Jan 12 2017 (11:16)   LHB coaches for Chennai Mail from next week

Entry# 2124372   News Entry# 291054         Tags   Past Edits
As part of the initiative to offer enhanced safety and travelling comfort to the passengers, the Railways is to introduce Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches in the 12624/12623 Thiruvananthapuram Central-Chennai Central-Thiruvananthapuram Central Superfast Expreses from next week.
The rake with LHB coaches will start plying from Chennai Central to Thiruvananthapuram Central on January 18 and from Thiruvananthapuram Central to Chennai Central on January 19, a senior railway official told The Hindu here on Wednesday.
Threes rakes have been made available for the Southern Railway to switch over the LHB coaches for the prestigous
Chennai Mail operating in the highly-demanding Thiruvananthapuram-Chennai sector.
At present, the Rajadhani Expresses operating in the New Delhi-Thiruvananthapuram Central-New Delhi, the Kochuveli-Indore-Kochuveli Weekly Expresses and the Ernakulam-Hatia-Ernakulam Superfast Express and back are operating with LHB coaches.
The introduction of LHB coaches is part of the decision to introduce them in mail and express trains in a phased manner. LHB coaches based on German technology were initially confined to RajdhaniExpress, Shatabdi Express and Duronto trains.
The raiwlays has decided to replace all old coaches of mail and express trains by LHB coaches by the end of 2019-2020. Compared to the ₹ 1.5 crore needed to manufacture a conventional coach, a LHB coach will cost the railways around ₹ 2.5 crore.
Developed by Linke-Hofmann-Busch of Germany (renamed Alstom LHB GmbH in 1998 after the takeover by Alstom) and produced by Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, the coaches are designed for an operating speed up to 160 km per hour. The length of 23.54 m and a width of 3.24 m means a higher passenger capacity, compared to conventional rakes.
They are considered to be “anti-telescopic” (they do not get turned over or flip in case of a collision). The coaches are made of stainless steel and interiors are made of aluminium to make them lighter. Advanced pneumatic disc brake system for efficient braking at higher speeds, modular interiors, improved suspension system and modern air conditioning system are the sailent features of the LHB coaches.
Only secondary check of the LHB coaches comprising of safety check and cleaning will be taking place in Kerala, the official said, adding primary maintenance of the coaches will be carried out in Delhi.

What will happen to the existing ICF rake then? They can plan to start a new train CAPE-VSG express with it. or they can start CAPE-HWH via TVC, ERS, CBE, RU, VSKP. What do you say?

This trip report is also available with a better picture layout at : click here
It was a day or two prior to our Independence day, Aug 15 and I was busy thinking about how the social media would come alive with patriotic messages masking the true feelings of indifference from the keyboard warriors. I had a client presentation with a PSU and was busy promising the moon on a cloudy new moon evening. My phone was on silent and set to vibrate to avoid any disturbance during my smooth and typical
technical salesman talk. A few minutes into the first break, sensing the break, the phone popped out the name PK and with no time for pleasantries the conversation went like this.
Me : What ?
PK : Dai, lets make a Gatimaan trip this month or first week of September. Preferably in Sep as I cannot get leaves this month.
Me : Machan, I am travelling to Udupi this weekend and another one close on its heels might be an issue.
PK : Fine. Check if possible and let me know.
Me : Ok, will call later.
Well now my smooth talk presentation is done for good, both literally and mentally. My mind was poisoned by this caller and now it is my turn to become a keyboard warrior and the next session of my presentation went in route analysis and optimization for the travel, if at all it would materialize. Incidentally, my part of the presentation was over and I have confused my clients well enough to stay out for the next couple of hours. Line clear. A good omen ? Maybe ?
The plan was quick and an attractive late night red eye flight to Delhi from Bangalore in the wee hours just past midnight on the last Saturday of Aug 2016 nailed the plan. Red eye to Delhi on 27 Aug morning. Metro to New Delhi. Freshen up at the IRCTC lounge. Cab to Nizamuddin. Train spotting and selfies with Gatimaan. High speed ride to Agra. Back to Nizamuddin somehow. Duronto to Chennai and the ever reliable Bangalore mail on 28 Aug from Chennai back home early 29 morning and get back to work as if nothing happened. Great plan with some fast and furious rides on some of the best trains of Indian Railways. That leaves me now with the task of convincing PK to push for an extra day of leave and work out the details at home. I guess my enthusiasm rubbed into everyone and the line was now all clear except that quite a lot of our such adhoc plans have a great tendency to slip between the cup and the lip. Tickets booked. Fingers crossed. Waiting now.
Two days prior to our travel, being a sincere and senior employee that he is, PK decided to make his presence felt at work and planned a half day visit to his workplace, but thankfully confirmed that the trip is on. Now I go drum beating all around about my impending half impromptu rides to the rest of my fraternity and eagerly await the beginning of the impending weekend.
Part 1 : Flight to the Capital
26-Aug-2017 1830 hrs. Bangalore traffic is not bad. It is extremely unpredictable and Mr.Murphy always has the last laugh. Looking back maybe he had the first one too. Well, moving on, I was supposed to be picked up en-route either in a cab or an airport bus around 2030 hrs and hoping Murphy does not strike again, present ourselves at the airport around 2200 to have enough time to eat, drink, unwind and prepare for an uncomfortable two and a half hour flight to Delhi. Thankfully, the flight was not delayed and an SMS dutifully confirmed that our flight was on schedule. I reach my pickup spot around 1930, an hour before planned. Being a Friday night, there were enough intercity buses and watching them haggle with the passengers kept me entertained for a while until impatience started kicking in. A minute seemed like a couple as I called up PK around 2030 to check his whereabouts. Surprise, or rather no surprise. He was still stuck at work and waiting for a colleague of his who had promised him to drop him off somewhere between me and the Airport. Unlike a few moments ago, time reversed its velocity and 5 minutes pass by in a minute. Finally close to 2115, I was picked up, introduced, pleasantries exchanged and decided to get off the moment we spot a radio cab less than 5 minutes away. Soon enough, we thank his colleague and find ourselves in a cab instructing the chauffeur to display his best F1 skills. Thankfully, with the traffic not heavy, we reach the airport with a good 2 hours to spare for our flight. Carrying just a hand baggage, we were in the boarding area and ordered a couple of drinks and food. A couple more of our friends and hunger strike would have saved us enough to buy off that chain store outside the terminal. Anyway, the flight fare was cheaper and we settled for that. The flight was uneventful, cramped, on time, bounced twice on landing and let us off at a ghost terminal at Delhi.
Save a pat for your back if you are to land at the domestic terminal in Delhi. There are no facilities for passengers landing during the wee hours like the 3AM bouncy landing we achieved. All airlines customer support desks and other outlets closed except for a couple of coffee joints, the cheapest of the coffee priced enough to feed a family of two for a day. Without wasting any time, we went over to the luggage carousel, dragged a few luggage trolleys and positioned ourselves for a convoluted new yoga position to rest for an hour before boarding a shuttle to the Aerocity metro station.
Morning 0420 hrs 27-Aug-2016. We await the shuttle to take us to Aerocity metro station outside the terminal building. The airport now no longer looks like an airport. The shuttle came in around 0430 hrs. The first half of the shuttle was filled with passengers. The second half was filled with luggage and for the next 10 minutes the first half kept pulling out the second half. We decided to help the first half in help achieving their objective purely from a selfish standpoint. The site and stench of the luggage was unbearable. 0445 hrs, we were rolling towards Aerocity station and find ourselves dumped in some abandoned location. Apparently, it was indeed the Aerocity station as I managed to identify the Metro logo in the glistening moonlight. We thanked the conductor for relieving us of the misery called Delhi Domestic Arrivals and quickly positioned ourselves in a queue waiting to get the tickets to board the metro. A metro worker is setting up the ticket vending machine. Impatience in the queue. The first metro towards New Delhi is due in 10 minutes and the next one is a good 20 minutes later. Just as we were about to explode, the metro worker with a weird queer look said, “Bhai, what are you waiting here for ?” . Now that we know he was not willing to take a selfie with us, we inquired about “tickets” and were guided elsewhere. Phew !!! 10 minutes later we were off towards New Delhi Railway Station after escaping from a suffocating and overheated nightmare of a place called “Aerocity Metro Station”. The metro crawled all the way taking almost 25 minutes instead of the advertised 15 mins to reach the station.
The plan was to freshen up at the IRCTC executive lounge and take either a cab or a local to Nizamuddin Railway Station. Our previous experience with the IRCTC lounge was terrific. Things have changed now. It is terrible. I don’t want to spoil the experience and hence just a conclusion. Get into the IRCTC lounge if you have some cash to waste. The station waiting room would provide you with the same facilities at probably a percent of the cost. I am getting a lot of bad vibes now. From the moment we landed in Delhi, things have not been going great.
Part 2 : The Ride
Pathetic airport, forgettable executive lounge and lack of sleep made the decision for us. We took a cab to Nizamuddin and reached the station around 0645 hrs. SR King, Tamilnadu express had just departed and the information boards directed us towards PF No 5 for the coveted Gatimaan ride. A light blue LHB rake with a leading P7 stationed on PF5 made us skip a beat as a P7 ride on Gatimaan would kindle all sorts of controversy and a heated debate on the rail fanning community. Unfortunately that was not going to be the case as the TAJ express bound for Jhansi was all set for its 0700 hrs departure from the Gatimaan Platform. Early morning activity at Nizamuddin was brisk with multiple arrivals and departures. Karnataka Sampark Kranti, Goa Sampark Kranti, Golden Temple mail, Thirukkural and a few other trains came and went not knowing what is in store for them. TAJ departed bang on time and soon enough Gatimaan graced PF No 5 brought in by a Ghaziabad WAP5 30020. Unlike any of the regular trains on Indian Railways, the loco and the entire rake was striped with reflectors for better night visibility.
Fares, set slightly higher than the Shatabdi’s, Gatimaan caters mainly to foreign tourists and last minute travelers. The regular chair car class was filled up while the executive chair car had an occupancy level just a notch above 50 percent. Apparently the train also caters as a new excursion activity for the kids. On the day we traveled, there were a group of around 70-90 kids accompanied by their teachers off for a high flying ride to Agra and probably will take the same train back as well. The excitement on their faces was contagious and I am sure they had one hell of a ride back and forth. We had decided to travel in style and had booked the executive chair car. It provided a spacious 2×2 seating arrangement with lots of legroom for unhindered movement and freedom. Executive chair car also provided us ample opportunities for playing musical chairs with close to half the coach being empty. Amazon ads adorned our headrests and the train hostesses were busy moving back and forth with their practiced smiles setting up for some express service. Post the customary clicks, selfies, train board snaps, coach exterior and interior snaps, setting up the phone charging, GPS, speedometers and other miscellaneous activities which had bloomed out of nowhere in the last decade, the LHB rake gifted us with is traditional jerk, albeit slightly softer and I set my watch to display 0810 hrs, while we leave behind a busy Nizamuddin station.
Right on dot at 0810 hrs as we leave Nizamuddin, an immediate crossing with none other than the King Mumbai Rajdhani reset the bad vibes and set the tone for the rest of the trip. The acceleration was brisk and we were cruising along at Okhla at a sedate 120kmph. Breakfast started off with branded Muesli & Milk soon followed with some Guava juice, Paratha, 2 slices of brown bread, a decent helping of fruit and vegetable salad. By now we are ready for the dessert, the 160kmph run, a piece of cake. The breakfast, going by IR standards was exceptional. With tea to indulge and a huge window to my right, it’s time to let go of all my accessories and enjoy the run. Asaoti vanished at 160kmph and there was no looking back now. Palwal, Rundhi, Sholaka, Ajhai and every other intermediate station was left behind at 160kmph. I would refrain from using any adjectives to describe the speed. You have to feel it. We slowed down a bit after Bhuteshwar and skipped Mathura around 50-60kmph around 9:20 AM. The impatient P5 was quick to accelerate and was back at 160kmph by the time we crossed Baad. Few TSR’s between Nizamuddin and Faridabad gave little time for Gatimaan to recover and we reached Agra’s dedicated Gatimaan Platform 5 minutes behind schedule. Karnataka Samaprk Kranti, Thirukkural, Goa Express, Taj Express and another 8-9 unknown express trains were looped mercilessly for scintillating overtakes. This was my first ride ever in a train where opening the doors on the run never crossed my mind. We set our foot down at 9:55 AM with nothing but broad smiles. The trip was also a reconnaissance for a good trainspotting location and Sholaka seemed perfect. The next time we have an encounter with the Gatimaan, it will be with our feet planted firmly on the ground near Sholaka. It is time to experience it from outside and that would be the next mission.
…to be continued…

So Diwali is round the corner and most of the trains are already booked from Bengaluru to interior Karnataka. It is these times which is very woeful for the general public specially for the people of Karnataka as they are made to pay heavily due to festival rush by the bus lobby. This lobby is so strong that SWR is paralyzed to prevent running of special trains to cater for festival rush. Kudos to SWR for acting against the interest of their own state for which it is formed. I am wondering what the SWR officials think about themselves by not being people friendly in most of the projects related to SWR region. Below are the key high lights of the intentional and mischieveous handling of projects by SWR so that it can be delayed infintely to favour the bus mafia and have huge personal gains in doing so. ...

1) MYS-SBC doubling and electrification will take another decade to complete fully though announced back long time.
2) HAS-NMGA new line construction will also take some more years to execute completely. Don't think of doubling and electrification in near future.
3) TK-Miraj electrification doubling. Bhool jjao ise. Yeh is janam mein nahin hoga.
4) SBC officials are making MYS as dumping ground for many long distance trains of SBC. Stupid officials are not thinking of MYA or Ramanagaram which can easily maintain 5 day and 5 night trains provided facilities are provided.
5) Check the availability of pit lines in the entire Karnataka state. Very pitiful.
6) And other doubling and new line projects are hanging beautifully in air.
7) Local train services are not started under the pressure of BMTC volvo buses.
Bus lobby bahut mahan hain Bengaluru mein. Aam aadmi lut raha hain is karan be it for any festivals. But Diwali is big big bonanza for all the bus operators in Bengaluru as it is India's biggest festival.
All the best and kudos for SWR for being so people friendly.

This may sound unpopular but is true.
Bangalore is basically a place for migrants. All trains from north India, TN, AP, Kerala is mainly run for them.
Let them run, I have
no issues with other state people coming here to earn their livelihood but.....
1. Shouldn't there be atleast 1 train for Hyderabad-Karnatak region ???? All dependent on inter-state trains with few allocated seats.
2. Shouldn't there be 1 train for coastal Karnataka? Just half a train for them.... The rest the Kerala lobby took with political pressure... even
though they have 16528.
3. As far as Mumbai-Karnatak region is concerned, again few itsy-bitsy trains from Guj, Raj, Mah and a lonely Hampi.
Migration is a reality, but if you try to shaft the native people in favour of migrants then anger builds up.....society collapses...everyone suffers...
This same thing happened to Bombay in 1960s now it will repeat in Bengaluru....

With little tweaks in TT, Mysuru can get a shadow train for Chamundi in both ways. The train I am talking about is ERS-SBC intercity. The TT can be as follows so that it takes off the load completely from Chamundi.
MYS-ERS Intercity
MYS: Dep 6.30 AM
SBC: Arr 9.15 AM 9.30 AM
Arr 6.30 PM
ERS-MYS Intercity
ERS: Dep 8.00 AM
SBC: Arr 5.00 PM Dep 5.15 PM
MYS: Arr 8 PM
The above can be done by shifting Chamundi to below timings:
MYS: Dep 7 AM
SBC Arr 9.45 AM
SBC: Dep 6.30 PM
MYS: Arr 9.15 PM
Extending the SBC-KIK to Hassan as HAS-KIK with below timings and diverting it via YPR.
HAS: Dep 5 AM
KIK: Arr 11.55 PM
KIK: Dep 4 AM
HAS: Arr 11.30 PM
What do you say with above suggestions. This will prevent SWR from asking of new rakes from RB and they can manage effectively with the availability of two rakes.
Shifting of maintenance of Tippu to Hassan this intercity can be extended to Hassan without the need to wait for the new line completion. Here is the abstract timings:
HAS: Dep 7 AM
MYS: Arr 8.45 AM Dep 9 AM
SBC: 11.30 AM Dep 11.45 AM
DWR: 10.30 PM

This is stupidity on their part. On one hand they cry they don't have enough revenue and on the other hand refuse to take hold of opportunities. Somebody tell them running special trains in Karnataka region will bring way more profit than useless empty trains in Delhi Chandigarh.

Yes. True . With a pitline at Hassan, they can maintain any new ICE between SBC-Hassan too in future.
I always believed the Lalbagh and SBC-MAS ICE can be utilised upto MYS instead of rake sharing. Especially now with doubling and of course a little speeding up.

MYS 5:30
SBC 7:45
MAS 1:30
MAS 14:00
SBC 19:30
MYS 22:00

MYS 6:00
SBC 8:30
MAS 14:30
MAS 15:00
SBC 21:00
MYS 23:15

No not that.
I used it as an idiom.
I meant SR has become like SWR in terms of taking a long time to introduce new services on new lines giving some or
the other reason. Like SWR taking long time in finishing KTY-HPT.
On finished lines like Ginigera-Gangavathi, Rayadurgam-Kalyanadurgam : no introduction of services giving an assortment of excuses.

Don't worry even I am deadly against SWR for Karnataka. Unko SBC ke siva kuch nahin dikhta bhain. In andhe logon aur behre logon ko kya dikhaye aur kya sunae. Koi nahin sunne waala. Mujhe Mysore se Bidar jaane mein pura 1 din lag jaata tha both of them being in same state. Isse jyada main aur kya kahoon. agar GR division bana to use SCR ko dena chahiye. Agar SWRmein gaya to GR ka satyanash kardega SWR.

Yes true.
Been to Bidar many times. The Bidar- Gulbarga road is good. But the Gulbarga-Ballari road is horrible.
I read GoK is developing that Gulbarga-Ballari-Srirangapatna road as 4 lane. Read the ad recently in papers.
is very slow. Glacial speed!!!
But since elections are nearing some progress is bound to take place for Bidar:
By March these things will happen:
1. New pitline, stabling line at Bidar.
2. Bidar-SBC new train on new line.
3. 2-3 DEMUs on Bidar-Kalaburagi line. Maybe a passenger from GR to SC thru Bidar.
4. Keeping eyes on Karnataka - Punjab elections, and Bidar being a pilgrim site for sikhs, one sikh devotee I met at Bidar station said they may introdue a weekly from Punjab, probably Amritsar. This is unlikely, I said. But the sheer number of sikh pilgrims who travel between Nanded and Bidar may force them, he believed.

Oct 17 2016 (16:59)   CR mulls chord line to bypass Daund station

Rail Premi   27 news posts
Entry# 2027002   News Entry# 283276         Tags   Past Edits
Pune: The Central Railway (CR) plans to build a chord line on the Pune-Manmad route which will bypass Daund station and help speed up long distance trains travelling on this route.
Sources from the Pune railway division said that plans are underway to bypass Daund station in the future and schedule long distance trains directly through Pune-Manmad route.
At present, many long distance trains travelling from Pune to places like Delhi, Howrah, Chandigarh among others are plied through Daund and Manmad.
Pune, trains first travel up to Daund. From Daund, the trains have to change their direction to travel up to Manmad. For changing direction, the engine has to be attached to the train on the other side. The process of changing engines takes over 40 minutes of time which could be avoided,” said sources from the railway.
They added that at present, there are plans that instead of travelling to Daund and changing engines for travelling up to Manmad, a chord line can be constructed two to three kilometres before Daund station.
This will help bypass Daund station thus saving one to two hours, said the sources. Officials from the Pune railway division said that plans for having a chord line are already in place but it would take close to two to three years for the work to get completed.
President of Railway Pravasi Group Harsha Shah said that it will be a welcome move if in the future, Daund station can be bypassed and long distance trains can be routed directly on the Pune-Manmad route.
“Daund is a technical halt for all long distance trains and not a commercial halt. This halt is mainly for changing the engine. If this can be avoided, then, long distance trains will be able to save two hours which will be very beneficial,”
added Shah.

Finally a proposal is sent to RB for approval. 2-3 years may be they need to acquire land for it and start the actual construction of the line. Lets see whether it will be approved by RB first as there is strong lobby by officials and locals in Daund against it. Even though it is a technical halt people board here in the trains to travel to Pune and beyond.

-More trains-more halts-more revenue.
Entire railway administration is like a fiefdom. More employees, more trains under one's control and unwilling to let any progress go through. The hold of diesel lobby is the reason for such enormous diesel import bill.

No sir I don't think so. It will be a right step towards rationalization of railways service with optimum and proper usage of existing resources. It will surely increase the revenue of the railways by leaps and bounds.

Replacing the above said AC coaches with 3rd AC will increase the carrying capacity of the railways. The fare will be normal fare and not subsidized like Garib Rath. I will revise my statement of removal of special trains to converting it to only 3rd AC trains with 20 3 AC bogies and 2 EOG so that maximum people can travel. These type of trains can be given a single nomenclature and can run between capital cities as long distance or as intercity for short distance.
The advantage of above system is that ICF need not design different type of coaches and production capacity increase if we set rules for producing only 4 types of LHB coaches namely, 3rd AC, SL,
GS and EOG etc. I guess you would understand my point now. The sole aim is to bring in the efficiency in carrying capacity of the IR and take care of all the sectors of society equally.

Nahin sir. Thoda sa sochiye ki in badlav se sabka kitna fayda hoga. Bahut si changes thode atpate lagenge lekin long term ke liye faidemand rahenge apne desh ke liye. Railways ki amdani badhegi to sare projects ko funding milegi aur jahan tak ho sake railways ko kharcha kam karna hain aur revenue badhana hain. Main abhi freights ke rates badhane ke khilaf hoon kyunki woh already bahut jyada hain.
Main samajhta hoon aap thoda dhyan se is barein mein soche to aapko khud ba khud in points se aap agree karoge.

Sir meko kuch points se issue h
Ac1 and ac2 band karna and rajdhani band karna.
How can u think such thing.
Rajdhani ek prestigious train h jo kitne saalon se chali aarahi h aur aage bhi chalti rahengi, bhut se RM aaye aur gaye but Rajdhani ko koi nhi hila saka, Rajdhani Indian Railways ki shaan h.
AC2 ko kyu band karna chahate h sir aap, agar koi extra fares deke thoda luxury se jana chahata h to isme hume koi problem nhi hona chahaye.
Ac1 privacy maintain karta h.
Me khud ac2 prefer karta hu jab bhi travel karna ho.
Ac3 conjested hojata h peak season me.
Kuch points sahi h jaise flexi fares, humsafar tejas premium trains ko band karna.
But ac 2&3 and rajdhani nhi
