line from being electrified. The other rail projecs meant for Cochin Harbour Terminus like loco shed, coach maintainence shed etc got shifted to other locations. Many trains that started from Cochin Harbour Terminus got extended to other places. Also the location of the station also lead to less number of passengers visiting the station. The old Tea Garden Express(now Ernakulam-Nagore[16865/16866])was the last express that started operating from outside the Cochin Harbour Terminus station since 2002.The Ernakulam Junction(ERS) and Ernakulam Town(ERN) the two main railway station in Kochi is facing severe problem of space and capacity these days.In this context there is widespread demand to renovate Cochin Harbour Terminus and resume passenger services. The new Venduruthy rail bridge that is nearing completion has given new hopes for this station. The ample space at Cochin Harbour Terminus will surely clear the bottlenecks of space related to rail projects in Kochi.Even a MEMU maintainence shed along with an automatic coach washing plant could be setup in Cochin Harbour Terminus. The yard at Cochin Harbour Terminus is not long enough to accomodate new generation trains. It needs to be extended along with the platform. The old platform 3 and 4 need to renovated too.Now a reservation counter is operated from Cochin Harbour Terminus.Shifting the operations of passenger trains that start from Ernakulam junction to Cochin Harbour Terminus will help to increase the capacity of the railway line passing through the city.Cochin Harbour Terminus provides easy rail access to West Kochi. The Cochin Harbour Terminus could be the base for the Suburban rail service from Kochi as suggested by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).The Cochin Harbour Terminus station has the added advantage of being very close to the bus terminal and ferry terminal. The specifications put forward by navy on the height of the structures could pose as the major hurdle in the process.

As per page 55 of the Alphabetical List of Indian Railway Stations, there is no station with code CHTX. Only CHTS is there for Cochin Harbour Terminus.

Goyal Saheb,
CHTX is still there on train enquiry as per the blogger. CHTS is also there.
BUT THESE STATIONS HAVE BEEN CLOSED. Only ERS/ERN are available for trains .. ERS/ERN are the twin cities of Cochin (Kochi as it is now know), just NDLS and DLI sir ;)
Good wishes.

It is a gimmick by our Kerala ministers at centre. It is a colossal waste to extend the Intercity to Guruvayur.Just think ,do you expect passenger on a train to Guruvayur at midnight.Or atleast till Thrissur with so many faster long distance trains on the route. It is an attempt to woo the electoral population and not for the good of the state or nation.

It is not about ERS or TVC or South or North. It is all about railways efficiency. The railways should focus on occupancy of the trains. There is no meaning in starting a couple of trains that traverse the entire state of Kerala.

If there is a need for a direct train between Kottayam line and Guruvayur, diverting the Guruvayur-Chennai Egmore(6128\6127) via Kottayam would be a feasible solution.Since the Trivandrum intercity is via Alappuzha ,the divertion can help solve the issue.

Yes one is Perumanoor and other Mattancheri Halt. But Perumanoor is long closed down.mattancheri Halt is still present. But due to problems with the Venduruthy bridge enroute no trains operate from Cochin harbour terminus, though there has been widespread demand for it.
