From decongestant roads to reducing vehicular pollution and many other benefits, the RO-RO service is a valuable and much needed addition to our transportation system.
The roll-on-roll-off service for trucks is expected to decongest traffic in Navi Mumbai, Thane, Ghodbundar Road, Bhivandi, Vasai and reduce the pollution.
Indian Railways on 5 January carried out a unique RO-RO service between Pen to Boisar via Vasai Road. The first trial run was successfully carried out between these two stations.
RO-RO

stands for roll-on/roll-off. It is highway system and also called piggyback transportation.
The RO-RO service has been in the operation in India and around the world. The Konkan Railway had first started the RO-RO services in India between Kolad to Surathkal in Karnataka in 1999 where trucks were loaded onto the bogeys using a ramp and elevator. These trucks and trailers were then ferried to the nearest port. With this service system in 2014-15, Konkan Railway is benefitted 47.4 crore, and in 2015-16- 53.3 crore.
At present, at least 500 such trucks ferry goods from JNPT port to Vasai and further north side of country.
The RO-RO service was a demand from the residents of Thane to decongest several roads in the vicinity. The Thane-Belapur road which connects Thane and Navi Mumbai is crucial link road between the port and the northern fringes of the city. It also acts as a link to Pune-Bengaluru highway down south and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in the north. RO-RO service is expected to decongest these corridors by taking trucks off this road which in addition will reduce the vehicular pollution. A RO-Ro service rake can carry 40-50 trucks and help save approximately 10 litres of diesel per kilometres.

Success of MUM-AHM HST depends on many factors, some are with in the control of IR/Govt and many are out of control.
.
Govt/IR need to manage it in a better way and try to replicate the Japanese Shinkanshen Model which is financially performing best among all the HSTs including the rich European countries like France, Germany, Italy, Spain, GB etc.
.
Indian
...
conditions are similar to Japanese conditions i.e. very high traffic potential, The major factor which have to be managed is to keep the prices as low as possible so that a substantial fraction of Middle class, upper middle class can afford it.
.
Economic performance of India in next 8 years is the most crucial factor, if GDP/per capita income increase at fast rate, and benefits passed on to all classes (not just the riches), the paying power of public shall be high enough to avail the HST trains.
.
But the current trend in Indian economy, where state govts & central govts are competing to give almost all kind of subsidies/ privileges to strengthen their vote banks does not gel well for the future of Bullet trains. A major portion of subsidies are syphoned off and give rise to black money. Instead subsidies should be provided to manpower intensive industries so that people get employment and become financially strong.
.
Delhi Mumbai Industrial corridor under implementation is expected to bring in much needed development along the MUM-AHM HST route and a good stream of paxs is expected after some years of operation of HST.

INDIAN Railways (IR) carried out an initial trial run with a piggyback train between Vasar Road and Boisar in Maharashtra state on January 5 as a precursor to a proposed roll-on roll-off service which will carry lorries between Kolad and Boisar.
IR has asked Central Railway and Western Railway to examine the feasibility of running piggyback trains from Jawaharlal Nehru Port, which sees more than 5000 lorry movements a day.
Lorries currently take around 7-8 hours to complete the journey between Kolad and Boisar, but the piggyback train is expected to reduce the

trip to around six hours. Each train will carry around 40 lorries.
Konkan Railway launched India’s first piggyback service in 1999 and these services still operate today, linking Kolad with Verna in Goa and Suratkal in Karnataka.

Most of the trucks loaded on the RORO trains coming from Konkan Railway shall be destined to far off destinations like ST, BRC, AHM, Rajasthan, DELHI etc, then why to carry the trucks only till Boisar and not to the final destination or a location near to final destination and earn more revenue? A huge market awaits the cash strapped IR to reap benefits, but IR had been silent on this issue since decades!
.
Once the major background job had already done by thee newly born KR in 1999, it is

very easy for IR to just extend the incoming trains to their network and earn additional revenue. Unloading points have to be developed at major/identified locations which is not a big/costly affair.

The roll-on-roll-off service for trucks is expected to decongest traffi c in Uran and Thane, and reduce pollution.
The Indian Railways is planning to start a roll-on-roll-off (Ro-Ro) service between Kolad and Boisar. The first test run was successfully conducted between the two stations yesterday. The Ro-Ro service, in which trucks are loaded onto railway wagons, from the outskirts of large cities and deposited at ports and industrial hubs, is expected to help decongest traffic and reduce pollution in Uran, JNPT, Nagothane, Thane, and Bhiwandi.
“The trial run was successful, and we are

now looking at other operational feasibilities such as loading/unloading and infrastructural requirements,” said Ravinder Bhakar, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway. Besides examining the feasibility of the service, the trial run will also help the Railways explore the possibility of maximising freight earnings. According to a Central Railway officer, a Ro-Ro services rake can carry 40 trucks, and help save approximately 10 litres of diesel per kilometre.
Truckers usually take seven to eight hours to travel between Kolad and Boisar, but the Ro-Ro service is expected to cover the same distance in six hours.
A senior officer of Western Railways said that the Railway Board had asked Western and Central Railway to explore the feasibility of running Ro-Ro services from JNPT (over 5,000 trucks ply in and out of the port every day). He said that while the trial run was successful, there were some heightrelated issues with large containers, and Railways would study the exact number of trucks and containers that ply on the stretch before taking a final decision.
The first ever Ro-Ro service in India was run by Konkan Railway in 1999. The service is currently operational between Kolad and Verna, in Goa, and Kolad and Suratkal, in Karnataka.
“Goods delivery takes less than 12 hours between Kolad and Verna, and less than 22 hours between Kolad and Suratkal. The same distance by road would take at least about 24 and 40 hours respectively,” said a senior officer of Konkan Railway.
The trial run has found favour with Bal Malkit Singh, chairman, core committee of All India Motor Transport Congress. “It will definitely attract truckers,” he said. Transport expert Rishi Agrawal said that the introduction of Ro-Ro services between JNPT and Boisar would be a win-win situation for all stake-holders.

A good step taken. I wonder how it took 17 long years for IR to recognise the utility of RORO which was pioneered by KR since 1999 and is in continuous operation since then with the RORO traffic continuously increasing year after year.
.
IR need to adopt RORO in a big way not just to decongest roads in major cities, but also as a source to earn more revenue, along with saving of money as well as time for truck operators, and also as a step towards environmental protection.

A seat-sharing fight turned ugly with three men assaulting a cook and throwing him out of a moving train at Boisar. What’s worse, no help arrived from the government railway police (GRP) for two hours and the victim had to be taken on a handcart to a primary health centre.
Ajay Pandey, 37, boarded the 69161 Down Panvel-Dahanu local from Boisar around 9.20pm on Monday. After getting into the compartment, Pandey had a heated argument with three passengers over seat sharing. Angry at being challenged, they dragged Pandey to the door and threw him on the platform after the train gathered speed.
Pandey

lay unconscious on the platform for two hours before a passenger, Umakant Bharti, took him to the Nandgaon primary health centre — 2km away — on a handcart. “I was waiting for a train when I saw Pandey lying on the platform. I called out to the police officials, but they did not help. I also asked the Western Railway porters to assist me, but they too refused. I then took him on a handcart which was lying outside the station premises. Even then, the railway ambulance was not around for help,” Bharti told dna.
Pramod Dawre, police inspector, Palghar GRP, said they will register a case of attempt to murder against unknown people. “We will soon track down the culprits,” he said.
Pandey has suffered head injuries and bruises on his body.
