BENGALURU: The Basava Express (Mysuru to Bagalkot) suffered an engine failure around 4 pm on Friday when running between Bidadi and Hejjala railway stations. Nearly 800 passengers on board had to stay put inside the train for 40 minutes after the train ground to a halt.
Speaking to Express, a top railway official said, “Barring the delay suffered by passengers, there was no other problem. The loco could not haul the train and so stopped mid-section.”
A repair vehicle was dispatched with a new engine and the train continued after a 40-minute delay.

The train had departed from Mysuru railway station at 1.30 pm had crossed Bidadi by 3.50 pm. It was then heading towards Hejjala. “At some point mid-way, the engine could not pull the train and the loco-pilot brought the train to a halt and alerted officials at the Hejjala station. A relief train from there replaced the loco and the train continued its journey.”
The loco with problems has been sent to the Hubballi yard to ascertain the reasons for the failure.

The bi-weekly express has been provided with metallic Braille signages inside the coaches indicating berth numbers, location of alarm pull chains, toilets and emergency windows
The Mysuru-Varanasi Express is set to become the country’s first visually-challenged friendly train when it chugs off from the city on Tuesday.
The bi-weekly express Train Number 16229/16230 which leaves Mysuru for Varanasi on Tuesdays and Thursdays, has been provided with metallic Braille signages inside the coaches indicating the berth numbers, location of alarm pull chains, toilets and emergency windows. The Braille signage also has instructions on the

operation of emergency exit windows for the use of visually challenged in times of any exigency. The initiative was financed by Pratap Simha, Mysuru MP, from the MPLAD Fund. Mr. Simha inaugurated and inaugurated by him on Monday.
Though the Puri-Delhi Purushottam Express was the first train in the country to have a Braille-embedded coach, the Mysuru-Varanasi Express is the first train in the country where all reserved coaches have been embedded with Braille signage, said Rajkumar Lal, Divisional Railway Manager, Mysuru division of the South Western Railways.
“The plan is to extend the facility to all the reserved coaches of long-distance trains in a phase-wise manner,” he added. Braille signage has been introduced on one rake of the Mysuru-Varanasi Express and the facility will be provided for the second rake of the same train as well. The Chamundi Express and the Mysuru-Talguppa Express are other two trains that will be provided with Braille signages after this, said Mr.Lal.
The Mysuru Division, which operates 118 trains, has plans for such signages for all long-distance and express trains.
Ms. Netravati, a visually-impaired person, welcomed the initiative and said that it will help them identify the seats or berths without seeking help from others. “We will be more independent and at times people do not respond properly as they to tend to be in a hurry to locate their berths,” said Netravati.
However, the coach numbers have conventional signage and the plan is to affix Braille signage for the coaches as well, said officials.

MEMU trains can be run once work on maintenance shed at Banaswadi is completed
The commute for workers who travel between Bangalore City railway station and nearby towns every day is likely to become easier in the coming months with the completion of a maintenance shed that will enable South Western Railways to introduce more electric trains.
Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains to Ramanagaram will benefit thousands of workers who travel every day between the two stations.
Currently,

passengers are forced to use trains headed to Mysuru for their daily commute. But diesel locomotives are not adapted to travelling shorter distances where MEMU trains have an advantage because of faster acceleration and turnaround times.
The project, which would help South Western Railways, to run more MEMU trains as suburban services, is likely to be completed next month.
The project, tenders for which were called in 2014, had stalled midway for a few months before work resumed again.
The shed for MEMU trains at Banaswadi railway station was announced along with three MEMU services to Ramanagaram. The construction of the maintenance shed will allow the Railways to improve the turnaround time for MEMU trains from weekly maintenance runs and would also allow for increased capacity. The shed, which will have an extra loop line, was incomplete even when the civil works and track laying had been completed.
However, electrical and overhead electrical work had been delayed which pushed the project beyond its completion dates.
“We have faced some delay with the completion of the project but the work has resumed. We hope to complete the shed by November,” said a senior official with South Western Railways.
The shed, once operational, can also help SWR operate more MEMU services to other suburban centres where electrification of lines has been carried out.
Currently, there is a MEMU service between Bengaluru and Marikuppam which has to be serviced outside the city every week which takes away one day of possible operations.

There are plans to increase the speed of trains operating on Mysuru-Bengaluru section owing to likely completion of the track doubling work between the two cities.Sources in the South Western Railway SWR told UNI that almost 90 per cent of the track-laying work on the section was completed, and this had augmented the line capacity for operating more services, besides speeding up the existing trains. Some of the trains could be speeded up to reduce the running time by 20 to 25 In view of the ongoing doubling works, there are too many speed restrictions along certain stretches and there are plans to lift them so that the running time of the trains is reduced. The locomotive pilots are issued Caution Drive (CD) slips before each departure, mentioning the stretches along which, speed restrictions are to be observed. There are as many as 15 CD stretches along the Mysuru-Bengaluru section and...
some of them are as long as 500 meters, where the train speed is limited to 15 kmph or 20 kmph and it will be lifted before this year. This alone will help gain about 20 minutes, while increasing the speed will help further reduce the commuting time, said Mr Rajkumar Lal, Divisional Railway Manager. Mr Lal said, at present, some of the trains take up to three hours to cover the distance, while a few express trains take around 2 hours and 30 minutes to cover the 139-km stretch between the two cities. If speed was to be increased, then commuting between Mysuru and Bengaluru in express trains could be covered in two hours by most trains on a conservative estimate, he reasoned. The official said there are also plans to introduce additional train services on the section and a proposal had already been submitted for running a new train departing from Bengaluru at around 1915 hrs, for which, there is a high demand from the public. From Mysuru, there are demands for operating additional services between 1100 hrs and and 1400 hrs, as during that time there are insufficient outbound trains to Bengaluru. He said, now 25 pairs of trains operate between Mysuru and Bengaluru, including four weekly, three bi-weekly and one train for six days a week. Of these, 18 trains are express and seven are passenger services. The need for a second railway terminal for Mysuru stemmed from the imperatives of operating additional services from the city to the rest of the country to enhance connectivity, he added.Mr Lal said the introduction of additional trains from Mysuru also hinges on infrastructure for maintenance of rakes. The primary maintenance are carried out at the pit-lines and the Mysuru station, which has three pit-lines, was entrusted with the task of primary maintenance of seven-pair of trains, each lasting about six to eight hours, he said, adding, two of the pit -lines can accommodate rakes of 24 coaches and the third can berth a 21-coach rake.
He said, in addition, certain trains have secondary maintenance, which takes about three hours, and hence all the three pit-lines in the city station are always occupied by rakes. The primary maintenance of rakes in the Mysuru Division takes place at Mysuru and Ariskere Junction, he noted. Mr Lal said, unless additional pit-lines are created at Belagola, it will reduce the number of trains that can be operated from Mysuru. Hence, it is imperative to develop the station as the second terminal for the city, he added.UNI BSP KVV RSS 1240

MYSURU:People travelling between Mysuru and Bengaluru are facing severe hardship due to the less number of trains running during peak hours.
Compartments of the existing trains, especially the Chamundi Express, are packed and people vie for space even in the aisle of the trains. Some even cling to the doors precariously.
While the plight of women and children is more serious, the worst affected are the senior citizens.
Elderly

women, unable to stand for hours, are forced to sit on the floor between seats or in the vestibule connecting two compartments. Reaching the nearest toilet becomes a huge task as the way to it is crammed with passengers.
Residents of Mandya, Maddur and Ramanagaram are heavily dependent on this train. Quite a large number of labourers, teachers, workers, and officials, who are daily commuters, struggle to hold on.
Three trains depart from Mysuru in the morning: Karwar-Bengaluru Express — 5.30 am, passenger train — 5.50 am and Chamundi Express — 6.45 am. Commuters take these trains to work. Chamundi Express reaches Bengaluru at 9.40 am, just in time for the office-goers.
Similarly, the evening trains towards Mysuru from Bengaluru are Tippu Express — 3 pm, Mysuru-Chamarajanagar — 3.30 pm and Chamundi Express — 6.15 pm.
The Mysuru-Chamarajanagar train, which used to leave at 4.30 pm has now been advanced to 3.30 pm. After this, there are no trains till 6.15 pm, which is the designated time for Chamundi Express.
Women who work in garment factories in various locations, reach the railway station around 4.30 pm can be seen biding time on the platform for the Bengaluru train.
Chamundi Express can seat 108 people, but at least 250 people travel in it. Even those with reservations cannot sit without sharing their seats, passengers complain.
“The shortage of trains is causing a lot of hardship. There is a need to introduce a train during the peak hours — from 6.30 am to 7.30 am — so that Chamundi is less crowded. Railway officials have failed to address the problems of passengers,” said Nethravathi, a native of Bidadi, who works in Bengaluru.
Mysore Grahakara Parishad president Chandra Prakash said, “Till work on doubling the track is not completed, extra trains have to be introduced during peak hours. To reduce congestion in Mysuru City Railway Station, steps should be taken to halt the train at Naguvanahalli, so that residents of nearby areas can alight while another stop can be provided at Ashokapuram.”
DRM Rajukar Lal said more trains will be introduced after doubling of the track. “We are planning to augment some trains with additional bogies,” he said

Mysuru, May 15- Doubling of Bengaluru-Mysuru Railway Track will be completed as soon as possible, said South Western Railway (Mysuru Division) DRM Rajkumar Lal in city this morning.
Addressing press persons at his office, he said that the works related to the doubling of railway track between Bengaluru and Mysuru was hampered owing to the shifting of Tipu Sultan’s Armoury in Srirangapatna.
He added that works related to shifting of the armoury had been entrusted to a US based company which was working on the project and soon would be completed.

Rajkumar Lal also added that the project had also been delayed due to delay in acquiring lands between Mysuru and Bengaluru and also because of the protests which had hindered the process of shifting the armoury.
However, he expressed his confidence of the problems being solved by this year’s August and completing the doubling works as early as possible.
Further, speaking about development projects at the City Railway Station, Rajkumar Lal said that the construction of Subways from Platform 1-8 would be taken up at the City Railway Station to benefit the specially-abled and senior citizens. He added that the works on installation of escalators at the City Railway Station which had been delayed over the past three years would be completed by end of this year. Rajkumar said that the project had been delayed owing to issues related to procurement at the Central Government level.
MP Pratap Simha releases Rs. 9 lakh
SWR Mysuru Division DRM Rajkumar Lal during the press meet said that Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha had released Rs. 9 lakh from the MP fund for providing amenities to passengers at the City Railway Station.
He added that the fund had been released as per the desire of PM Modi who had expressed that MPs must release some amount from their fund to the railways.
This apart, he also said that two lifts would be installed at City Railway Station and one at the K.R. Nagar Railway Station.
Rajkumar said that the works on installation of chairs and other seating arrangements would be completed by June 15.
Another doubling work
Rajkumar Lal said that the Central Government had made provisions in this year’s Railway Budget for taking up doubling works between Tumakuru – Arasikere and Chikkajajur (Chitradurga) - Hubli. He added the process of doubling works will be taken up as soon as possible.
13.5 percent revenue growth
Division Railway Manager Rajkumar Lal said that the revenue of South Western Railway had increased by 13.5 percent in the previous financial year. He added that the SWR had earned good revenue in transportation of goods, parcel and ferrying passengers.
Security at City Railway Station
Stating that the City Railway Station had been brought under Integrated Security System (ISS), Rajkumar Lal said that an additional of 16 CCTV cameras has been installed at the Railway Station increasing the number of cameras to 36 and added that Under Vehicle Scanning System (UVSC) to scan the under gear of road vehicles was ready for commissioning.
All India Helpline
The Ministry of Railway has opened an all India Helpline number 138 from Feb. 26, 2015 for passengers to register complaints related to medical emergency, cleanliness, food and catering, coach maintenance, linen and others, said SWR DRM Rajkumar Lal.
SWR Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Anil Kumar was also present in the press meet.

MYSURU: Due to non-availability of trains during peak hours in the evening between Bengaluru and Mysuru, members of the Mysore Grahakara Parishat are mounting pressure on elected representatives as well as railway authorities with a postcard campaign here on Monday.
Since the introduction of a train from Chamarajanagar to Bengaluru, the passenger train at 4.30pm was rescheduled to 3.30pm. Between 3.30pm and 6.15pm, there is no train to Mysuru. As a result, the 6.15pm is crowded. To tackle this problem, the Mysore Grahakara Parishat wrote to railway officials and elected representatives to introduce an additional train from Bengaluru to Mysuru at 5pm or 5.30pm, but received no response.

bring the issue to the attention of the Mysuru MP Mysuru Pratap Simha, the MGP launched a postcard campaign. Commuters, especially daily passengers, are put to a lot of inconvenience. The Chamundi Express train has 18 compartments and each compartment has room for 108 persons but due to the heavy rush, about 180 persons travel in it. Despite paying the reservation charge, a passenger ends up sitting uncomfortably. The authorities haven't done anything to solve this problem.
S Yogendra of the MGP said "The postcard campaign started on Monday and will go on till the authorities introduce a train between Bengaluru and Mysuru during peak hours i.e. 4pm to 6pm. We'll speak to passengers of the Chamundi Express and after getting their feedback and signatures, we'll send the postcards to Pratap Simha's office."
R Vinod, a private sector employee in Bengaluru, said, "The railway authorities, including the Union railway minister, only give speeches that their priority is passenger comfort but in reality, they don't provide it. Passengers without reservation easily get into the reserved compartment and no one bothers to stop them. The issue can be solved if the railway authorities introduce an additional train and this will help reduce the overcrowding in the Chamundi Express."
Anup Dayanand Sadhu, senior divisional commercial manager, Bengaluru division, South Western Railway, said, "As of now, there's no proposal for an additional train from Bengaluru to Mysuru. The line is too busy. Also, between 3.30pm and 6pm, we don't have trains from the opposite direction. The double line may be completed in June or July and once that's done, we can provide more trains to Mysuru."
