Malda, August 1, 2011
The Malda train mishap was apparently caused by sudden soil erosion, railway sources told Headlines Today on Monday.

Sources in railway confirmed the Headlines Today's finding, according to which sinking of track was the real reason of the accident. The accident took place on Sunday evening due to the derailment of Guwahati-Bengaluru Express, followed by ramming of

another train -- Azimganj-Malda Town Passenger -- into it.

According to initial observations, sudden sinking of track under the moving express train caused the engine and eight coaches to derail. Just 25 minutes before it, a train had passed on the same track without any problem.

It came as a surprise to railway officials as the area is not known for sinking of tracks. The Indian Railways generally applies safety curbs like speed restrictions in areas which are sinking prone.

A full fledged investigation by the commissioner of railway safety has been investigating the mishap.

Railway denies death
Initial reports had said one person was killed in the collision. However, the Eastern Railway general manager B. Barthua denied any death and said 30 passengers had injured.

"We take precautions by deputing patrolment but here in this location where the accident has taken place there is no such history. Commissioner for railway safety is already here. He is investigating to all the clues and he will come to a conclusion. So you will have to wait for the investigation to get over. We have got a total of 30 injured out of which 28 are simple injuries and only two are grievously injured," Barthua said.
