With each access point covering up to 40 metres, all platforms, passenger concourse and entrance of the stations are covered, according to South Western Railway’s chief public relations officer E. Vijaya.
In 2017–18, the Railways would provide the facility at Vijayapura, Ballari, Dharwad, Hosapete, and Vasco da Gama (Goa) stations in Hubballi division; Bengaluru Cantonment (to be commissioned shortly), Bangarpet, Kengeri, Krishnarajapuram, and Sri Satya Sai Prasanti Nilayam stations in Bengaluru division; Davangere and Shivamogga Town in Mysuru division, and Mangaluru Junction station in Palakkad division of Southern Railway.
Seventeen more stations would be covered in the next financial year. They are Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Londa, and Toranagallu in Hubballi division; Banaswadi, Hindupur, Hosur, Mandya, Tumakuru, and Yelahanka in Bengaluru division, and Arsikere, Birur, Bhadravathi, Harihar, Haveri and Hassan in Mysuru division.
One can get Internet access with speeds up to 1 Mbps for upload and 3 Mbps for download for the first 30 minutes. Subsequently, the speed reduces to 64 Kbps, but, one could access railway-related sites through WiFi for information such as PNR, and train inquiry, throughout the day.

BENGALURU: Taking a major step towards monetising railway assets and upgrading passenger amenities, Indian Railways on Wednesday invited tenders for development of vacant railway land in the vicinity of 23 railway stations. This includes Bangalore Cantonment and Yeshwantpur in Bangalore Railway Division.
Briefing newspersons at the Divisional Railway Manager’s office before Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the ‘Station Redevelopment Programme’ (announced in this year’s Railway budget) from New Delhi through video link, General Manager of South Western Railway, A K Gupta, said a total of 22.5 acres in Bengaluru will be offered for private development.
“This

will include 20 acres located 4 km from Yeshwantpur station and 2.25 acres near Cantonment station, located along Thimmaiah Road connecting Queen’s Road,” he said.
Tenders were floated for commercial development of these places on Wednesday and the last date for accepting bids is June 1. The Swiss Challenge Method, which is more transparent than the regular tendering process, has been adopted.

“The bidder can have any commercial venture in railway land, which will be offered on a 45-year lease. Simultaneously, the two stations need to be provided with all conceivable passenger amenities and facilities so that they become iconic ventures,” he added.
Fifteen more stations in South Western Railway will be developed. These include Belagavi, Ballari, Vijayapura, Davangere, Dharwad, Hosapete, Hubballi, Krishnarajapuram, Shivamogga, Sai Prashanti Nilayam, Vasco Da Gama, Bangarpet and Bengaluru city (Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna) stations, Gupta said.
In the second phase, bids for redevelopment of 100 stations will be put out in June. In the third and final phase in December, 250-plus stations will be covered.
Suresh Prabhu, in a speech telecast live across many railway divisions, said that the space near railway stations falls under the “most valuable real estate in the country.”
“The entire Stations Redevelopment Programme was targeting `1 lakh crore to be obtained by monetising 2,200 acres of land across 100 cities across the country,” he said. Altogether 400-plus A1 and A stations would be developed.

Under public pressure to start a suburban train service in Bengaluru, the South Western Railway (SWR) is likely to introduce new trains on two existing lines that connect the city centre with the suburbs.
More trains could run from Bengaluru City to Bangarpet (via Whitefield) and Ramanagaram, given the feasibility to operate the services on the two lines. The two lines have been listed under Phase A, Stage 1, of the Bengaluru suburban railway project, whose detailed project report (DPR) was prepared by RITES, a Central government-owned engineering consultancy.
“After several rounds of
...

discussion with the railways, it has been decided to introduce new trains on these lines on priority. This can be done faster using the existing infrastructure.
It’s also possible to add more trains on the Yeshwantpur-Tumakuru railway line,” a state government official, who oversees the city’s suburban project, told DH.
Phase A, Stage 1, entails introduction of seven new services or replacement of 15 existing conventional trains with Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains. This will cost Rs 360 crore and needs the approval of the state Cabinet, he noted.
“Once the state government agrees to fund the project, it will take six to eight months to procure a rake (a group of coaches) and complete the signalling work. The electric-powered trains have engines and can move in both directions without having to take a turn like conventional trains,” the official said.
An extensive suburban train project for Bengaluru has been proposed to be spread over three stages and estimated to cost Rs 9,000 crore. It involves commuter train services from Bengaluru City to Hosur (41 km), Doddaballapur (37 km), Ramanagaram (46 km), Tumakuru (64 km), Chikkaballapur (57 km), Bangarpet (84 km) and Nelamangala (27 km).
According to K N Krishna Prasad of Karnataka Railway Vedike, all lines except the Lottegollahalli-Hosur stretch (via Hebbal and Banaswadi) are doubled and electrified, which makes it easy to introduce the suburban train services.
Urban mobility analyst Sanjeev Dyamannavar, however, said more commuter trains on the two routes would be of little help unless the railways prioritised them over outbound services. “Besides conventional passenger trains, the city has three MEMU and DEMU trains each. It would be difficult for people to switch to commuter services unless the SWR increases their frequency,” he added.

Volunteers of Citizens for Bengaluru (CfB) will carry out a ‘Chuku Buku Railu Beku’ awareness campaign on December 17, demanding a commuter train network for the city.
They will board the 9 am train to Bangarpet at the Bengaluru City railway station. The train stops at Bengaluru Cantonment, Bengaluru East, Baiyappanahalli, KR Puram, Hoody and Whitefield stations, Srinivas Alavilli, member, CfB, told reporters on Friday. Many college students and noted musician Raghu Dixit will take part, he added.
Bengaluru has around 40 railway stations and 140 km of tracks that should be adequately

used by the government. Not many people, including government officials, are aware of the network’s potential, said a CfB volunteer.
Actor Prakash Belawadi said the proposal to build a commuter rail network in Bengaluru was first mooted 32 years ago but nothing came out of it. He said suburban trains could substantially reduce private vehicles and bring down pollution. Instead of constructing a steel flyover at a cost of Rs 1,800 crore, the government can spend the amount on building a commuter train network in Bengaluru, he added.
K N Krishna Prasad, convener of Bengaluru Suburban Rail Passengers’ Forum, said Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune all had suburban rail systems. In Mumbai, around 75 lakh people depend on the suburban rail for their daily commute. According to him, building a suburban train network would not cost much. By spending just Rs 300 crore, the suburban rail system can be introduced in Bengaluru in six months, he suggested.
In the evening, CfB volunteers organised a freeze mob demonstration to promote the suburban rail network option and gather votes against the steel flyover project. For nearly half an hour, 20 volunteers became statues at various locations on MG Road to explain to people the need for a commuter rail network and invite them to the awareness campaign on December 17.

For many, the rail bus conjures no images at all, because few even knew it existed. And now it's being relegated to memory.
The rail bus plied its trade between Kolar and Bangarpet, or at least did so until Saturday, when it made its last journey. What makes it even more poignant is that the Kolar-Bangarpet rail bus was the last of its kind in India (though there are talks to renew the rail bus facility between Mathura and Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh).
But what is a rail bus you may ask. A rail

bus is a one-bogie bus that runs on railway tracks. It can accommodate around 60 to 70 passengers at a time. A rail bus is a lightweight passenger rail vehicle (typically non-articulated or of rigid frame) that shares many aspects of its construction with a bus, In fact it usually has a bus -or modified bus -body and four wheels on a fixed base, instead of attached to bogies.
Rail buses, a design developed in the 1930s, eventually got larger, more powerful and its characteristics came to resemble a light railcar. Rail buses were designed for use specifically on little-used railway lines and were common in countries like Germany, Italy, France, the United Kingdom and Sweden. Rail buses across the world are being replaced by modern light DMU railcars. In Karnataka, the rail bus, man ufactured by BEML, ran between Bangarpet and Kolar. As Bangarpet was connected to the BengaluruJolarpettai line, many commuters travelling from Bengaluru to Kolar would disembark at Bangarpet. For the benefit of these passengers, the rail bus operated between Bangarpet and Kolar, so commuters could easily reach Kolar from Bangarpet railway station and vice versa. Around 50 to 60 passengers used the facility every day.
On Saturday the rail bus made its final trip, leaving Kolar at 5.20pm and heading to Bangarpet, 17 kilometres away. South Western Railways said the rail bus was no longer needed as an eightbogie train currently connected the two places.
Many fans of the rail bus, however, turned up at Kolar to bid it adieu and catch one last glimpse of history. “I was very attached to the rail bus. I took it on my way home every evening,“ said one commuter.
Another commuter, Anand Kumar, said, “Why should rail buses be stopped. I feel that rail buses have great tourist importance.“

Just a small correction. The Kolar Bangarpet railbus is not the last of it's kind. A BG rail bus service is still operating in the Kakinada Kotipalli route (~50km) in Andhra Pradesh.

The journey of the state's only operational railbus, which plied between Kolar and Bangarpet, came to an end on Saturday . Built by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), it boasted 72 seats and was among the last few railbuses operating across the country . It will now be replaced by an eight-bogie diesel electric multiple unit (DEMU), which will commence its operations on Monday . The locomotive was introduced in 1997, when the railway track in Kolar was upgraded from narrow gauge to broad gauge. The railbus became hugely popular among commuters, travelling between Bengaluru and Kolar. Passengers travelling to Kolar generally boarded an express train to Bangarpet Station, before switching to the railbus that ferried them to Kolar, 18km away . Moreover, Kolar-based passengers travelling to Chennai and Tirupati among other places, often took the railbus to Bangarpet, where they subsequently boarded their trains. However, it was not just oneway...

Mohammed Ismail SEE ALL COMMENTSADD COMMENT Kolar's tryst with railways dates back to 1913, when a narrow gauge line was laid here. For nearly six decades, the nar row gauge line served the purposes of the people of Kolar before the Indian railways decided to stop services to the district in the 1970s. Protesting against the move, a people's movement under the leadership of Vatal Nagraj was launched, demanding resumption of train services in the district. Rail car services were subsequently introduced in the early 80s, and the railways subsequently took up the conversion of the narrow gauge, in accordance with the Unigauge policy , paving the way for the railbus operations in 1997. Manager of the Kolar branch of Karnataka State Financial Corporation, KV Rukmangadha, who used the railbus for seven years to board a train to Bengaluru from Bangarpet, recalled the mad rush among commuters to board the vehicle. "There were times when I travelled standing on the railbus. It proved very useful for many commuters, who travelled comfortably on the 72-seat vehicle," he said. The station master at Kolar railway station, Ambarish said that the 1996-manufactured railbus often needed repairs. survey was conducted across major railway stations. Launched under the ‘Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ with the objective of measuring passengers satisfaction with cleanliness at the station premises, the survey covered 407 major railway stations across the country – 75 A1 category stations and 332 A category stations.
The primary audience for the survey was passengers. During the survey, feedback was also gathered from railway officials, porters and vendors at each station who were part of the service improvement group and licensed porters and vendors in the station premises.
The objective of the study was to evaluate various cleanliness indices in the passenger interface areas of railway station as well as the mechanism in use and identify the satisfaction levels / shortcoming. Initially 47 parameters were framed, of which 22 were pertaining to infrastructure and enabling provisions; 10 pertaining to processes and methodology and 15 on the outcome of upkeep and cleanliness.
In addition to achievements mentioned above, SWR has figured prominently in the most clean medium stations (Bangarpet), major stations (Yesvantpur & Bengaluru) and divisional Head quarters (Mysuru) also.In terms of percentage of clean Stations, SWR has bagged second place with 47% of stations being in top levels of cleanliness. As the survey has been conducted across Indian Railways, the distinctions achieved by SWR speaks volumes of the efforts of SWR in implementing Swachch Rail, Swachch Bharath initiative of Central Government.SWR will continue to strive towards ensuring cleanliness stations with help from passengers.
