For the second consecutive year, none of Mumbai’s eight busiest stations made it to the list of India’s 10 cleanest stations. Bandra station, however, managed to grab the 15th spot in the Indian Railways’ cleanliness survey.
Pune station fared better and ranked nine among the A1 category of the list released by railway minister Suresh Prabhu in New Delhi on Wednesday.
Last year, Pune ranked 75 while Bandra stood at 60.
According

to the report, Lonavala also moved up the rankings from 312 position in 2016 to 29 this year.
Eight ‘A1 and A’ stations on the Mumbai suburban network were surveyed.
The A1 category stations were CST, Dadar, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Thane, Mumbai Central, Bandra station and Kalyan.
Panvel was the only ‘A category’ station.
Mumbai Central had emerged as the cleanest among the eight stations in 2016 but this it slipped to 27 while Surat station on the Western Railway which had topped the A1 category last year, fell to 26 this time.
Among the 407 stations surveyed across the country, Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh ranked first among the A1 category stations, while Beas in Punjab topped the A category stations.
The environment and housekeeping management directorate of the Railway board has commissioned the survey under the Swatch Rail Swatch Bharat mission last year.
According to railway sources, Indian railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) outsourced the
survey to a third party agency — Quality Council of India (QCI).
“The stations were ranked according to their cleanliness in parking, main entry area, main platform and waiting rooms. The agency visited the stations to gauge their cleanliness and took into account passenger feedback,” the railway’s release stated.
It added, “A 24x7 control room was set up and images were geo-tagged to monitor progress.”
Railway sources said that among the 17 zonal railways, CR and WR ranked 3rd and 6th respectively on cleanliness.

* Amongst the major metro-cities of world as well as of India, Mumbai has the highest population density.
* No wonder, in spite of the underground sewrage network, it remains amongst the filthiest.
* Very low elevation, heavy rains, dangerous flooding, especially during the high tide only make the matter worse.
* It is very difficult to keep the Mumbai Rly
...
stations clean due to above facts and a very large footfall mainly due to large number of suburban paxs.
* Mumbai is continuously losing its status at national as well as international level due to lack of investment in its infrastructure and gradually getting more and more crowded much beyond the level of sustainability. Lack of fast and convenient mode of transport is one of the main reason, the populace is not getting disbursed enough.
* Two pronged approach required,
1- develop the adjoining areas and give faster and extended suburban rail/ metro commuting facility
2- develop the nearby cities and give fast train commuting facility (160-200 kmph) very much like Rapid Rail Transport being planned to connect nearby cities like Alwar, Meerut, Panipat, etc with Delhi.
* ----STRENGTHENING SUBURBAN RAIL/ METRO TRANSPORT----
It is necessary to develop adjoining area like Vasai, Virar and beyond, Beyond Kalyan, Navi Mumbai etc to reduce the crowding in Mumbai.
Fast tracking of following projects essential to develop these suburbs which can act as counter magnets and decongest the Mumbai
Following are som of the important additions rquired in this respect:
1- Virar-Dahanu-Quadrupling,
2- Six tracking of BCT-VR,
3- Six tracking of CSTM-Kalyan,
4- Quadrupling CSTM-Panvel harbour route
5- Tripling/Quadrupling of Kalyan-Kasara, Kalyan-Khopoli
6- New corridors like Virai-VasaiRd-Panvel-Alibaug (a planned project) etc
*------- DEVELOPING RAPID RAIL TRANSPORT TO NEARBY CITIES ----
Rapid rail transport @ 180-200 kmph shall make the cities in 200-250km range shall act as counter magnet to Mumbai Metro so that Population growth takes place in these cities and new nodes may be developed enroute to absorb the future population growth in the Mumbai Region. A combination of level tracks, elevated tracks and tunnels may be required to keep the distances and hence commuting times to lower side, to make the scheme successful.
Following could be some of the options
1- Mumbai-Pune (150km) (Future extension to Solapur 400-Secunderabad750)
2- Mumbai-Nashik(175km) (Future extension to Malegaon250-Dhule-Indore550-BPL725)
3- Mumbai-Aurangabad (250km) (Future extension to NGP750)
4- Mumbai-Ahmednagar(200km)
5- Mumbai-Vapi(150km) (Future extension to ST250-BRC400-ADI500)
Above BG RRT rail of Mumbai, and similar ones from other metro like Delhi, Kolkata, Banglore, Chennai etc can later be extended step by step, in long run, to become a unified nationwide network of SHS trains.

In a bid to save face after having to contend with two incidents wherein people drove their cars onto Andheri Station's platform No 1, the Western Railway has placed metal bollards at the western entrance of the station.
On November 25, Rajesh Yadav, a driver with a private firm, drove his car onto Andheri Station's platform No 1, at the time designated as platform number 6.
However, it was later discovered that Yadav was suffering from a medical condition that rendered him severely disoriented.
This

condition later led to Yadav having a brain haemorrhage later that night in the hospital. On February 20, cricketer Harmeet Jasbir Singh drove his Hyundai Verna car within sniffing distance of a local train on the same platform.
The incident occurred at around 7.10 am.
The railways has also placed bollards at Mahim station, and has started plugging gaps in the walls at other stations because the railways finds itself at the centre of what security officials are calling a concerted effort by undesirable elements to sabotage railway operations.
As mentioned earlier by DNA, the railways nationwide faced 40 cases of sabotage between January and February 2017 as compared to 46 cases in 2016.

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Friday continued its interim stay on the cutting of trees for the Metro III project.
A division bench of Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice Girish Kulkarni also allowed the petitioners, who have challenged the permission to cut trees, to inspect documents of the BMC and the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL).
The judges emphasized that there was a fine balance between development and the toll on the environment. "Development cannot happen without some hardships, but we will have to check whether it is a hardship

or if it is a massacre (of trees)," remarked the Chief Justice.
The judge reiterated the importance of trees and expressed concern over the fast-depleting green cover. "For human existence trees are necessary. They are important for the future generations," said the judge, adding, "Looking to the situation, if I visit the city in 20 years I will not find green cover, only brown (referring to concrete structures)."
The HC had earlier this month asked MMRCL to place on record information regarding survey made before it proceeded with cutting of over 5,000 trees for the Metro III line between Seepz, Andheri and Colaba. The court is hearing two petitions, one by Pervin Jehangir (65) challenging the legality of the Metro construction and another by Nina Verma (76) against the hacking of trees in Churchgate, Hutatma Chowk and Cuffe Parade. The court had earlier stayed the cutting of trees.
In an affidavit, Jitendra Pardeshi, tree officer and superintendent of gardens, BMC, informed the HC that of the 132 trees in Hutatma Chowk, the Tree Authority had granted permission for the felling of 45 trees and transplantation of 76 trees. Only 11 of the existing trees was to be retained. The Tree Authority had set a condition for MMRCL that once the work on the Hutatma Chowk Metro station was completed it would have to plant around 135 trees. The authority also admitted that it had found that some discrepancies in the measurements pointed out by the petitioners was found to be correct. The BMC would seek an explanation for the discrepancies, added the affidavit.

After a delay of over two years, railway authorities are set to start the construction of the Andheri-Goregaon harbour line extension once again.
The work on the Rs 100 crore extension had reportedly been stalled for over 24 months because illegal establishments had cropped up around Jogeshwari station.
However, after the delay, Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation has set a new deadline of March 2017 for the project’s completion.

Mumbai to Pune in just 25 minutes at 1,120 kmph? Yes! This may soon become a reality through Hyperloop
Mumbai/Pune: Believe it or not but travel time between Mumbai and Pune may be cut down to 25 minutes!
Yes.
...
You read it right. As of now, Mumbai-Pune journey time is about three hours by train but Hyperloop Transportation Technologies has put forth a new proposal before transport ministry. According to this new proposal, travel time between Mumbai and Pune may be reduced to 25 minutes!
Hyperloop
Hyperloop runs faster than an aircraft at a speed of 1,120 kmph.
Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, a Los Angeles-based company, has designed a new way to move people.
Hyperloop is a concept where a pod-like vehicle travels through a near-vacuum that's contained within a tube.
The firm has asked the transport ministry for land to run a pilot project of its high-speed transportation service.
Elon Musk-backed Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT) co-founder Bibop G Gresta on Tuesday said the company is ready to build hyperloop between Mumbai and Pune, but the decision is left with Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari to go ahead with the project.
"Gadkari has a proposal to build the hyperloop on his table and he has to take a decision. If he wants to go ahead with it, we are ready, and it will be a feasibility study to begin with to lay line between Bombay (Mumbai) and Pune," he told media in Bengaluru on the sidelines of the Carnegie Global Technology Summit 2016.
Asked about the regulatory challenges to build hyperloop in India, Gresta said Gadkari, during the meeting, had expressed the Indian Government's willingness to help the company in this regard.
"I had asked Gadkari to help us with regulatory norms. He (Gadkari) said we are willing to do that," he added.
Among the prominent cities and countries where the hyperloop will be built are California, Utah, Illinois, Florida, Indianapolis, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Spain, France, Slovakia, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Botswana, South Africa, Russia, China, Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Australia.
Gresta said the company has received an investment of over $100 to build hyperloop in these countries and cities around the globe.
"We have received over 100 million dollars to build hyperloop in as many as 20 countries," he said. Replying to a query, Gresta said the first hyperloop is expected to be launched in Abu Dhabi.
