The High Court asked Railways to run trains to Thane, Dombivali and Ambernath to reduce crowding at CST.
Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Wednesday suggested that Railways examine the possibility of finding a path to start local trains services from Churchgate to central suburbs like Thane, Dombivali and Ambernath to reduce crowding at Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). However, records show that Railways had already discussed this matter and claimed it isn’t feasible.
The division bench of Justice V.M. Kanade and Justice Nutan Dessai made the suggestion while hearing public interest litigations (PILs)

about prevention of accidents and emergency medical treatment on the Mumbai suburban network. During the hearing, the issue of overcrowding in trains was also discussed and since overcrowding in locals had resulted in several fatal accidents, the court expressed a desire for Railways to adopt methods that could reduce crowding in local trains.
The bench was of the view that if Railways could run trains between CST and Andheri, why couldn’t it run services between Churchgate and Thane. The bench said that currently trains from Churchgate ply only on the western suburbs route and the line does not have any connection with Central Railway (CR) apart from the Dadar railway station.
According to the judges, a number of commuters who have offices in Churchgate and Nariman Point can go to Churchgate station and take trains to the central suburbs instead of going all the way to CST. This would reduce the crowd at CST also. “Let this suggestion be looked into by experts from the field. Maybe a separate corridor can be set up,” said Justice Kanade.
In the meantime, Suresh Kumar, the counsel for Railways, informed the court that crowding-related casualties had reduced considerably on the harbour line — which starts from CST — after the introduction of 12-car rakes, but such incidents are still witnessed on the western and central line. He also told the court that an increase in deaths due to rooftop travelling had been noticed.
To address various railway-related issues, the court called the Mumbai police commissioner, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation commissioner and high-ranking officers of Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority, City and Industrial Development Corporation and Railways to discuss and resolve the issue. The court will hear the matter on December 8.

Ambernath (ABH): A century-old water dam at Ambernath, that had been set up by the the Great Indian Peninsula Railway (GIPR) which is called as Central Railway now, has been revived and turned into a Railway water bottling plant that will produce two lakh bottles a day.
Branded as ‘Rail Neer’, the bottles will be sold in trains and at all stations. This is the Indian Railways’ fourth such bottling plant and the first in the western region – the other three being those located at Nangloi (Delhi) in the north, Danapur (Patna) in the east, and Palur (Chennai) in the south.
The

plant was recently inaugurated by Minister of Railways Sadanand Gowda, via remote control on August 13, 2014.
Built circa 1915, the dam was originally used to store and supply water for steam locomotives. Since 1997, however, it has been lying unused.
Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation said that the Ambernath Dam facility will have a full-fledged bottling plant. This will include a water treatment facility, rinsing, filling and capping, coding, labelling and packing machines, besides conveyors, chillers and a cooling tower with storage facilities for four to five days’ production.
“Laboratory facilities with all instruments and equipment for inhouse testing and analysis have also been set up. The plant will produce about two lakh bottles of one litre capacity per day, which will be around 16,667 cartons with each having 12 bottles,” a senior official said.
Local villagers of Ambernath and Kalyan, however, are not quite happy that the plant is set to start functioning. For years they had been demanding that water from the dam be released for various purposes in their hamlets, but the Railways obviously had other plans.
“It seems we have lost the battle to the water bottle. The villagers still need additional water supply, but now plan to tap other resources,” Sunil Chaudhary, president of Ambernath Municipal Council, told.
“We tried to convince the Railways. I even raised the issue in the Maharashtra legislature seeking help of the State Government,” said Ambernath MLA Balaji Kinikar. “But ultimately the dam belongs to the Railways and they are the decision makers,” he added.
Watering of Steam Locomotives near the Ambarnath Dam by GIPR
Indian Railways stopped steam locomotives production in 1970 and by 1985, all the the existing steam locomotives were gradually phased out. Till 1997, around 75 steam engines were still used. But now, their usage has been totally stopped for passenger and freight purposes. They run only on heritage routes.
Ambernath platforms pose daily risk for commuters
Uneven surfaces, craters and inconsistent height of platforms have made boarding and alighting from suburban trains in the township difficult as well as dangerous

due to uneven surfaces, inconsistent height, as well as huge craters on all three platforms there.
Almost daily, several commuters trip and fall while boarding or alighting from trains, some narrowly escaping landing on the tracks.
At platform No 2 for instance, a partoftheplatformispavedandisata proper height to the footboard of trains. But a section of the platform, spanning over two compartments, hasnotbeenpaved.Whentheheight of platforms was raised a couple of years ago, the contractor did not care to install tiles but simply paved the surface with cement. This has resulted in the cemented stretch being at least two inches lower than the tiled portion.
The situation is no different on platform No 1, where a long stretch has not been tiled and is a few inches lower than the rest of the platform. Even in the section where tiles have been laid, the flooring is uneven at certain spots.
With the population of Ambernath rising sharply over the years, a lot more commuters travel by locals each day. A decade ago, the population of the township was around 1.5 lakh, but it has risen to well over 3.5 lakhtoday.Onanaverage, onemember from each family travels by train everyday.
“The situation is so bad that everyday somebody or the other fallsdue to the uneven platforms. The gaps and unevenness has made alighting difficult and dangerous,” said S Murughan, a daily traveller.
Satyajit Burman, a regular commuter, said, “We have made several complaints to the station officials, but there’s been no action. Platform No 3 does not even have anti-skid tiles. Will the authorities wake up only after someone falls in the gap and dies or is left handicapped for life?”
Another resident, Deepak Singh, said, “The distance between the footboardandplatformvariesacrossplatform No 1 and 2. This shows that the work of raising the height of platforms was not carried out in a proper mannerandisnowcausingproblems for commuters. What’s more, these gaps are at their worst at the spots where the ladies compartment and senior citizen’s special coaches halt.”
When Mumbai Mirror contacted CR officials for their comment, they said that they will send a team to Ambernath on Wednesday and get the platforms fixed immediately.
SLIPPERY GRAB POLE
Rail commuters across the city have also been complaining about the stainless steel grab poles that were introduced in the current Siemens rakes. They say the poles are slippery and cannot be gripped easily.
Commuter Zeeshan Ansari said that the old rakes, which had painted iron poles, afforded a firm grip.
“But the stainless steel grab poles are extremely slippery and can cause someone to slip and fall if he tries catchingthetrainwhilerunning,”he said.
While Railway officials agree that the poles could be slippery, they say that these poles are strong and durable and require low maintenance.
“Using a rubber covering to improve the grip would make it a hygienic issue as sweaty palms will only cause it to emit a foul smell,” an official said. “However, some modification could be brought about,” he agreed.

CR total carelessness, dont care about passenger safety, inspite of high court order to adjust the height according to the footboard...They have money to compensate for any accident, but no time & money for safety of passengers..
Shame on the railway board..

MUMBAI: A day after a commuter in the luggage compartment of an Ambernath-bound local was injured after being shot, the Government Railway Police (GRP) officials said they have identified the four culprits and hope to arrest them soon.
Doctors at Sion hospital said Mumbra resident Tabrez Jethwa's condition is stable, and he has been moved out of ICCU and into a general ward.
On Saturday, Jethwa (23) paid the price for daring to question one amongst a group of four men for having stepped on his toes. The man shot at Jethwa, and

bullets grazed his right wrist and shoulder.
"We have got CCTV footage from the ticket booking office at Vikhroli, where the four men had bought tickets. We are in the process of using computer software to zoom into their images. We suspect they are habitual offenders and have robbery cases registered against them on railways as well as in the city limits," said senior inspector Shivaji Dhumal of the Kurla GRP.
The GRP confirmed that the accused did not have any previous enmity with Jethwa. "The firing was the result of an argument Jethwa had with them inside the compartment. The firing took place inside the running local. The men then jumped on to the railway tracks at Nahur station," an official said.
The GRP is also exploring the possibility of the men boarding the train after having committed a crime. "They probably did not want to arouse suspicion and bought tickets in case a ticket-checker came along. The presence of a weapon indicates they were preparing for a crime or had committed one," said an official.
The GRP suspects that the men live in the eastern suburbs.

tracks at Nahur station and ran towards Bhandup east, vanishing in the dark, the Kurla railway police told TOI. The four had boarded the train at Vikhroli station.
Other commuters said the fight started when Jethwa, who was sitting on the compartment’s floor, told off one of the four for stepping on his toes. “The petty fight escalated after Jethwa and the accused began to hurl abuses at each other. They assaulted Jethwa when he challenged them to fight him one at a time. The four said they would make him pay for abusing them when the train reached Nahur station,” said a railway police officer.
The police have managed to recover CCTV footage from Vikhroli and Nahur, the starting and end stations of the altercation.
“The footage has helped us identify the faces of the four accused. They were captured in the CCTVs at the Vikhroli ticket counter and Nahur station after they fired at Jethwa and ran towards Bhandup,” said senior inspector S S Dhumal of Kurla railway police.
According to witnesses, the four men had never been seen in the luggage compartment in the past.
“We suspect the four are robbers. We have got CCTV footage from a Vikhroli jewellery showroom where four robbers struck on Thursday night and fled with gold and silver ornaments worth Rs16 lakh. CCTV footage from the stations and the showroom have been compared. One of the train accused was with a shoulder bag seen in the footage from the jewellery showroom. We suspect it contained the stolen jewellery,” said an officer.
Jethwa, who works as a driver with a Bandra-based real estate builder, was returning home at 10.30pm on Friday.
Inspector Santosh Dhanvate said one of the four pulled out a country-made revolver and shot two bullets at Jethwa that grazed his right wrist and shoulder.
He is recuperating at Sion Hospital.
In his complaint, Jethwa said, “I took the 11.23pm Ambernath local from Dadar. When the train reached Vikhroli station at 11.45pm, the four boarded the middle luggage compartment. I was sitting on the floor when one of them stepped on my toes. I asked him to take off his foot but he began to hurl abuses at me. When I warned them, the four hit me and threatened that I will face the consequences for taking them on. They fired at me when the train reached Nahur station around 12.05am.”
The accused have been booked under Indian Penal Code’s sections 34 (common intention) and 307 (attempt to murder) and under the Firearms Act.
