Yes AC travellers can afford fares but if 2nd & 1A fares are hiked by 10-15% then it can easily backfire as it would become costlier than Airlines. Travellers would simply switch for saving time

My father is also in railway... but my family is not supported to increase fare.... railway ki fan following ka main reason train fare ka kam hona bhi tha... aise to dhire dhire logo me trains ka craze kam ho jayega

Even after increased fare,its still very cheap. I mean mostly people travel 3-4 times a year on average.
And railways is safe for atleast 20 years from airlines bcoz there is not much infrastructure on aviation sector itself, that can deal with such traffic. According to indigo airlines they need 400 new planes to take 1% of Indian railways. Which is a lot considering that they have 102 planes right now, and has biggest domestic fleet size after air india
