After a delay of over two years, railway authorities are set to start the construction of the Andheri-Goregaon harbour line extension once again.
The work on the Rs 100 crore extension had reportedly been stalled for over 24 months because illegal establishments had cropped up around Jogeshwari station.
However, after the delay, Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation has set a new deadline of March 2017 for the project’s completion.

Mumbai to Pune in just 25 minutes at 1,120 kmph? Yes! This may soon become a reality through Hyperloop
Mumbai/Pune: Believe it or not but travel time between Mumbai and Pune may be cut down to 25 minutes!
Yes.
...
You read it right. As of now, Mumbai-Pune journey time is about three hours by train but Hyperloop Transportation Technologies has put forth a new proposal before transport ministry. According to this new proposal, travel time between Mumbai and Pune may be reduced to 25 minutes!
Hyperloop
Hyperloop runs faster than an aircraft at a speed of 1,120 kmph.
Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, a Los Angeles-based company, has designed a new way to move people.
Hyperloop is a concept where a pod-like vehicle travels through a near-vacuum that's contained within a tube.
The firm has asked the transport ministry for land to run a pilot project of its high-speed transportation service.
Elon Musk-backed Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) co-founder Bibop G Gresta on Tuesday said the company is ready to build hyperloop between Mumbai and Pune, but the decision is left with Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to go ahead with the project.
"Gadkari has a proposal to build the hyperloop on his table and he has to take a decision. If he wants to go ahead with it, we are ready, and it will be a feasibility study to begin with to lay line between Bombay (Mumbai) and Pune," he told media in Bengaluru on the sidelines of the Carnegie Global Technology Summit 2016.
Asked about the regulatory challenges to build hyperloop in India, Gresta said Gadkari, during the meeting, had expressed the Indian Government's willingness to help the company in this regard.
"I had asked Gadkari to help us with regulatory norms. He (Gadkari) said we are willing to do that," he added.
Among the prominent cities and countries where the hyperloop will be built are California, Utah, Illinois, Florida, Indianapolis, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Spain, France, Slovakia, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Botswana, South Africa, Russia, China, Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Australia.
Gresta said the company has received an investment of over $100 to build hyperloop in these countries and cities around the globe.
"We have received over 100 million dollars to build hyperloop in as many as 20 countries," he said. Replying to a query, Gresta said the first hyperloop is expected to be launched in Abu Dhabi.

The Congress Thursday targeted Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for awarding the Metro rail project work to a road construction company facing accusations of corruption in the Mumbai road scam.
A consortium involving the controversial firm, J Kumar Infraprojects, has won the Rs 5000-crore contract for infrastructural works in the Andheri (East) – Dahisar (East) Metro route. “The BJP came to power on the promises of clean governance. We want to know why the Metro rail works have been awarded to a blacklisted firm,” said Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant.
J Kumar is among the

six road contractors against whom the Mumbai municipality has filed an FIR for shoddy road works.
Sawant said that in the recently completed monsoon session of the state legislature, Minister of State (Urban Development) Ranjit Patil had assured the House that the government would take stern action against the contractor.
The Congress Thursday said these assurances were but ‘hogwash’. Sawant said, “On the one hand, they (the government) give out such assurances regarding action against contractors and on the other, they reward them with big contracts.”
Replying to a query in this regard during the monsoon session, the CM, who also heads the Urban Development department, had said the tenders for the Metro rail works had been floated before the FIR was filed in the roads scam. He had also pointed out that the firm was a part of an international consortium, and satisfied all qualification norms set out by Metro rail’s funding agency JICA.
But Sawant said, “The JICA might not have known about the wrongdoings of the contractor, but the Urban Development department did. The government should have waited for the inquiry into the road scam to finish before awarding the work.”
Reservation activist, NCP workers clash
Activists of an outfit championing the Dhangar community’s reservations cause were involved in a violent clash with NCP workers in Mumbai Thursday. The incident took place outside NCP’s party office near Mantralaya. The activists, who claimed to be representing the Yeshwant Sena, were holding a protest against NCP leader Madhukar Pichad. Pichad, a former Maharashtra tribal minister, had spoken out against the reservation demand Wednesday.

In a major relief to 10 lakh Harbour line commuters, all 9-car trains, from Wednesday, will run with 12 coaches. For suburban commuters travelling between Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST)-Panvel and CST-Andheri, this means a 33 per cent increase in carrying capacity.
Currently, 2,500-3,000 commuters travel in a Harbour line train during peak hours but with this augmentation, the passenger capacity would increase up to 4,000.
CR operates around 584 services on Harbour line (CST-Panvel and CST-Andheri) with 36 trains. However, there is a train with Western Railway which still has 9 cars.
“The

different composition of coaches leads to confusion among passengers while boarding the train. With this conversion, confusion about coach position comes to an end. It would be good if WR undertakes conversion of the remaining one train also,” said Narendra Patil, chief public relation officer, Central Railway.
The first 12-car Harbour line service was inducted on April 29 and since then in phased manner the services were being augmented from nine to 12 cars.
When contacted, Mukul Jain, divisional railway manager (DRM), Mumbai Central (WR) to confirm conversion of one last train owned by WR, he said, “We have requested CR to take all Harbour line operations from us. So they can take this train from us and convert it to 12-car and operate it. We are short of additional rake to convert it.”

CM wants Metro by Dec 2019, activists say work during monsoon will inconvenience Mumbaikars
With a December 2019 deadline in mind, as wished by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started work on barricading a 1-km stretch at three places along the route, right in the middle of the monsoon, though this is expected to inconvenience commuters and motorists in the western suburbs.
Called the Metro-7 corridor, this elevated line will run from Andheri (East) to Dahisar (East) along the Western Express Highway (WEH).
MMRDA
...
officials said that the majority of the alignment falls on the west side of WEH, which has been the most pothole-ridden arterial stretch in the city.
“It would have been appropriate to start the work after monsoon. Since it is Fadnavis’ vision to complete the project by December 2019, every single day is important to us. So we have started work now,” said Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Pravin Darade.
He added that the mega-project would relieve traffic congestion on the WEH as nearly 70,000 passengers were expected to travel in one direction in one hour along this route. “It is equivalent to more than 50 lanes of vehicular traffic,” Darade said.
He added that people in the far western suburbs were advised to start their day half an earlier than they usually did, during the period of the work.
He claimed that there would be no traffic diversion during the first phase of barricading at the three places but the work would affect traffic on service roads and slip roads. The MMRDA has started the work of barricading the stretches from Hub Mall to the beginning of Aarey flyover, Saibaba Temple, Pathanwadi, to Pushpa Park and Metro Mall to Devipada. The work is likely to take at least 10 to 12 days.
“After assessing the response to this phase, we will decide further barricading. The actual diversion of traffic will come into effect at a later stage. The service roads and slip roads will be used for the barricading and excavation works to minimise inconvenience to commuters. Also, we will not allow parking on such roads,” said Darade, adding, the full-fledged work would start mid-September.
The work will be carried out in two shifts but the launching of girders will be strictly carried out at night. “We will also provide additional lanes to the traffic during the peak hours. The MMRDA has agreed to provide more traffic wardens to regulate the traffic,” said Milind Bharambe, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
The BEST has agreed to provide more air-conditioned buses during the construction of the Metro-7 corridor and the Western Railway is assessing requests to run more services on the stretch.
In all, 247 residential and commercial structures to be affected by the proposed Metro stations will be rehabilitated under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) policy.
Meanwhile, two more Metro lines — D N Nagar to Mankhurd and Wadala to Thane — are likely to get the state cabinet’s approval in the next 15 days, said an MMRDA official.
Activists, meanwhile, slammed the MMRDA for starting the work in the middle of the monsoon. “The MMRDA is talking about the chief minister’s vision. Don’t we, Mumbaikars, have a vision for the city? We want pothole-free roads. If they are hurrying, it is going to inconvenience the Mumbaikars who are paying taxes. What is more important — the CM’s vision or the Mumbaikars’ comfort?” said Shyama Kulkarni of Apna Mumbai Abhiyaan, a coalition of 40 NGOs advocating an underground Metro rail line.
