He was addressing a gathering at Yeshwantpur Railway Station after commissioning the Bengaluru-Hassan train service. was delivering his speech. Chief minister Siddaramaiah, too, supported the demand and urged the minister to lay the foundation stone for the project as early as May. "I'm with the people who are demanding a suburban train. The Centre must consider completing the works at the earliest," he said. The CM reminded the minister that his government had set aside Rs 345 crore for the project in its budget for 2017-18 and is ready to spare land too, which is estimated to cost over Rs 10,000 crore. In January, Suresh Prabhu and Siddaramaiah signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for development of the suburban railway system in Bengaluru with 50:50 cost-sharing. Suresh Prabhu said DigiPay will be installed at the main railway stations of Karnataka and declared Kranthi Veera Sangolli Rayanna Railway Station, Yeshwantpur Railway Station and Bangalore Cantonment Railway Satiation as 100 % cashless transaction-enabled. He inaugurated hi-speed Wi-Fi services at KSR, Yeshwantpur and Mysuru stations.

HIGHLIGHTS Dadar RPF on Saturday arrested a thief from the Hanuman temple at Marine Lines. His routine of visiting a particular shrine every week led to his arrest. He had stolen a portable data terminal worth Rs 20,000 from Dadar Station and sold it in Chor baazar in Rs 30. A week-long search for a history-sheeter bore fruit on Saturday, when he was arrested at the stroke of midnight after he had paid obeisance at a Hanuman temple at Marine Lines. A five-member team from the Dadar Railway Protection Force (RPF) would have said a quick thank-you to the Lord, as the thief's routine of visiting a particular shrine every week played a part in the arrest. Ashok Pawar, 60, a petty thief from Dadar, had gone missing after he stole a portable data terminal (a machine that's used to swipe cards and read barcodes) from the Central Railway's chief parcels...

supervisor's office on platform number seven at the Dadar Station on March 17. It emerged upon his arrest that the device, costing around Rs 20,000, was sold to a scrap dealer in Chor Bazaar for a measly Rs 30. The device had a huge collection of data, and the RPF formed teams to trace it. A senior railway cop who was a part of the search team said such devices have SIM cards which are used to trace them, just the way mobile phones are tracked. In this case, the device's location was shown to be Chor Bazaar."We identified the thief through CCTV images. He was captured entering the office, and inquiries revealed his identity and address. He lived in a shanty near Dadar station, and we spoke to shopkeepers and other shanty-dwellers, who revealed the thief was a very religious person," said Sachin Bhalode, senior divisional security commissioner, RPF-Central Railway. Investigation further revealed the thief's routine: A visit to a gurudwara in Sion Koliwada every Monday, a Friday visit to the Mahim Dargah, and an obeisance to Hanuman every Saturday at a temple at Marine Lines. "Our teams camped near these three places of worship and sure enough, he was spotted coming out of the Hanuman temple on Saturday night. He has been booked under Section 3 of the Railway Protection Act for unlawful possession and sent in judicial custody for two weeks," Bhalode said. The police also traced the device buyer, Aziz, who confirmed he had bought it for Rs 30. Aziz has also been booked for unlawful possession of railway property. "We had to act fast because it would have been very difficult to trace the device once its batteries drain out," Bhalode said.

One can using it in buses and ferries and to pay bills later, says KMRL chief
KOCHI: Kochi One, the pre-paid card for Kochi Metro commuters will be launched alongside or a little before the metro’s commissioning.
It can initially be used exclusively to gain entry into metro trains. “Other options like the card being used to commute in buses and ferries will be added later on. Similarly, efforts are on to rope in KSEB and KWA into the fold, so that people can pay power and water bills using the card,” said

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) Managing Director Elias George.
He termed the Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system as the first such open-card system in the country to usher in seamless integration between various modes of public transport. “By enabling a host of payment options, one of our aims is to woo car and two-wheeler owners to use the metro. ‘Melas’ will be held in the vicinity of metro stations to encourage people to purchase the card,” Mr. George added.
Having entered into a pact with Axis Bank in 2015 for the card, the metro agency had announced that it could also be used to purchase merchandise from shops near metro stations and boat jetties (which will come up in 2018-‘19 as part of the proposed water metro in the greater-Kochi area). KMRL is in discussions with Axis Bank to add ferries and KURTC buses to the system.
The Kochi-One smart card uses chip-card technology for making payments. This is popularly referred to as EMV (Europay, MasterCard, and Visa), a technical standard for smart cards.
According to the agreement, Axis Bank will bear the entire expense of the AFC system, besides paying ₹209 crore as royalty to KMRL for a decade. In return, it will get thousands of new customers. On its part, KMRL will get 0.20% of Axis Bank’s gross revenue from the utilisation of the co-branded debit card for non-commuting purposes.
The system uses Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) to collect fare from users of urban transportation systems.

Seventeen imported tunnel boring machines to start coming in from July
Mumbai: The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) hopes to begin the tunnelling work for the 33.5-km Metro 3 corridor from October.
“As per the contracts awarded for constructing Metro stations, the contractor will have to procure the tunnel boring machines. An order for 17 machines has already been placed and by October, we hope to start the actual tunnelling work,” MMRC Managing Director Ashwini Bhide said.

said the machines, which are being imported from Germany, Austria, Canada and other countries, will start coming in from July. Though imported, all the machines have been manufactured in China.
The machines will dig twin tunnels for the entire stretch of the ₹23,136-crore Metro line from Colaba at the southern tip of the megapolis to Seepz (Andheri) in the north. The MMRC hopes dig 200 metres of tunnels every day.
The corporation has fabricated the first tunnel ring for the underground Metro at its Wadala casting yard. These segment rings will help strengthen the tunnels.
According to MMRC project director S.K. Gupta, the initial tunnelling may begin from locations like Cuffe Parade, Pali Naka in Bandra and Naya Nagar in Mahim. “Two shafts are getting ready near Pali Naka and Naya Nagar, so we can start the work from these areas,” he said.
“The shafts at other locations are also getting ready, but they may take some time as the tree-felling issue is still getting resolved. But we are confident of starting tunnelling at least at these three locations,” he said.
The Bombay High Court had last week issued a notice to the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), seeking its response on whether it had granted clearance to the MMRC to construct nine stations under the Metro 3 project. The High Court was hearing a petition filed by residents of Churchgate against the proposed cutting of 5,000 trees for the corridor.
The petitioners said that nine stations on the route fall in the Coastal Regulation Zone, and that the MoEF has refused permission to MMRC to carry out construction in those areas.
MMRC counsel Aspi Chinoy said the rail corporation was incurring heavy monetary losses due to the pendency of the petition, as the High Court had earlier restricted the authority from cutting any trees till further orders from the court.

Pretending to be their Syrian handler, ahead of bombing of Ujjain-bound train, he helped to secure the arrest of three IS sympathisers.
On March 7, the Madhya Pradesh police arrested three men — Danish Akhtar, Syed Mir Hussain and Atif Muzaffar — from Pipariya, around 300 km from Bhopal, for allegedly planting a pipe bomb on the Bhopal-Ujjain passenger train. Nine people were injured in the explosion.
The bomb was planted around 8.30 a.m. at the Bhopal railway station and it exploded around one-and-half-hours later when the train reached the Shajapur station.

Within hours, the Madhya Pradesh police announced that the three men, who had planted the bomb in the passenger train, had been arrested on the basis of information provided by Central intelligence agencies.
Four others were arrested from Uttar Pradesh while one man, Saifullah, was killed in an encounter in Thakurganj area of Lucknow the same night.
U.P. ADG Daljit Singh Chaudhary told a news agency a day later that the Telangana police had provided specific intelligence about the whereabouts of the group, who were inspired by the Islamic State. A senior Home Ministry official told The Hindu that the accused were caught within hours as they were being trailed by a Telangana police officer.
The police officer followed the accused from Lucknow when they boarded the Pushpak Express on March 6 and even when they got down at the Bhopal railway station.
“This officer had penetrated the various social media platforms the group used to search for information related to the Islamic State. All of them are self-radicalised and they even made several attempts to go to Syria and even to Kashmir for jihad. When they failed, they decided to do something in India,” the Ministry official said.
Gaining their trust
The Telangana officer gained their trust and pretended to be their Syria-based handler.
The DGP, Telangana, Anurag Sharma, could not be contacted for comment, despite repeated attempts.
“The accused told their handler they wanted to procure explosives and weapons. They downloaded al-Qaeda’s propaganda magazine Inspire and IS’s magazine Dabiq to learn how to prepare the bomb. They made the bomb at the rented house in Lucknow, where Saifullah was killed. On March 7, three of them boarded Pushpak Express from Lucknow and wanted to plant the bomb in it. Seeing the crowd, they dropped the plan and travelled till Bhopal in the Mumbai-bound train,” the official said.
The official said that the police officer had not known till then that they had planted the explosives, and got to know about it only when one of them, Atif Muzaffar, sent him a photograph an hour later. They were on way to Allahabad when they were caught at Pipariya, and from there they planned to reach Lucknow.
On March 9, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan claimed that Atif Muzaffar, a resident of Kanpur was the “mastermind of the attack” and the accused belonged to IS. “They clicked the photo of the bomb and sent it to their handlerWhen they got off the train at Bhopal, they saw a passenger train across the platform and planted the bomb on the upper berth of the train. It departed soon after,” said the official. in Syria. One of them is a mechanic and they learnt the preparation of the bomb through Internet,” Mr. Chouhan had told a news agency.
Coordinated operation
“It was at this time that the police officer alerted other agencies and a coordinated operation was launched to nab them. He was still trailing them and it was he who gave the exact location of the men when they were arrested at Pipariya. The officer told U.P police about the house where Saifullah was staying and he even told them about the room where he was holed up,” said the official.
The same day, Madhya Pradesh police released a video footage to the media, where the two accused were seen alighting from a bus near a toll plaza. The video appears to have been shot by someone who was keeping a watch on them from a distance. At one point, the person shooting the video even asks a person who comes in front of his camera to move away.
The official said that the blast could have been averted had the Telengana police officer alerted the U.P police when the accused were procuring weapons and explosives. Eight pistols, gun powder and shrapnel were recovered from the house where Saifullah was killed.
“At best, we could describe them as an IS-inspired group, but with no direct connection with anyone in Syria. Mohammad Ghaus Khan, a former IAF employee was their ideologue,” said the official.
After initially claiming the accused belonged to the Khorasan wing of the IS, the Uttar Pradesh police retracted their statement and said the accused were “self proclaimed” members of the terrorist group.
In his statement to the Lok Sabha, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said: “M.P Police coordinated with Central agencies for the investigation of the incident. Subsequently, based on available intelligence, three suspects were taken into custody by M.P. Police during vehicle checking at Pipariya in district Hoshangabad.”

Accuses Chief Minister of not pursuing the matter with the Centre; good response to YSRC rally
YSR Congress MP Vijay Sai Reddy has said that he would raise the issue of new railway zone for Andhra Pradesh with Visakhapatnam as its headquarters in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
He participated in an awareness rally organised by the party on Beach Road on Sunday ahead of party district president Gudivada Amarnadh’s proposed ‘Atma Gaurava Yatra’ for the railway zone from March 30.
The

rally, which began at the statue of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, drew good response from morning walkers, academicians, and intellectuals.
Mr. Reddy said that the new railway zone for Andhra Pradesh was promised in the A.P. Reorganisation Act prior to bifurcation of the State. It was one of the main assurances that should have been granted within six months of bifurcation. “But no decision has been announced nearly three years after formation of the new government,” he said. Mr. Reddy said that the Chief Minister seemed to be content with making statements that a new railway zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters would become a reality. He was not exerting any pressure on the Centre for fulfilment of the assurance. He sought an early announcement on the zone as the future of the backward North Andhra region was dependent on it.
Mr. Amarnadh said that both the TDP and BJP cheated the people of North Andhra by promising the new railway zone with headquarters in Visakhapatnam before the elections and ignoring it later.
It became an election plank for the BJP-TDP during the recent election to the Graduates’ Constituency from North Andhra. He appealed to all political parties to extend their support to the ‘Atma Gaurava Yatra’.
Mr. Amarnadh met leaders of the CPI and the CPI(M) and sought their support. Leaders of the Left parties agreed to attend the ‘padayatra’.
Morning walkers, senior citizens, and the general public were explained the importance of the railway zone.
