The state government had in December 2015 envisaged the idea of supplying drinking water through rail service from Sangli district to parched Latur.
1Jaldoot or water train supplied drinking water to parched Latur from Sangli.
2The train made 106 ferries till August 2016 to Latur.
3It took nearly 14 hours to fill 50 wagons of drinking water.
Maharashtra government first announced to send a water train to drought-hit Latur in 2015, one would have remotely imagined that it would reap a major political success for BJP in the Congress pocket borough.
Making a strong inroad, BJP is likely to win the polls to Latur Zilla Parishad with the party leading on 30 seats out of total 58.(Final tally is awaited.)
A Congress stronghold for the past six decades, Latur has been home to two former chief ministers and nine former Home ministers of Congress.
The state government had in December 2015 envisaged the idea of supplying drinking water through rail service from Sangli district to parched Latur.
BJP spokesperson Ram Kadam said, "We succeeded in giving a strong message of BJP cares for rural people and we can solve their issues. The water train was not only for the city but we provided (water) to neighbouring areas. We also undertook several works of Jalyukta Shivir. This perception benefited us largely."
Kadam was also the in-charge of Latur looking at the water train project.
The train, named Jaldoot, was run jointly by Indian Railways and state government, carried 50 wagons of water from Miraj junction and traversed 340-kms away to Latur city. There, the water was collected in a well located near railway tracks and was further carried into the city.
It would take nearly 14 hours to fill Jaldoot, carrying 25 lakh litres of water.
Since its first trip on April 11, 2016, the train made 106 ferries till August to Latur.

On Thursday, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) put in place special security arrangements around stations where protests were scheduled.
Gates closed for 30 mins
Exit gates at the ITO metro station were closed around noon when students gathered outside the police headquarters.
Sagar Kumar, a government employee, said gates were closed for almost 30 minutes. “I
saw protesters raising slogans near the ITO subway. A little inconvenience is better than any violence,” said Mr. Kumar.
Similar arrangements were in place at the Vishwavidyalaya and GTB Nagar stations, which are close to North Campus. The ABVP had scheduled protests outside the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) office and the Faculty of Arts.
“We did not want hooligans on the Metro. Extra staff was deployed and exit gates of stations close to the protest sites were closed,” a CISF spokesperson told The Hindu.

An ambitious technology upgrade plan of the Indian Railways aimed at providing enhanced passenger safety is threatening to go off-track on account of continuing upheaval in the Indian Railways Project Management Unit (IRPMU) – the agency that has been implementing the European technology, Train Protection Warning Systems (TPWS), on locomotives to prevent head-on collisions.
The IRPMU was renamed in June last year and work on TPWS execution was passed on to zonal general managers.
“Recent administrative changes such as the renaming of the IRPMU have been done to “cover up” the irregularities”, the
Bharatiya Railway Mazdoor Sangha – labour wing of the RSS’s Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangha – alleged in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 9.
BRMS employees have threatened an indefinite fast from April to protest “deliberate attempts by the Railways Ministry to misguide the PMO by “keeping wrong doings at the organization under wraps”.
Despite several telephone calls and messages, director general (signals and telecommunications) Akhil Agarwal remained unavailable for comments.
As reported first by Hindustan Times in its May 12, 2015 edition, irregularities in the functioning of the IRPMU – rechristened the National Capital Region Project Unit (NCRPU) –came to light following the December 2014 decision of the German KFW bank to discontinue its Euro 82.08 million (INR 440 crore) loan for executing the critical safety works including modernization of Signaling and Telecommunications (S&T) systems on India’s busiest train route from Ghaziabad to Kanpur.
Launched in 2003, the projected was scheduled for completion in 2009, but only 69% of sanctioned works have been completed so far.
In its report of November 2015, the Comptroller and Auditor General (C&AG) pointed to several transgressions such as poor progress of work, changes in contractual agreement and use of inferior material.
Surprisingly, the Railways – in its communication of 16 October 2016 – took the position that since the issue was being looked into by the C&AG, there was no need for an inquiry by either the Central Vigilance Commission or the Railway Vigilance.
“C&AG investigations are done with a focus on recommending corrective measures, while a probe into specific allegations of corrupt practices is done by the Railway Vigilance”, BRMS Delhi secretary Inderjeet Singh said.
