The Bengaluru–Hassan new railway line, construction of which was completed in January, would be opened for passenger traffic likely on March 26.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu and the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda are expected to inaugurate the new line by flagging off Yeshwantpur–Hassan Inter-City Express from Yeshwantpur station.
South Western Railway’s chief public relations officer E. Vijaya said the inauguration date has been tentatively fixed.
166-km new line was sanctioned by Mr. Gowda when he was the Prime Minister in 1996–97. The project took over two decades for completion.
Commissioner of Railway Safety (Southern Circle) A.K. Manoharan, who inspected the new line between Nelamangala and Shravanabelagola (110 km) between February 6 and 10 issued authorisation to SWR on February 20 to run passenger trains on the sector.

Reasons given by PGT division are absolute rubbish. If they cant find a slot for Kudla then they dont deserve to keep hold of MAQ and can hand it over to SWR. Demand between MAQ and SBC is very high that Karwar-SBC runs packed from MAQ- one can witness the huge rush for UR seats at MAQ Platform. Some might say that demand for another train is not there but if thats the case why there are 100s of buses between MAQ and SBC? If more trains are introduced, then a lot of bus pax are going to migrate to train travel.

Island express belong to SWR. It is running 200 km in SWR & balance 715 kms in SR. So, SWR can tell SR to run this train and divert SBC cape exp via MAQ, SRR, ERN. Distance will increase by 130 kms but SR canl not raise any objections as the train will run 700 km in SR. Also, no parking problem at MAQ. SWR will be happy to do so, as they are serving more in neighbouring zone. MAQ SBC travellers get a train. New connectivity.
Win win win for all - SWR, SR, public.!!!

I feel MDU, TEN and NCJ depots are doing a better job compared to MS/MAS. At large I have always found trains with PM at these 3 depots clean.

CHENNAI: Southern Railway, whose finances are precarious due to dwindling freight loadings, is also incurring huge losses due to ineffective use of locomotives, say insiders. Despite little increase in the number of train services and a decrease in goods traffic, the number of locomotives used has increased. Statistics accessed from insiders show there are more diesel and electric locomotives than required. This is a major contributor to the operating ratio a measure of performance worsening, going from 134.9 to 143.2, in the last two years, say sources. Statistics show an average of just 80 electric and 60 diesel locomotives are used daily for freight in the zone which has earmarked 170 electric and 110 diesel locomotives for freight. The zone, which has a total of 310 diesel locos, has an excess of around 50 AC locos for passenger operations. Diesel locos continue to be added despite all major routes being completely...
electrified. This has translated into spending more on staff for the excess locos and the average running time of locos being less than 10 hours a day. The Railway Board benchmark is 14-16 hours a day. Given that a freight locomotive can earn Rs 1.2 lakh an hour, a back-of-the-envelope calculation shows crores of rupees are lost every month due to inefficient loco-usage. This comes when the zone's freight earnings are decreasing, leading to an increase in operating ratio money spent to earn every Rs 100. Freight earnings have dropped from Rs 3,045 crore in FY15 to Rs 2,816 crore in FY16 to Rs 2,682 crore in FY17. In a recent Railway Board review, the zone scored only 40% on diesel loco utilisation and less than 60% on diesel loco failures. It ranked second worst overall based on operational parameters. The zone is also resisting a review which could bring down loco-holding, sources said. Senior officials are wary of sending these locos to other zones as many are used to hide other failures that can result in train delays. Excess locos can be seen idling at various stations across Tamil Nadu and Kerala, sources say. A number of goods wagons are also unused. The SR spokesperson denied there were excess locos. "Locos keep moving between railways during train operations. Board reviews loco holdings on a daily basis," he said. A senior operations official, requesting anonymity, said this was a temporary issue due to decrease in freight loading and no major increase in passenger traffic. "Once the demand picks up, loco-holding will not seem like an in-efficiency."

Slightly misleading report. Its possible the goods locos are underused but certainly not WAP4s and WAP7s. ED P4s are massively used at ERS, TVC, SRR, MDU,TPJ, TN,NCJ,CBE, ED, MAS,MS,SBC,YPR. And of course numerous supply of ED and RPM locos to SWR and SCR trains. SWR simply blames lack of locos whereas the reality is they can't get the substations ready soon to let more trains use eloco.

Yes on MYS route still substations are not ready.
The Someshwara substation on YNK-GTL route is ready I think. So only Prashanti and Prashanti Nilayam got E-Locos (apart from loco reversal at GTL factored in). But still KK, Udyan etc... haven't got due to shortage, I guess.
SWR simply needs an ELS (as discussed in /blog/post/2173216) or atleast KJM DLS needs to be converted for holding E-Locos too.
Other zones like SCR, SR will first see to that their trains get E-Locos and then give surplus to SWR.
Ex: GTL-HUP passenger gets an E-Loco on the same route where other Exp/SF trains don't. I am not against that train getting an E-Loco, but just pointing out that SCR first uses available locos for their trains and then sends surplus (or if told by RB) to SWR.
P.S.: Some locos of SR (AJJ ex-ED) and SCR (BZA ex-LGD) that come to SWR look like they have seen better days :)

My expectations from 12657 over the last 1 year have been very limited thanks to the presence of various TSRs in MAS-SBC sector and this Sunday was no different. It was not really a planned journey as we (read my better half and I) had to make a sudden trip to Chennai for a personal work and return back in a day. Like always, I had booked the onward journey in 12658 for Saturday night and in a rare occasion booked in 3AC in the Tatkal quota for Sunday night journey. I usually prefer SL for both 12658 and 12657 and this was one of the rarest of cases where I had to book in 3A.
MRTS trains are usually deserted on
Sunday nights and this time around, we preferred to take the MRTS route from MTMY to MAS instead of the usual bus route but the train was crowded unusually. We managed to reach MAS at 22:40 thanks to the numerous TSRs from MTMY to Park Town. The number of TSRs in MAS division is at an all-time high and even the MRTS route is also not spared from them. Like on most nights, 12657 was allotted PF5 and as we entered the Platform, Yercaud’s last coach was seen exiting PF6. I was visible upset seeing a WAP4 hauling my previous night’s journey in 12658 and my wife did not want to see the same upset face this night as well. We quickly checked out the loco and my eyes lit up seeing the white stallion 30358 from the Royapuram Loco Shed. Kovai had just arrived on the adjacent platform with marginal delay with another WAP7 while 30426 WAP7 was roaming light on PF3 after hauling Brindavan. Howrah Mail was on Pf8 with yet another P7-30420 so literally it was P7 mania during that hour at MAS as even the just arrived Korba-TVC exp was hauled by a WAP7.
B2 coach was super clean thanks to the supreme maintenance standards set by SBC division and we quickly settled into our SLB and SUB berths 5 minutes before departure. Since 12657 undergoes Platform attention instead of Sec. Maintenance, as soon as the rake is shunted to Platform, Watering + Toilet cleaning is done and same had taken place this time as well. Since I literally take 12657/58, for all my MAS-SBC journeys, I sort of knew most of the LPs by face and moment I saw this particular LP I was confident we’ll have a fairly decent run this time despite the numerous TSRs.
We were given starter at 23:12 itself and departed bang on time. After the TSR at Korattur, Avadi was said good-bye by 23:40 and I was confident enough, we’ll arrive AJJ with only around 15 mins delay. It was a pleasant sight to witness TRL dispatched at MPS of 100+ as we were allotted the fast line post TRL although we had to move to the slow line post TO. Moment we crossed TRL at 23:55, I was sure Yercaud will have to wait for us longer at Walajah for the overtake instead of the usual Valathoor looping.
As expected Yercaud was overtook at Walajah and P7 showed no mercy and breaks were applied only at KPD outer after AJJ. HTE-BNC and late running Kerala had exited KPD only 10-20 mins back and I was sure HTE – BNC will block us the path after BWT.
In one of the best runs in the last 1 year, my Mail arrived JTJ 5 minutes BT and even better BWT 5 minutes BT. This is a record run simply because of the fact that, this train had a simply outstanding history of arriving BT at most stations en-route and the umpteen number of TSRs over the last 1 year or so had completely spoiled so many trains’ performance. By the time we reached BWT, we had almost caught up with HTE – BNC as the gap was hardly 20kms. This had affected the performance in the home run as we were given last minute clearance both at KJM and BYPL and had stopped at BNCE home for 2 minutes. By the time, we entered BNC platform, huge number of crowd were seen exiting HTE – BNC on PF1A indicating we had almost caught up with the SER based train although the gap was quite big at KPD.
Thanks to the Uber and Ola strike, we struggled to get a cab at BNC and finally managed to get hold of a cab to reach home. It was a proud moment for me to witness the fantastic run between MAS and KJM considering the numerous disappointments in the last twelve months.

PS: I am usually very critical of SBC division for its operational mismanagement and corruption but can happily take my hats off for their maintenance of trains. You give them an untidy rake and they will return it to you back in few hours spick and span.

You know what the best part of this report is? Every single line penned comes out of a long history of your association with 2657/58. Someone who doesn't know the most intricate details of this train, someone who doesn't love this train above all, someone who isn't a true railfan to begin with CANNOT write this report. Before someone calls himself the biggest fan of XYZ train, he should, IMO, judge if his relationship with XYZ is even comparable to what Raghu has with 2657/58. If it is, he may go ahead.

Today I am taking 7 Mail. Its my second trip in 12657 in 2017. Hoping for a wonderful run with BT arrivals.

the number of the diverted service will be 22691/22692 instead of 22693/22694.
Accordingly, Train No. 22691 (new number) KSR Bengaluru-H.Nizamuddin Rajdhani Tri-Weekly Express will depart KSR Bengaluru at 20:00 hrs, arrive/depart Satya Sai Prashanti Nilayam at 22:38/22:40 hrs, Dharmavaram at 23:20/23:22 hrs, Anantapur at 23:53/23:55 hrs, Guntakal at 01:05/01:10 hrs, Raichur at 02:43/02:45 hrs, Seram at 04:44/04:45 hrs, Secunderabad at 07:35/07:50 hrs and arrive H.Nizamuddin at 05:55 hrs on the second day.

This might have been done due to operational reasons. 22691/2 will soon get WAP7 end-end once GTL-WADI is electrified (expected by June). Also could be speeded up in TAAG. Speedup/eloco both not possible for 22693/94 till end of 2018. Slot will have to change and moreover its anyway non stop between DMM and SC. So moving 22693 also 22691's route for better occupancy and operational reaaons.

Although food is part of the fare of all Rajdhanis and Shatabdis, one can still order via e-catering website or Travelkhana. I have seen passengers declining to have the Rajdhani food and getting from outside.

I was hoping SWR will at least think of building their own ELS once SBC-MYS section comes under wires completely but that is not going to happen anytime soon it seems. Now that IR has allowed DLS to hold e-locos and vice-versa, hoping KJM shed is modified to accommodate e-locos also.

The length of electrified sections in SWR is still very less to justify a full-fledged ELS. Most of the trains in the SBC-MYS sector are either ICEs that can be handled by any of the locos in SBC trip shed, or trains that will crossover into other zones after SBC and get their loco links from other zones.
In addition, a new ELS is slated to come up at GTL as well. Until the interior SWR regions start getting electrified, SR and SCR will's fleet will be sufficient to cater to SWR's requirements.

GTL shed is mainly to cater to SCR region and once WADI line becomes electrified fully. SWR needs its own shed to cater to trains in MYS-SBC-YPR-DMM sector. Once SBC-MYS is electrified fully, you need a minimum of 5 to 10 e-locos to cater to SBC-MYS trains itself leave alone the rest. and then come the long distance trains from SBC/MYS/YPR going towards WADI/GNT/BZA via DMM and also SBC-BWT sector. SR will soon run out of locos to lend to SWR as some of the SR lines are also being electrified at a fast pace.

Hardly. GTL will cater to the MAS-CSTM line and also cater to trains heading towards SBC from GR/GNT side. Sheds like GTL, ET, AJJ, ED etc are designed to cater to a wide selection of routes as these stations by themselves do not have much originating traffic and mostly have passing trains. It won;t be surprising if GTL WAP's are seen hanging around SBC in the future.
Again, I am just saying that an ELS is probably not a requirement with only the MYS-SBC route to cater to. Most trains from BWT side get loco links from farther up in their routes like VSKP or ET, or SR links for those originating/passing from MAS. On the GTL
side, trains via DHNE, or trains going to DD side will be catered by GTL.
Once SWR see's an expansion in electrification, then an ELS becomes an immediate necessity. For the present, expanding the Trip-shed capacity or making provision at KJM for a handful of locos ( as you pointed out) should be sufficient.
