May 25 2017 (16:11)   TEJAS EXPRESS: DAY ONE, SEVERAL HEADPHONES STOLEN

Hareesh Mangalam*^~   1182 news posts
Entry# 2292683   News Entry# 303575         Tags   Past Edits
The Mumbai-Goa Tejas Superfast Express' maiden run on Monday has left Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu understandably chuffed. What Prabhu probably doesn't know, and what has left the railway officials visibly sheepish, is the railway staff reporting that several headphones were stolen from the train during its very first journey. The impact of the thefts is such that on Wednesday - during the train's journey from Goa to Mumbai - a few passengers complained that they were not provided headphones at all.
Tejas, hailed as an "aeroplane moving on the ground" by the Central railway top brass, boasts of amenities such as LED screens attached to seats, Wi-Fi, CCTV cameras, and tea/coffee vending machine. Capable of running at 200 kmph, the train covers

the 552-km Mumbai-Goa journey within nine hours.
A senior railway official told Mumbai Mirror that "at least a dozen headphones" were missing from the train after Monday's journey. He also said a couple of LED screens had scratch marks on them.
"The headphones were distributed just after the journey commenced. There wasn't an announcement to return the headphones because we expected passengers to not carry them away, just like they don't take away pillows and blankets," the official said.
When asked the cost of a single headphone on board Tejas, the official merely said, "Not very expensive". The cheapest ticket on the 992-seat train costs Rs 1,185 (chair car, without food), and the most expensive is the executive class ticket at Rs 2,740.
The Central Railway's chief public relations officer, Narendra Patil, confirmed the railway staff reported that "a few headphones" were missing from the train after Monday's journey.
Yesterday, a senior citizen on board the train's journey to Mumbai said he was not given headphones "despite several reminders". Mahendra Barde, 62, who was travelling with wife, said, "I wanted to watch something on the screen but never got the headphones." Several passengers also complained that the Wi-Fi on the train wasn't active.
The railway officials said not much should be looked into these incidents. "These are teething troubles that will be sorted out within a few days. We need to celebrate a train that will eventually change the way India travels," the official said.

Its an absolute shame. I think we Indians dont deserve such facilities. Unless the attitude of people change, railways should not come up with such new features.
They should have taken some input after a similar incident happened in Mahamana Express.

May 03 2017 (10:06)   Finally, a Mysuru-B'luru train to suit the working class

The 12-year-old demand at last came true and the service is expected to start from May 13
A 12-year dream of employees in the garment & manufacturing industries and unorganised sector workers for an express train between Bengaluru and Mysuru will be a reality later this month. The new train is likely to be inaugurated on May 13.
The dream comes true through a shadow path train of Chamundi Express which will connect Hubbali and Mysuru via Tumakuru and Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) Bengaluru City Station.
The
...
train has been conceived to provide more luxury to the workers with 18+2 stateof-the-art, swanky coaches, and called Deen Dayalu coaches, specially meant for general class compartments. The up and down trains will run between Hubbali and Mysuru South (Ashokapuram Railway Station) and are expected halt for 15 minutes at Mysuru Railway station for passengers.
The train that starts from Hubbali reaches Krantiveera Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) Bengaluru City Station via Tumakuru route at 5.45 pm, which later leaves for Mysuru at 5.50 pm, reaching there at 8.40 pm. The Mysuru-Hubbali train will leave Mysuru at 6 am, KSR Bengaluru Station at 8.45 am and leave for Hubbali at 8.50 am. The schedule of the train will ease the working passengers to commute conveniently to reach their workplaces in Bengaluru on time. The allotment of project was pending before the ministry for the last 12 years and was approved by the railway board only last year. Prathap Simha, member of Parliament of Mysuru-Kodagu constituency on Monday had taken to Twitter demanding that railway minister Suresh Prabhu look into the issue. Addressing his tweet to Prabhu, Simha said: “Sir, u responded 2 Odisha CM in 3 mins. But my proposal was approved by railway board in last july, still waiting 4 d rakes! Alas!“ Simha told Bangalore Mirror, “I have already received a positive response from the minister (railways minister Suresh Prabhu). The trains will run between these two cities within this month. But I am trying to inaugurate it before May 13. If everything goes as per plan, the passengers may commute before the first half of this month.“
Railway activist Sanjeev Dharmannavar told this paper, “This train is going to help reduce traffic especially between Bidadi and Tumakuru for those labourers working in unorganised sector. During the morning hours, there were no trains other than Intercity and Janshathabdi. So this will help the public.“
Speaking about the significance of the train schedule, he said, “Especially, the train timings are made sensibly. There were already two trains from Bengaluru running towards Mysuru at 6.15 pm and 6.45 pm, which were always overcrowded. But now people have the choice at 5.50 pm which will help them to commute and it will eventually reduce the congestion in trains.“

Instead of starting this from Hubballi, they would have started it from Hosapete/Ballari, at-least these cities would have got daily ICE connection to Bluru and Mysuru.

The railways as a whole reversed a two-year trend by registering an increase of 70 million passengers in 2016-17, but Southern Railway has bucked it, carrying 1.5 million passengers less than in the previous year. This is despite an increase of 3.5 million passengers on Chennai's suburban network, which also reversed a two-year trend.
This free-fall, statistics from the zone as well as railway pub lications show, has continued over the last four years. From a high of 873 million in 2012-13, the zone lost 75 million passengers in the period, registering just 798 million in 2016-17.
The

decrease is alarming as passengers who have moved away to other modes of transport don't return, say experts.Southern Railway , unlike zones in the central and eastern regions, mainly depends on passengers for revenue, they add, calling for urgent steps to the drop. This is particularly true in a state like TN with a very welldeveloped network of highways and bus operators. An official release from SR, which extends to TN and Kerala, said earnings from passenger trains in 2016-17 had increased by 4%. However, the complete picture, taking into account the freight earnings, might not be as rosy as loading had also gone down.

The high court on Monday ordered notice to the state government, the Railways and the railway development board in response to a PIL seeking an exclusive Bengaluru-Karwar overnight train via the recently commissioned Kunigal line.
A division bench headed by Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee also ordered notice to the commissioner for Railway Safety and Konkan Railway Corporation and others on a petition filed by Sanjay Revanka from Karwar taluk.
Raveendra G Kolle, counsel for the petitioner, highlighted railway minister Suresh Prabhu's tweet on March 21 about reducing travel time by four hours
...
and said the authorities did not consider the same when the petitioner submitted a representation in terms of the court's earlier directive. For reasons unknown, Karwar Express and Kannur Express were merged in to one combined train, he said and added that the delay in introducing the train will benefit private bus operators.
If Karwar Express is run via Kunigal line through Kankanadi KRCL Junction, without entering Mangaluru city , it will not only save more than four hours, but also benefit a large number of long distance commuters. Otherwise, passengers have to first enter Mangaluru City station from Kankanadi KRCL Junction and again come back to Kankanadi Junction, he pointed out.
