The bi-weekly express has been provided with metallic Braille signages inside the coaches indicating berth numbers, location of alarm pull chains, toilets and emergency windows
The Mysuru-Varanasi Express is set to become the country’s first visually-challenged friendly train when it chugs off from the city on Tuesday.
The bi-weekly express Train Number 16229/16230 which leaves Mysuru for Varanasi on Tuesdays and Thursdays, has been provided with metallic Braille signages inside the coaches indicating the berth numbers, location of alarm pull chains, toilets and emergency windows. The Braille signage also has instructions on the

operation of emergency exit windows for the use of visually challenged in times of any exigency. The initiative was financed by Pratap Simha, Mysuru MP, from the MPLAD Fund. Mr. Simha inaugurated and inaugurated by him on Monday.
Though the Puri-Delhi Purushottam Express was the first train in the country to have a Braille-embedded coach, the Mysuru-Varanasi Express is the first train in the country where all reserved coaches have been embedded with Braille signage, said Rajkumar Lal, Divisional Railway Manager, Mysuru division of the South Western Railways.
“The plan is to extend the facility to all the reserved coaches of long-distance trains in a phase-wise manner,” he added. Braille signage has been introduced on one rake of the Mysuru-Varanasi Express and the facility will be provided for the second rake of the same train as well. The Chamundi Express and the Mysuru-Talguppa Express are other two trains that will be provided with Braille signages after this, said Mr.Lal.
The Mysuru Division, which operates 118 trains, has plans for such signages for all long-distance and express trains.
Ms. Netravati, a visually-impaired person, welcomed the initiative and said that it will help them identify the seats or berths without seeking help from others. “We will be more independent and at times people do not respond properly as they to tend to be in a hurry to locate their berths,” said Netravati.
However, the coach numbers have conventional signage and the plan is to affix Braille signage for the coaches as well, said officials.

There are plans to increase the speed of trains operating on Mysuru-Bengaluru section owing to likely completion of the track doubling work between the two cities.Sources in the South Western Railway SWR told UNI that almost 90 per cent of the track-laying work on the section was completed, and this had augmented the line capacity for operating more services, besides speeding up the existing trains. Some of the trains could be speeded up to reduce the running time by 20 to 25 In view of the ongoing doubling works, there are too many speed restrictions along certain stretches and there are plans to lift them so that the running time of the trains is reduced. The locomotive pilots are issued Caution Drive (CD) slips before each departure, mentioning the stretches along which, speed restrictions are to be observed. There are as many as 15 CD stretches along the Mysuru-Bengaluru section and...
some of them are as long as 500 meters, where the train speed is limited to 15 kmph or 20 kmph and it will be lifted before this year. This alone will help gain about 20 minutes, while increasing the speed will help further reduce the commuting time, said Mr Rajkumar Lal, Divisional Railway Manager. Mr Lal said, at present, some of the trains take up to three hours to cover the distance, while a few express trains take around 2 hours and 30 minutes to cover the 139-km stretch between the two cities. If speed was to be increased, then commuting between Mysuru and Bengaluru in express trains could be covered in two hours by most trains on a conservative estimate, he reasoned. The official said there are also plans to introduce additional train services on the section and a proposal had already been submitted for running a new train departing from Bengaluru at around 1915 hrs, for which, there is a high demand from the public. From Mysuru, there are demands for operating additional services between 1100 hrs and and 1400 hrs, as during that time there are insufficient outbound trains to Bengaluru. He said, now 25 pairs of trains operate between Mysuru and Bengaluru, including four weekly, three bi-weekly and one train for six days a week. Of these, 18 trains are express and seven are passenger services. The need for a second railway terminal for Mysuru stemmed from the imperatives of operating additional services from the city to the rest of the country to enhance connectivity, he added.Mr Lal said the introduction of additional trains from Mysuru also hinges on infrastructure for maintenance of rakes. The primary maintenance are carried out at the pit-lines and the Mysuru station, which has three pit-lines, was entrusted with the task of primary maintenance of seven-pair of trains, each lasting about six to eight hours, he said, adding, two of the pit -lines can accommodate rakes of 24 coaches and the third can berth a 21-coach rake.
He said, in addition, certain trains have secondary maintenance, which takes about three hours, and hence all the three pit-lines in the city station are always occupied by rakes. The primary maintenance of rakes in the Mysuru Division takes place at Mysuru and Ariskere Junction, he noted. Mr Lal said, unless additional pit-lines are created at Belagola, it will reduce the number of trains that can be operated from Mysuru. Hence, it is imperative to develop the station as the second terminal for the city, he added.UNI BSP KVV RSS 1240

MYSURU:People travelling between Mysuru and Bengaluru are facing severe hardship due to the less number of trains running during peak hours.
Compartments of the existing trains, especially the Chamundi Express, are packed and people vie for space even in the aisle of the trains. Some even cling to the doors precariously.
While the plight of women and children is more serious, the worst affected are the senior citizens.
Elderly

women, unable to stand for hours, are forced to sit on the floor between seats or in the vestibule connecting two compartments. Reaching the nearest toilet becomes a huge task as the way to it is crammed with passengers.
Residents of Mandya, Maddur and Ramanagaram are heavily dependent on this train. Quite a large number of labourers, teachers, workers, and officials, who are daily commuters, struggle to hold on.
Three trains depart from Mysuru in the morning: Karwar-Bengaluru Express — 5.30 am, passenger train — 5.50 am and Chamundi Express — 6.45 am. Commuters take these trains to work. Chamundi Express reaches Bengaluru at 9.40 am, just in time for the office-goers.
Similarly, the evening trains towards Mysuru from Bengaluru are Tippu Express — 3 pm, Mysuru-Chamarajanagar — 3.30 pm and Chamundi Express — 6.15 pm.
The Mysuru-Chamarajanagar train, which used to leave at 4.30 pm has now been advanced to 3.30 pm. After this, there are no trains till 6.15 pm, which is the designated time for Chamundi Express.
Women who work in garment factories in various locations, reach the railway station around 4.30 pm can be seen biding time on the platform for the Bengaluru train.
Chamundi Express can seat 108 people, but at least 250 people travel in it. Even those with reservations cannot sit without sharing their seats, passengers complain.
“The shortage of trains is causing a lot of hardship. There is a need to introduce a train during the peak hours — from 6.30 am to 7.30 am — so that Chamundi is less crowded. Railway officials have failed to address the problems of passengers,” said Nethravathi, a native of Bidadi, who works in Bengaluru.
Mysore Grahakara Parishad president Chandra Prakash said, “Till work on doubling the track is not completed, extra trains have to be introduced during peak hours. To reduce congestion in Mysuru City Railway Station, steps should be taken to halt the train at Naguvanahalli, so that residents of nearby areas can alight while another stop can be provided at Ashokapuram.”
DRM Rajukar Lal said more trains will be introduced after doubling of the track. “We are planning to augment some trains with additional bogies,” he said

BENGALURU: To redress the grievances aired by representatives of the public from various districts, the Bangalore Railway Division has decided upon a few new services, the extension of some routes, and a change in time of departure of one train.
These decisions were the outcomes of a Railway Users’ Consultative Committee meeting held in the city on Friday between committee members and top officials of all Railway Departments.
The departure timing of the Bangalore-Mysore passenger train from the City station will be delayed by 15 minutes. “It will depart by 7.15 pm instead

of 7 pm. An announcement will be made shortly,” Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Sanjiv Agarwal said.
New DEMU Services
The DRM told Express that two new special Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) services may be introduced between Yeshwantpur and Ramanagaram. The proposal is for one train to leave Yeshwantpur at 3.40 pm and touch Ramanagaram at 5.50 pm with a stoppage at the City railway station enroute. In the other direction, the train will leave Ramanagaram at 6.30 pm and terminate at City at 7.50 pm. The other DEMU service is planned between the City station and Channapatna. The train will leave City at 6.35 pm and reach Channapatna at 8 pm. On return, it will leave Channapatna at 8.30 pm and touch City at 10.10 pm. “A proposal with these two services has been sent to Hubballi for approval,” he added.
Many members had asked for additional trains along the Bengaluru-Mysuru stretch between 4 pm and 7 pm to ease traffic. “The DEMU services will take traffic away from the existing trains,” Agarwal said.
A decision has also been taken to extend the existing route of a train between Yeshwantpur and Devanahalli up to Chikkaballapur and to extend Train No 56525 between City and Chikkaballapur to Kolar.
“These have been decided upon and sent for approval,” he added.
A K Sita Ram, president of Travellers Association (Kolar) asked for the change in timing of the train from Bangalore Cantonment and Bangarpet (Train no 76507) to 1.30 pm in the interest of students, who commute to Bengaluru.
“After completion of classes around 12 noon, they end up waiting till 2.45 pm for the next train to Bangarpet,” he added. They are unable to make it to the station before 12.20 pm when a train departs. He also called for issual of reserved tickets from Bangarpet to Mysuru station.
Suburban Trains
Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Dr Anup Dayanand Sadhu said that the Railways had informed the state government that suburban rail service for the City was not possible with the existing infrastructure.
“Only after an automatic signalling system is put in place, can line capacity be enhanced and connectivity established between City and Whitefield, Tumakuru, Yelahanka and Ramanagaram.” Additional platforms are vital to run suburban services. There is a plan to shift the pit lines from City station to Binny Mill land and L&T land so that the space can be used for additional platforms, Dr Sadhu said.
Additional coaches and DEMUs and Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMUs) were also required, he added. DRM Sanjiv Agarwal said that RITES had sent across its proposal on rail services. “We are examining feasibility of proposals, particularly the operational part and cost factor. It will take us some time to reach a decision.”
