Art is not something that should remain within the confines of four walls of Art galleries. Art has to provide meaning to the lives of people. Driven by this passion, a city artist descended at Ajni Railway Station and provided a touch of her artistry to otherwise mundane walls and pillars. What a transformation she has done. The general drab railway station now basks in the vividness of bright colours, perfectly.
The person who has transformed the Ajni station is Priyanka Wankhede, a city girl who aspires to give a facelift to Nagpur that is fast becoming the most happening place. Priyanka wondered why not make the most of her talent and thoughts by giving a new look to contemporary walls and
steps of Ajni railway station.  Priyanka’s enthusiasm got wings following local railway officials’ in-principle approval to her plan.
After getting the green signal in the last week of March, Priyanka got to work, all alone. She painstakingly worked hard to make her creativity get a touch of class. She started by giving a new look to the compound wall.
Believing in -- The first impression is the last impression -- she says, “A gaze on the bright colourful walls with vibrant pictures gives a different impression about the city to the visitors.”
The steps leading to foot-over-Bridge (FoB) also have various pictures. She attempted to incorporate city’s structures in her paintings. Upcoming metro rail, the Zero Mile Stone, the Geographical Mile Stone, a part of heritage as well as history, are on her wide canvas.
Similarly, life at the railway station has vivid reflection in the images that include a person taking a selfie, the latest hobby, especially among youths.
Although diminutive, Priyanka has set her sight on towering heights as she shares her dream with ‘The Hitavada’ of painting the cooling towers of Koradi Thermal Power Plant (KTPS). While entering city one sees huge overhead water tanks on top of buildings and she is dreaming as to how they would look if draped in colourful motifs. Yes, she accepts these are quite challenging tasks but are determined to find ways to don them with her creativity.
Such paintings are common in Mumbai as almost all railway stations have been painted by local artists. Similarly, in Western countries, the cooling towers of power plants are smartly painted, she added.
For Priyanka, the helping hands on part of railway officials assured that her task accomplished smoothly. Otherwise, unlike foreign countries where crowd-funding easily provide support to such thoughts, projects in India are bit difficult.

Central Railway has told the railway ministry that it will require 15 Mainline Electrical Multiple Units (MEMUs) to replace 11 trains that are hauled by diesel locomotives on several passenger routes. MEMUs are like Mumbai's local trains but with one major difference that they are narrower. The good news for the passengers is that these MEMUs are faster and can allow CR to run more trips on some routes where patronage is high.
CR will also be setting up a carshed for the maintenance and overhaul of these MEMUs at Ajni near Nagpur. At the moment, CR does not have any MEMU carshed. which was one of the reasons the recently-commissioned Pune-Daund electrified line got a diesel-powered Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU).
the difference an official said, "DEMUs have diesel power cars (DPCs) which have smaller engines in comparison to a diesel locomotive and consume less fuel. Replacing short distance passenger trains (having 5-10 coaches) with DEMUs will give fuel saving of approximate 10%. However, studies have also shown that running trains on electric traction is cheaper by about 47% for freight traffic and 50% cheaper for coaching traffic, as compared to diesel traction. Therefore, it is better to have MEMUs on an electrified line than DEMUs."
According to CR officials, these plans to have MEMUs and DEMUs are part of the railways Mission Raftaar which seeks to increase the average speed of trains in the country.
Indian Railways is among the slowest in the world when it comes to major railway networks. While the maximum speed of passenger trains has increased up to 130 kmph-160 kmph, the average speed is hovering around 45 kmph. While the maximum speed of freight trains has increased up to 75 kmph-100 kmph, but the average speed is hovering around 24 kmph

Nagpur: The Electric Loco Shed, Ajni, under Central Railway's Nagpur division has achieved a milestone by completing maintenance of 222 locos in the current financial year. This is already 47 locos more than its capacity to overhaul 175 locos each year. The Central Railway is in process of increasing Shed's capacity to 200 locos which would pave way for even higher output in coming years.
shed at Ajni is considered best among 30 loco sheds in the country. In 2009-10 railway budget sanctioned works to increase its capacity from 120 to 175. However, in July 2014, even before expansion, it had flagged off its 200th locomotive.
The shed was set up on September 22, 1990, to maintain goods train locomotives. In the past 27 years, it has come a long way and is now maintaining all types of locomotives that haul goods trains as well as premium trains like Rajdhani, Duronto and other mail/express ones.
Namdeo Rabade, senior divisional electric engineer (SrDEE) for traction rolling stock (TRS), told TOI divisional railway manager (DRM) Brijesh Kumar Gupta was pushing for speedy expansion. Gupta also visited the shed last week.
The entire facility is spread over 18 acres of which the shed itself covers three acres. Now it is being expanded. The area in repair section has been extended and a 50-tonne capacity crane has been added. Similarly, auxiliary changing, transformer changing, work for underground pits each for inspection and testing and for carrying major schedules are being constructed. Besides, an electronic lab having advanced testing facilities for various type of electronic cards used in 3-phase WAP 7 & WAP 9 locos will also be in place. The shed has switched to LED lighting, which has helped save almost 10% energy till last month.
"This was possible owing to several factors like hi-tech locos with better technology, procuring of new machines and additional staff, besides better funds flow. In 2015-16, Railway Board sanctioned Rs10.75 crore and this financial year it is Rs3.50 crore," says Rabde.
Rabde added another reason for exceeding maintenance target was reliability of locos, improved workshop culture, especially after installation of CCTV cameras and biometric system, besides staff welfare measures. Ajni loco shed has also reduced failure rate by 25%. "By next year, we plan to achieve a target of 250 locos," he added.

Nagpur: Central Railway divisional railway manager (DRM) Brijesh Kumar Gupta has decided to push for regularization of Nagpur-Amritsar and Nagpur-Pune special trains.
On March 4, TOI had reported the mess over these budgeted air-conditioned superfast special trains which are being operated by seeking extensions from time to time for the last two years.
The latest move comes after a delegation of Khalsa Seva Dal submitted a memorandum to Gupta on March 8, demanding to regularize the train by changing its days.
told TOI, "There is no problem in regularizing these special trains. However, changing days of trains is an inter-zonal issue. This will also need sanction from other railway zones in between. I have sent proposal to headquarters and the Railway Board will take a final call. I am pushing for it."
Harjinder Singh Juneja, member of Khalsa Seva Dal, said the delegation highlighted practical difficulties to the DRM. For example, the special train to Amritsar operates on Saturdays when there are at least five trains towards Delhi within a span of four hours. So, only those travelling to Amritsar will prefer the train.
Another member Madhu Kapoor said similar is the issue with Nagpur-Pune AC special train, which operates on Tuesdays. "Who would prefer special train to Pune when Nagpur-Pune Garib Rath is available for Rs 800? The fare of special train is Rs 1,545," she said.
"We suggested to operate the train to Amritsar on either Wednesdays or Fridays instead of Saturday. On these two days, there is no train from 4pm to 8.30pm. We also suggested to operate the train to Pune on any other day instead of Tuesday," said Brajbhushan Shukla, member of zonal railway users' consultative committee (ZRUCC).
Presently, the special train is not punctual on both Pune and Amritsar direction. Once regularized with changed days, the traffic is likely to pick up, the delegation told the DRM.
Nagpur-Amritsar-Nagpur (0125-0126) has been extended till April 3 and Ajni-Pune-Ajni (02123-02124) till April 7. Railway sources said these trains are expected to be regularized and, hence, no further extension may be granted.

Since this is the unique and only one train is operated in this route from Pune Mini Metro via Kalyan and Konkan.

peoples also benefitted by this train conversion as SF and run permanently.

नागपूर : अजनी यार्डातून निघालेली मालगाडी अचानक रुळावरून घसरली. ही घटना आज मंगळवारी दुपारी १२.४५ वाजताच्या सुमारास घडली. मालगाडी मेनलाईनवर येण्याआधीच हा अपघात घडला. याबाबत मिळालेल्या माहितीनुसार, नरेंद्रनगरातील कंटेनर कॉर्पोरेशन आॅफ इंडिया(कॉनकोर)चा इनलँड कंटेनर सोमवारी रात्री अजनी यार्डात पोहोचला.
आज दुपारी हा कंटेनर अजनी यार्डातून निघून मेनलाईनवर येत असताना नरेंद्रनगरजवळ वॅगन क्रमांक २७ चे दोन चाक रुळावरून घसरले. गाडी मेनलाईनवर नसल्याने वाहतूक अवरुद्ध झाली नाही. दोन तासांच्या परिश्रमानंतर गाडी पुन्हा रुळावर आली. दरम्यान, अजनी यार्डातील चार युनिट परत करावे लागले. हा अपघात जर मेनलाईनवर घडला असता तर दिल्ली-मुंबई-हावडा मार्गावरील रेल्वे वाहतूक विस्कळीत होण्याची शक्यता होती.(प्रतिनिधी)
गाडीच्या रुळावरून घसरण्याच्या घटना वाढत आहेत. आता तर मालगाडीचे चाक यार्डातच घसरले. यावरून असे जाणवते की, रेल्वे बोगींच्या देखरेखीत निष्काळजीपणा केला जात आहे.
ही घटना मेनलाईनवर घडली असती तर वाहतूक प्रभावित झाली असती.
या घटनेत चालकाला दोषी धरले जात आहे. पण घटना गाडी मेनलाईनवर येण्याआधी घडली, हे मात्र सोयीस्करपणे लपवले जात आहे.

नागपूर रेल्वे स्थानकावरील भार कमी होणार
अजनी रेल्वे स्थानकाला ‘सॅटेलाईट स्टेशन’ म्हणून विकसित करण्यात येत असून तीन रेल्वेगाडय़ा येथून सोडण्यात येणार आहेत. नागपूर रेल्वे स्थानकाऐवजी अजनीहून रेल्वेगाडय़ा सोडण्यात येणार असल्याने खऱ्या अर्थाने अजनी ‘सॅटलाईट स्टेशन’ होत आहे.
रेल्वे मंत्री सुरेश प्रभू यांनी रेल्वे अर्थसंकल्पात नागपूर मध्यवर्ती रेल्वे स्थानकापासून तीन किलोमीटरवरील अजनी रेल्वे स्थानकाला ‘सॅटेलाईट स्टेशन’ घोषित केले होते. या रेल्वे स्थानकाचा उद्देश मुख्य नागपूर रेल्वे स्थानकावरील रेल्वेगाडय़ांचा आणि प्रवाशांचा ताण कमी करणे आहे. अजनीला अधिकाधिक गाडय़ांचे थांबे देण्याची जुनी मागणी आहे. मुंबई आणि पुण्याकडे जाणाऱ्या गाडय़ांना थांबे देण्यात यावे, अशी प्रवाशांची मागणी आहे.
या मागण्यांचा विचार करता येथून काही गाडय़ा सोडण्यात यावे, असा विचार पुढे आला. त्यातून अजनीला ‘सॅटलाईट स्टेशन’ म्हणून विकसित करण्यात येत आहे. या स्थानकाला याआधी ‘मॉडेल स्टेशन’च्या यादीत समाविष्ट करण्यात आले होते.
तसेच टर्मिनल म्हणून विकसित करण्याची योजना होती. परंतु केवळ सहा ते सात गाडय़ांचा काही मिनिटांचे थांबे देण्यात आले होते. परंतु ‘सॅटलाईट स्टेशन’ म्हणून विकसित करण्याच्या घोषणेनंतर अमरावती, काझीपेठ आणि एलटीटी या गाडय़ा येथून सोडण्यात येत आहेत. यापुढे काही महिन्यांनी पुण्यासाठी गाडी येथून सोडण्यात येणार आहे.
नागपूर रेल्वे स्थानकावरून दररोज सुमारे १२५ गाडय़ांची ये-जा असते. या रेल्वे स्थानकावर दररोज सुमारे ५० हजार प्रवाशांची वर्दळ असते. एवढय़ा प्रमाणात प्रवाशांची संख्या बघता रेल्वे सुरक्षा आणि वाहनतळाची व्यवस्था करणे अडचणी ठरते. त्यामुळे या रेल्वे स्थानकावरील भार कमी करता यावा म्हणून नागपूर रेल्वे स्थानकाऐवजी अजनी रेल्वे स्थानकांहून काही गाडय़ा सोडण्यात येत आहेत. अजनी रेल्वे स्थानक पश्चिम नागपूर, दक्षिण नागपूर आणि दक्षिण-पश्चिम नागपूरमधील प्रवाशांना सोयीचे पडते. त्याचा विचार करून अजनीला टर्मिनल विकसित करण्यात येत आहे. भविष्यात आणखी काही गाडय़ा येथून सुटतील, असे मध्य रेल्वेचे जनसंपर्क अधिकारी प्रवीण पाटील म्हणाले.
गोधनी ‘सॅटेलाईट स्टेशन’ प्रस्तावित
नागपूर दिल्ली मार्गावरील गोधनी रेल्वे स्थानकाला ‘सॅटलाईट स्टेशन’ म्हणून विकसित करण्याचे प्रस्तावित आहे. त्यामुळे भविष्यात दिल्ली मार्गावर धावणाऱ्या रेल्वेगाडय़ा या रेल्वे स्थानकावरून सुटतील. सध्या अजनी रेल्वे स्थानकावरून अमरावती, काझीपेठ आणि एलटीटी (मुंबई)करिता रेल्वेगाडी सोडण्यात येत आहेत. यापूर्वी या तीनही गाडय़ा नागपूर मध्यवर्ती रेल्वे स्थानकांहून सोडण्यात येत होत्या. अशाप्रकारे अजनी रेल्वे स्थानकाला टर्मिनलचा दर्जा देण्यात आला आहे. यासाठी अजनी रेल्वे स्थानकावर फलाट क्रमांक २ आणि ३ वर सुविधा उपलब्ध करण्यात आली.
‘सॅटेलाईट स्टेशन’ म्हणजे काय?
शहरातील मुख्य रेल्वे स्थानकावरील रेल्वेगाडय़ांची गर्दी कमी करण्यासाठी शहरातील दुसऱ्या एका स्थानकावर काही गाडय़ा सोडण्याची व्यवस्था केली जाते. मुख्य रेल्वेला पर्यायी रेल्वे स्थानक विकसित केले जाते. त्या रेल्वे स्थानकाला रेल्वेगाडी थांबण्याची आणि तेथूनच सोडण्यात येऊ शकेल, अशा पद्धतीने सुविधा उपलब्ध करण्यात येतात.

रेल्वेचा अर्थसंकल्प सादर होण्यास काही दिवस असताना नागपूरकरांसाठी काय असेल याविषयी चर्चा सुरू झाली असून प्रवाशांनी या अर्थसंकल्पातून बऱ्याच अपेक्षा व्यक्त केल्या आहेत.
रेल्वेमंत्री सुरेश प्रभू हे येत्या २५ फेब्रुवारीला अर्थसंकल्प सादर करणार आहेत. नवीन गाडय़ा आणि रेल्वेतील सोयी-सुविधांबद्दलची मोठी आशा बाळगण्यात येत असून यासाठी मोठय़ा गुंतवणुकीची आवश्यकता आहे, परंतु काही प्रवाशांनी रेल्वेवर फारसा आर्थिक बोझा न पडताही नागपुरातील प्रवाशांना दिलासा दिला जाऊ शकतो, अशा काही उपाययोजना शहरातील जागरूक प्रवाशांनी सुचवल्या आहेत.
आकार आणि रेल्वेस्थानकांची संख्या बघता मध्यवर्ती रेल्वेस्थानकावरील भार कमी करण्याची मागणी सातत्याने होत आहे. मध्यवर्ती रेल्वेस्थानक असल्याने नागपूर रेल्वेस्थानकावर प्रवाशांची प्रचंड गर्दी असते. या भागात होणारी वाहतुकीची कोंडी बघता या रेल्वेस्थानकावर प्रवेश करताना आणि तेथून बाहेर पडताना फारच त्रास सहन करावा लागतो. नागपुरातून सर्वाधिक प्रवासी पुणे, मुंबई मार्गावर प्रवास करतात. अजनी रेल्वेस्थानकावर अधिकाधिक गाडय़ांचे थांबे देऊन ही समस्या बऱ्यापैकी कमी केली जाऊ शकते.
मुंबईहून नागपूरला येणाऱ्या ज्या गाडय़ांना अजनी येथे थांबा आहे, या गाडय़ातील जवळपास ४८ टक्के प्रवासी अजनीला उतरतात, तर दक्षिणेकडून येणाऱ्या गाडय़ातील २६ टक्के प्रवासी अजनीला उतरणे पसंत करतात, असे त्यांच्या पाहणीतून आढळून आले आहे. त्यामुळे दूरान्तोसह इतर गाडय़ांना अजनीला थांबा दिल्यास मध्यवर्ती रेल्वेस्थानकावरील गर्दी कमी करता येणे शक्य आहे. शिवाय प्रवाशांना देखील वाहतूक कोंडीतून बाहेर पडल्याचा दिलासा मिळेल.
मध्य रेल्वेच्या तत्कालीन विभागीय व्यवस्थापकांनी नागपूर रेल्वेस्थानकावरून ‘प्री-पेड’ ऑटोरिक्षा सुविधा सुरू केली. त्याला चांगला प्रतिसाद मिळाला. त्याचप्रमाणे अजनी रेल्वेस्थानकावर देखील अशी सुविधा झाल्यास प्रवाशांची सोय आणि लूटही थांबेल. लांबचा प्रवास करताना झोपेतील प्रवाशांना पुढला थांबा कोणता याची माहिती यंत्रणा अजूनही अनेक गाडय़ांमध्ये नाही. त्यामुळे फलाटावर गाडी थांबवल्यावर झोपलेल्या प्रवाशांची तारांबळ उडते आणि घाईगडबडीत गाडीतून उतरणे शक्य होत नाही. तसा प्रयत्न झाल्यास अपघात होण्याची शक्यता अधिक असते.
यामुळे प्रत्येक डब्यात इलेट्रॉनिक पडदा लावून सातत्याने रेल्वेस्थानक, किलोमीटर आणि वेळ दाखवण्यात यावी. यामुळे इतर प्रवाशांना त्रासही होणार नाही आणि संबंधित प्रवाशाला त्याला उतरावयाच्या स्थानकाची माहिती मिळेल, असे वाहतूक अभ्यासक सुधीर वैद्य म्हणाले.
रेल्वेचे सध्या मध्यवर्ती रेल्वेस्थानकावर लक्ष केंद्रित झाले आहे. तेथे स्वच्छता आणि इतर सुविधा वाढवण्यात आली आहे, परंतु अजनी रेल्वेस्थानकावर अस्वच्छता असून असह्य़ दरुगधी आहे. त्याचा बंदोबस्त करण्यात यायला हवा.
तात्काळ तिकीट विक्रीला १० वाजता सुरुवात होते. पुण्याचे तात्काळ तिकीट ऑनलाईन बुकिंग करताना ‘बुक नाऊ’चा पर्याय साडेदहा ते पावणेअकरापर्यंत उपलब्ध होत नाही आणि जेव्हा हा पर्याय संगणकाच्या पडद्यावर येईस्तोवर सर्व तिकिटांची विक्री झालेली असते. हा अनुभव एकदा नव्हे अनेकदा आला आहे. परंतु हेच तिकीट दलालाकडून किंवा अन्य महानगरातून खरेदी केल्यास उपलब्ध होते. या प्रकाराची चौकशी करून रेल्वेने तातडीने कारवाई करणे आवश्यक आहे, असे वैद्य यांचे सहकारी मधुकर लोहे म्हणाले.
रेल्वेकडून अपेक्षा
* पुण्याकडे जाणाऱ्या गाडय़ांना वर्षभर गर्दी असते. त्यामुळे या मार्गावर नवीन गाडी सुरू करण्यात यावी तसेच गरीबरथ गाडी दररोज सोडण्यात यावी.
* पुण्यासाठी दूरान्तो एक्सप्रेस सुरू करण्याची मागणी आहे.
* मुंबईला देखील कायम गर्दी असते. दूरान्तो एक्सप्रेस दररोज सोडण्यात यावी.
* अजनी रेल्वेस्थानकावर अधिकाधिक गाडय़ांना थांबे देण्यात यावे. नागपूर मध्यवर्ती रेल्वेस्थानकाला पर्याय म्हणून अजनी रेल्वेस्थानक विकसित करण्यात यावे.

Nagpur: Buoyed by the successful maintenance of locos and transition of electric loco shed at Ajni, the Railway Board has offered another major facility and training centre to maintain 12,000 horse power (HP) locos at Ajni under the Nagpur Central Railway.
According to railway sources, the Rs.100 crore facility will come up in 10-12 acre with public-private partnership (PPP) near existing loco shed at Ajni where huge space is available. Railways is giving top priority to construction of freight related projects on PPP basis.
Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) OP Singh confirmed that project
to maintain 12,000 HP locos was coming up at Ajni. “The electric locos that will be manufactured at Madhepura in Bihar will be maintained at Ajni. Tenders for the project have been opened and entire process is being handled and managed by the Railway Board,” Singh said.
The entire new facility will have the latest equipment. Ajni loco shed, spread in 18.5 acres, presently maintains WAG-7 & WAG-9 locos used for hauling freight trains and WAP-7 engines used for premium trains like Duronto and Rajdhani.
However, the locos currently maintained at Ajni are 6,000 HP locomotives. These engines can transport up to 5,500 tonne material consisting of 58 wagons. However, 12,000 HP engines will be able to ferry 10,000 tonne goods with double the number of wagons what are being used now.
Sources said the 12,000 HP locos would be operated on the Rs.81,459 crore ambitious dedicated freight corridor (DFC), meant for faster goods movement. The project is expected to be completed by 2019 and before the DFC is ready railways wants the basic infrastructure to be ready.
With the new loco maintenance facility, a training institute at the same place for staff has been planned. The project is expected to be in place in next two-three years. The decision was taken after executive director (electrical) Sudhir Kumar and DRM Singh had met in Nagpur. “The duo had also visited the spot at Ajni,” sources said.
The Ajni loco shed after its transition is continuously marching ahead. Despite having a capacity of maintaining 175 locos annually, it has achieved a target of 208, that too with existing staff and infrastructure. The locos maintained at Ajni are moving across the Indian Railways network.
The Ajni loco shed, set up in 1990, will complete 25 years on October 22, and Central Railway has planned a host of cultural and sports competitions to celebrate the success of the shed which has come a long way.

अजनी Ajni: A new chapter has unfolded in the history of Electric Loco Shed, Ajni. The first Electric locomotive 23502 (WAG-5) was commissioned on 22.10.1990 and 100th Locomotive 23863 “Shakti” was commissioned on 07.04.1994. 1st three phase locomotive was commissioned on 02.11.2003. Now 200th locomotive “ASHOKA” belonging to new generation high horse power technology commissioned. Ajni is the first shed in Central Railway and 7th in Indian Railway to hold 200+ locomotives.

We are proud to be 1st shed in Indian Railway to hold highest 140 three phase locomotives. Out of
these, 126 locomotives are with GTO based technology and 14 are with latest and most advanced IGBT technology. 1st IGBT locomotive was commissioned on 18.04.2011.

In order to cater the coal mining areas of Vidarbha and erstwhile Madhya Pradesh the Electric Loco Shed, Ajni was constructed on 22.09.1990 to maintain Goods Locomotives for the coal loaded trains. Since past 24 years shed has maintained various types of locomotives such as WAM-4 for Mail Express trains, 5000 HP WAG-7 locomotive for hauling goods train and now prestigious WAP-7 and WAG-9 three phase ‘State of Art technology’ locomotives to haul important trains like Rajdhani, Duranto and other Mail/express and goods trains respectively. Goods locomotives are mainly utilized for wide spread freight operations primarily in Central Railway and in other railways as well.
Shed is spread over a land area of 18 Acres in which covered shed is 3 Acres. Shed is carrying out preventive maintenance of electric locomotives with pre decided periodicity such as Minor schedules (Monthly, bimonthly) and Major schedules (18 months and 54/72 months) with man power of 4 per loco.
Shed is having infrastructure such as 2 nos. 50 T EOT cranes for heavy work of Bogies, 4 nos. 35/15 T EOT cranes for light work such as Auxiliary changing, Transformer changing etc. , 04 nos . under ground pits each for inspection and testing, 03 pits for carrying major schedules and 4 pits for carrying out heavy work, Oil filtration plants, forklifters, jib crane , well equipped Chemical and Metallurgical Lab, Electronic lab having advanced testing facilities for various type of electronic cards used in 3- phase locomotive, Motorised Bogie testing facility etc. Shed is having Pit Wheel Lathe machine as well for wheel profiling. Shed is also having multi tier stacking arrangement for Transformers, Traction motors, Wheel sets and Auxiliary machines.
Expansion of shed is under progress and is likely to be completed by this year end.
