A goods wagon derailed at Sirivagilu near Edakumari in Sakaleshpur taluk on Wednesday, forcing the South Western Railways to stop Yeshwanthpur-Karwar Express (16515) train at Hassan Railway Station. The passengers, who had planned their trips Mangaluru, Karwar and Subramanya, had a difficult time.
The goods train heading to Bengaluru from Mangaluru derailed around 11.15 a.m. According to senior officials of the South Western Railway, one wagon derailed near Sirivagilu, amidst the Western Ghats. There were no reports of casualty. The rescue team was rushed to the spot. The track would be restored by late evening, SWR officials said.

Yashwanthpur-Karwar Express was stopped at Hassan station around 11.45 a.m. The passengers were told either seek refund of their ticket or wait until the track was restored.
While many took the refund and looked for buses to reach their destination, a few stayed in the railway station. Ravi Kumar, a Tumakuru resident, was accompanying his family to Subramanya. “Fifteen members of our family had planned the trip by train to enjoy the greenery in the Western Ghats. It is now difficult to make alternative arrangements to reach our destination,” he said.
Similar was the situation of Ramesh, a resident of Bengaluru. He was travelling with his family members to attend a wedding in Dharmasthala. He said that the SWR should compensate the loss caused to the passengers. “They return the ticket amount (partially)... but that will not compensate the hardship caused to the passengers," he said.

Union minister for railways Suresh Prabhu said that double-tracking of the Konkan Railway (KR) route will commence from October 31
On the occasion of 25th anniversary of Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Thursday announced that work on the doubling of the 740-km long track will commence from October 31, 2015.
Emphasizing on the importance of both doubling and electrification, Prabhu further said that it will increase traffic volume and generate 50% more profit with additional turnover of around Rs 100-200 crore every year. This will also increase the

cargo handling capacity to 1.5 billion tonnes from present 1 billion tonnes, Prabhu added.
He further stressed on the importance of port connectivity and also aimed at making Konkan railway far better in next 25 years than what it is today.
“The next biggest investments in railways anywhere in the world would be in India, as countries like Japan, Europe and USA already have developed rail infrastructure. Hence Konkan railway too can benefit from it,” Prabhu said while addressing Konkan Railway’s silver jubilee function at Vashi in Navi Mumbai.
Apart from doubling and electrification of Konkan railway, the corporation has also introduced various commuter friendly services at select stations including computerized reservation centers (PRS), ATM, Janasadharan ticket booking sevak (JTBS), town booking agency, bio-toilets, CCTV surveillance, Wi-Fi services and many more.

The Diesel Electrical Multiple Unit (DEMU) between Madgaon and Mangalore Central received rousing welcome throughout the route on the first day of its run even as more than 400 passengers made use of the facility. The Udupi Rail Yatri Sangha garlanded the train on its arrival from Madgaon and put a welcome banner on the train.
Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd., (KRCL) extended the services of the DEMU that earlier ran between Bhatkal and Mangalore Central, up to Madgaon responding to public demand for a morning train from Madgaon towards Mangalore, a KRCL spokesperson said. The train leaves Madgaon at 5 a.m. to reach Mangalore Central at 12.05 p.m. and on the return direction, it leaves Mangalore Central at 2.55 p.m. to reach

Madgaon at 10.30 p.m.
Though only about 62 passengers travelled towards Mangalore in the morning, it was attributed to the running of Karwar-Yeshwantpur tri-weekly express just 10 minutes before the DEMU. On the return journey, more than 350 passengers boarded the train from Mangalore towards various destinations.
KRCL has deployed a suburban DEMU with eight coaches that can seat 600 passengers on this route. The coaches have toilet and water facility unlike regular DEMUs. Wide doors and wider passage area allow more passengers to travel standing. Sufficient numbers of hanging belts are provided in the coaches unlike regular passenger trains even as the seats are comfortable, the spokesperson said.
While the travel time between Mangalore Central and Madgaon is about seven hours, less than about nine hours taken by bus, the fare is just Rs. 80 against Rs. 330 by bus. On the first day, the DEMU arrived 22 minutes late (12.27 p.m.) at Mangalore and on the return, it was on-time till Udupi (4.46 p.m.), up to which information was available on www.indiarailinfo.com.
The spokesperson hoped that more people would travel by the DEMU in the coming days.
Function in Udupi
The train received a rapturous welcome at the Udupi Railway Station too.
The extension of this train was a persistent demand of the Udupi Railway Yatri Sangha. As the Madgaon Junction – Mangalore Central DEMU arrived at the first platform, members of the sangha cheered and welcomed it.
Members of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party were present. The train, which was scheduled to arrive at 10.10 a.m., arrived 35 minutes late. The members of the sangha also garlanded the engine and the engine driver on the occasion.
R.L. Dias, president of the sangha, told presspersons that though the train had eight compartments, it was carrying only 50 passengers instead of 500.
The sangha was concerned that the lack of passengers would lead to its cancellation. Hence a delegation met Bindu Muralidharan, Regional Railway Manager, KRCLat Karwar, and requested her to extend the DEMU to Karwar. But she had not agreed to this suggestion, but also extended the DEMU further to Madgaon.
