Accuses Chief Minister of not pursuing the matter with the Centre; good response to YSRC rally
YSR Congress MP Vijay Sai Reddy has said that he would raise the issue of new railway zone for Andhra Pradesh with Visakhapatnam as its headquarters in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
He participated in an awareness rally organised by the party on Beach Road on Sunday ahead of party district president Gudivada Amarnadh’s proposed ‘Atma Gaurava Yatra’ for the railway zone from March 30.

rally, which began at the statue of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, drew good response from morning walkers, academicians, and intellectuals.
Mr. Reddy said that the new railway zone for Andhra Pradesh was promised in the A.P. Reorganisation Act prior to bifurcation of the State. It was one of the main assurances that should have been granted within six months of bifurcation. “But no decision has been announced nearly three years after formation of the new government,” he said. Mr. Reddy said that the Chief Minister seemed to be content with making statements that a new railway zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters would become a reality. He was not exerting any pressure on the Centre for fulfilment of the assurance. He sought an early announcement on the zone as the future of the backward North Andhra region was dependent on it.
Mr. Amarnadh said that both the TDP and BJP cheated the people of North Andhra by promising the new railway zone with headquarters in Visakhapatnam before the elections and ignoring it later.
It became an election plank for the BJP-TDP during the recent election to the Graduates’ Constituency from North Andhra. He appealed to all political parties to extend their support to the ‘Atma Gaurava Yatra’.
Mr. Amarnadh met leaders of the CPI and the CPI(M) and sought their support. Leaders of the Left parties agreed to attend the ‘padayatra’.
Morning walkers, senior citizens, and the general public were explained the importance of the railway zone.

Members of the Rajasthani Association Tamil Nadu urged P.P. Chaudhary, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, to increase train services from Chennai to Jodhpur.
“Currently, there is only one weekly train — the Jodhpur Express — and it does not have pantry cars. Most people use the Navajeevan Express and go to Ahmedabad first, and then to Jodhpur, which is very inconvenient. We request that the Navajeevan Express be extended up to Jodhpur,” Kantilal D. AURANGABAD: Indian Railways is planning to save a staggering Rs 41,000 crore expenditure towards power consumption over the next decade by gradually switching to non-conventional energy. Railway minister Suresh Prabhu on Saturday announced the plan while addressing the e-inauguration of DigiPay initiative at the railway station here. He also announced various development projects at other stations in the South Central Railway from Hyderabad. "Plans have been charted out to install power generation capacity of 1MW by tapping solar and wind power over a period of the next five years. Efforts are on to tap non-conventional energy at various railway stations and headquarters," he said, adding that the Indian Railways would be installing roof-top and land-based solar power units at various facilities. Prabhu said both traction power network, an electricity grid for the supply of electrified rail networks and non-traction power network would be synced with the non-conventional energy.Recently, the South Central...

Railways installed a 100-KWp on-grid solar plant atop the roof of Rail Nilayam, the Secundarabad-based headquarters, in addition to a 3 KW solar/wind hybrid plant at Poodoor station. Among other green initiatives, the minister also announced restoration of water bodies in the form of dug-wells on railway properties. "Restoration of water bodies on railway premises is necessary to tide over possible water scarcity. Considering only around 4% fresh water is naturally available, these water bodies can be very handy. Emphasis is also on recycling of water," he said. "We have already planted nearly 1.5 crore saplings on the premises of various railway establishments and the target would be achieved in near future in phases by planting 1.2 crore saplings a year," he said.

Three students have come up with this bot to protect railway tracks
The Indian Railways has one of the largest railway networks in the world. Comprising more than 7,000 stations, with trains carrying more than eight billion passengers annually, it is the regular mode of transport for the common man. However, stretched over more than 66,000 kilometres, its maintenance takes a lot of effort. The Ministry of Railways has a tough time keeping things functioning smoothly.
Enter Kulandayan C., Lekaraj B. and Rakhesh M., students of S.A. Engineering College, Chennai, who have taken

it upon themselves to end Railway’s woes.
The talented trio have developed a robot that monitors railway tracks for cracks and other issues. “Several tracks of the Indian Railways are old and outdated. This results in speed restrictions and can also lead to accidents. We have developed a device which contains a microcontroller that detects cracks using a light sensing module (infrared sensors). Once the crack is detected, its location is sent to authorities of the nearest station via GSM. We have developed an Android application that receives this information as a message along with the location of the problem on Google Maps. Based on this, corrective action can be taken by the authorities,” explains Kulandayan.
Cleaning system
Inspired by the Prime Minister’s Clean India mission, the team has added an additional function to the robot — a brush to clean the tracks. Attached at the front, it will help clean up plastic covers, dust and nitrogenous waste, among other things. “Since our demo model is a miniature one, we have used a brush. The actual model will feature a vacuum pump at the front and Dettol spray at the back to keep railway tracks clean,” says Lekaraj.
The trio plan to take their project forward by making use of Zigbee or the Internet to enable the bot to detect cracks even from remote locations. “ZigBee devices can transmit data over long distances by passing it through a mesh network of intermediate devices to reach more distant ones,” elucidates Rakhesh.
The team has presented their bot at the Institute for Engineering Research and Publication (IFERP) and their paper was published on IFERP’s website. They have also applied for a copyright of their model and are seeking their college’s support for presenting it to the Railways.

Requested our IR /RB that Tamilnadu state also needs a separate Railway zone with the existing Chennai,Trichy,Salem and Madurai Railway division and with formation of New Tirunelveli/ Thoothukkudi Railway Division.
Both Telengana and Andhra Pradesh are having a separate Zone for their state developments.
So Tamilnadu needs a separate Railway Zone for the development of Railway Infrastructures for the benefits of Tamilnadu people.

Aiming to provide connectivity in remote areas, railways will set up Wi-Fi hotspot kiosks at about 500 stations and help people access an array of online services, including various government schemes.
Christened as Railwire Saathi, the Wi-Fi kiosks will function like a PCO for Digital India and enable people to use services like e-commerce, online banking, offer them access to open school/university and insurance schemes, e-ticketing for train and bus services among others.
Automated form filling, mobile and DTH recharge are other services which the Railwire Saathi is expected to provide in areas

with limited connectivity.
The Railwire Saathi aims to provide connectivity to the unconnected and at the same time offer jobs opportunities in rural areas, a senior railway ministry official said.
While railways is equipping about 400 stations with free Wi-Fi service in association with Google, this scheme has dual aim - providing jobs as well as connectivity.
He said the scheme is expected to be operational by May.
The Railwire Saathi is a Wi-Fi entrepreneurship model where unemployed youths, preferably women, can be trained and supported to set up a Wi-Fi hotspot and provide a platform to online services which will make the business sustainable, he said.

RailTel, the telecom arm of railways, would execute the scheme across the country.
Though there are various schemes for minorities, farmers, common man and many avenues for completing education, people in remote areas are generally not aware of them or find it difficult to access them, said the official.
Unemployed youth who wants to be RailWire Saathi would have to contact RailTel for necessary training.
The training course will be approved by National Skill Development Council (NSDC). After being trained by RailTel, the youth will get certificate which can be used to get loan under the Mudra scheme, he said.
Using the loan money, they will install and manage the Wi-Fi hotspots as per design provide by RailTel.
Railwire Saathi will help in disseminating information about various government schemes like Pradhan Mantri Ujjwal Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojna, Pradhan Mantri Atal Pension Yojna, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Beema Yojna and Pradhan Mantri Surakhya Beema Yojna among others.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today his ministry has drawn up a mission to save Rs 41,000 crore on electricity energy bills over the next ten years by betting big on solar energy, even as it expects to mop-up Rs 17,000 crore through non-fare revenue modes.
Addressing a gathering after commissioning various rail infra developmental works on South Central Railway (SCR) from Hi-Tech city railway station here, he said his Ministry has drawn up ‘Mission 41K’ to save Rs 41,000 crore on the expenditure on energy consumption over the next 10 years.
Prabhu said
...
after taking over as Railway minister he had stressed that expenses on energy should come down by 15 per cent and they are working on the same.
"So far we have been successful in saving over Rs 4,000 crore expenditure on power bills in Railways. One of the strategies is to go for solar power and generate 1000 MW of solar power in the next five years. In addition, we have already started production of 26 MW in wind energy. We are also working on converting waste to energy and commissioned two such projects," he explained.
"We will go for solar power all over India and out of this, 500 MW will be produced by installing solar panels on rooftops of railway buildings and another 500 MW through land based. So, traction power and non-traction power both will benefit from solar power and as well as reducing cost of energy and this will be a significant improvement in Railways," the Minister added.
Prabhu said he has already directed railway officials across the country to restore water bodies on railway lands as ground water is depleting. This will not only help in saving money for Railways but will also ensure proper supply of water and benefit everybody. Another campaign has been launched all over India to plant five crore saplings over the next five years and already 1.5 crore saplings have been planted involving state governments. '
He further said Railways must save costs and added, "You must reduce costs and increase revenue. We have also started working on other side of reducing costs and increasing revenue through non-fare revenue. Rs 17,000 crore of extra revenue, Railways will earn from non-fare revenue (model)."
He said the Ministry is making Rs 8.5 lakh crore investment by raising the amount. "That problem of Railways of having no money has been solved now and we have completely bankable projects available.

railways is hedging far too much on a non-dispatchable source like solar, they need to diversify towards wind and in NFR/NR regions towards run-of-river to have some significant benefits. Solar power output is quite fickle and depends on many parameters, and this is even without considering what havoc a single shorted/damaged cell can wreck on an entire panel.

AHMEDABAD: Here is an opportunity for budding planners in architectural schools from the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation (IRSDC). Its CEO, S K Lohia, who was at Cept university to deliver a lecture on station redevelopment and Metro rail, announced a competition for colleges and universities to design stations like Gwalior, Baiyappanahalli, Gandhinagar (Jaipur), Amritsar and Nagpur. "While one competition will be held for educational institutions, the other will be for private firms. The best out of these will be chosen. In fact we are looking for good concepts," says Lohia.

"The Rs 245 crore Gandhinagar project could not invite global firms because of the project size. The state government is investing 74% in its construction while 26% will be borne by IRSDC," said Lohia. "Construction is going on at the site," he said.
In case of Surat, Lohia said that Request for Quotations (RFQ) were invited on March 3 and nine firms have approached IRSDC. "The next stage will be on April 15, when we will be declaring the RFP for the DPR preparation and set the ball rolling," Lohia said.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visits her at hospital, promises swift action against culprits
A rape and acid attack survivor of the Dalit community was forced to drink acid while she was travelling on a train to Lucknow on Thursday. The police on Friday arrested two men in connection with the incident. The woman was admitted to the trauma centre of the King George’s Medical College.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited her and promised swift action against the culprits. “Necessary action will be taken soon,” he tweeted soon after his visit. He also directed

the police to provide security to the victim, while announcing ₹1 lakh assistance to her.
In 2009, Bhondhu Singh and Guddu allegedly gang-raped her over a property dispute at her home at Unchahar in Rae Bareli and on December 25, 2013 attacked her with acid.
On March 10, she had gone home to Rae Bareli to see her daughter, who is appearing for Board examinations. On Thursday morning, when she was returning to Lucknow by the Ganga-Gomti Express, the two persons attacked her and forced her to drink acid at the Mohanlalganj railway station, police said.
Colleagues of the victim, who works at a cafe here, alleged that she was forced to drink acid by the accused so that she would not be able to raise her voice against them.
A case was registered against the two persons at the Government Railway Police (GRP) station Charbagh under Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons) and 3(2)5 of the SC/ST Act.
Selfies invite flak
Four RPF (Railway Protection Force) jawans were suspended for negligence in duty. The police has also ordered action against three women constables after they clicked selfies with the victim by her hospital bed. The pictures were widely circulated on social media.
A. Satish Ganesh, Inspector General Police (IGP)-Lucknow Zone, termed the three constables “insensitive” and directed the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) and the Senior Superintendent Police (SSP), Lucknow, to take action.
Police ignored plea
The victim’s colleagues alleged negligence on the part of the police, saying the woman had sought police protection in the past due to threats received by her but officials did not pay heed to it.
According to NGO Stop Acid Attacks, the victim was attacked in 2009 by the accused after she filed a complaint soon after the rape, and on December 25, 2013, they made the acid attack on her. She also received a fresh threat letter on January 18, after which the police and administration assured help and security.
