HYDERABAD: A slightly modified plan for the second phase of Multi-Modal Transit System (MMTS) seeking to connect Patancheru with the city on one side and Ghatkesar on the other, has been accepted by the State Government.
The lines that have been cleared towards strengthening the MMTS services include Secunderabad-Medchal (28 km), Falaknuma-International Airport, Shamshabad (20 km) and Secunderabad-Ghatkesar (19 km).
It has also been decided to revive the 8-km abandoned line between Tellapur, further down Lingampally, and Patancheru. This would mean extension of the MMTS services up to Patancheru.

of lines
It was also decided to strengthen the line between Moulali and Sanathnagar and also the one connecting Kachiguda with Moulali. Apart from MMTS services, these two lines would help in decongestion of the Secunderabad station by allowing diversion of goods trains.
Once the bypass of Kachiguda-Moulali and Sanathnagar-Moulali are strengthened, goods services running from Vijayawada, Delhi and Kolkata to Mumbai will be diverted on these routes and avoid having to enter the Secunderabad yard, says N.V.S.Reddy, MMTS Project Director.
The revival of Tellapur-Patancheru tracks would mean extending the service to one of the busiest city outskirts on tracks that have been lying idle for a long time after the railways abandoned a failed sub-urban service to Patancheru.
Budget-sharing
On the Secunderabad-Ghatkesar route, there are two lines at present and the proposal envisages adding a third line for the MMTS service.
This new proposed networking of MMTS would comprise six lines at an estimated cost of Rs. 325 crores. The budget would be split between the State Government and the Railways with the former contributing Rs. 217 crores.
Mr.Reddy said the MMTS trains have started drawing more commuters in the last few months with the number of users going up by almost 1,000 each month. "On an average, about 34,000 commuters are using the service every day," he said. A review of the service was done at a meeting in which the South Central Railways General Manager, D.N.Mathur, also took part on Thursday. The proposal on the second phase which received the approval of the Chief Minister, Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy would now be sent to the Railway Board, Mr.Reddy said.

GPS/GPRS enabled information system to transmit details of a train’s location and project arrival timings, reducing the anxiety of waiting at stations
Faced with criticism over poor punctuality of MMTS trains, the South Central Railway (SCR) has launched a GPS/GPRS-enabled passenger information system in all MMTS trains. Under this initiative, around 215 high-definition LED monitors are installed on 69 platforms in 26 MMTS stations in the capital.
This system provides information on real-time basis to passengers on the platforms about the operations and location of the MMTS trains. SCR operates 121 MMTS trains

in the capital, and over 1.5 lakh people commute in these trains daily. However, there has been an increase in the number of complaints about poor punctuality of MMTS trains.
As giving information about the arrival of MMTS trains and their locations at the enquiry counters can be taxing, the SCR officials came up with the idea of installing GPS/GPRS equipped passenger information system in the trains. A Global Positioning System-based receptor module is fixed in each motorcar of all MMTS trains.
This device encrypts processes and transmits information about train number, route and current location, etc. to a main server using GPRS. An external main server receives and analyses this encrypted data, decrypts and sends out information to local servers installed at stations.
The local server at a particular station feeds the relevant information to the display monitors positioned on the platforms. These monitors display current location of the three MMTS trains on the run and that are to arrive at a particular station in either direction in three languages Telugu, Hindi and English.
The auto announcement for MMTS trains is given twice between the intervals of five and two minutes before the arrival of the train, explained SCR spokesperson.

Commuters using MMTS railway services in Hyderabad and neighbouring regions can now have real-time information on train positions on advanced LED display monitors at all stations.
The South Central Railways is executing a project to set up LED display monitors at all the 26 stations that connect MMTS services on the Falaknuma-Secunderabad-Lingampalli route. These are connected to a global positioning and general packet radio systems
The railways operate 121 MMTS services on this 42-km route, ferrying about 1.5 lakh passengers every day. About 215 LED monitors have so far been set up on

69 platforms at these stations, a statement from SC Railway said.
A GPS based receptor module, which receives its latitude and longitude co-ordinates from satellite, is fixed on each of the motorcar in all MMTS trains.
This device encrypts, processes and transmits information on train number, route and current location to a main server using GPRS. No manual intervention is required for any inputs. An external main server receives and analyses this encrypted data, decrypts and sends out information to local servers installed at stations.
The local server at a particular station feeds the relevant information to the display monitors positioned on the platforms. These monitors display the current location of the next three MMTS trains on run that are to arrive at a particular station in either direction.
This position automatically gets updated on real-time basis as per the movement of the train. The train number, route, the live status of the train and the expected arrival/delays at that station is displayed for the next three trains in sequence in three languages – Telugu, Hindi and English, the statement added.
This system can be used for displaying useful information on the other regular express/passenger trains also. In addition, this system automatically triggers public announcements in the three languages on the next expected trains at that station.

The South Central Railway (SCR) went hi-tech with the establishment of a modern, high-end LED passenger information display system on the platforms at all the Multi Modal Transportation (MMTS) stations in the twin cities. The automated self-intelligent system enhances passenger convenience with useful information on real-time basis on a host of issues related to passengers waiting on station platforms. The latest passenger information display system on the platforms is meant to provide customer-friendly service delivery mechanisms towards enhancing passengers’ railway experience. SCR chief public relations officer, K Sambasiva Rao, informed that the current position of running of trains is an important data input that needs to be conveyed on a real-time basis to passengers on platforms. As hundreds of passengers gather at a time on platforms to board trains during peak hours, it is practically difficult to satisfy their enquiry needs through manual counters. To handle such situations, universal train information display boards have...

been provided in a big way at all major stations. However, keeping in view the needs of suburban commuters on the MMTS system, advanced LED display monitors which provide real-time passenger related information have been recently set up on an outsourcing basis. The system design is based on Global Positioning System (GPS) and General Packet Radio System (GPRS) technologies. Presently, the SCR operates as many as 121 MMTS services on Falaknuma-Secunderabad, Hyderabad-Lingampalli routes (42 kms) in over 26 stations, ferrying around 1.5 lakh passengers on an average per day.
About 215 high-definition LED monitors have been set up at 69 platforms at all 26 MMTS stations. The GPS-based receptor module, which receives its latitude and longitude co-ordinates from satellite is fixed in each motor car in all MMTS trains.
This device encrypts, processes and transmits information on train number, route, current location, etc to a main server using GPRS. No manual intervention is required for any input. An external main server receives and analyses this encrypted data, decrypts and sends out information to local servers installed at stations.
The local server at a particular station feeds the relevant information to display monitors positioned on the platforms. These monitors display the current location of the next three MMTS trains that are scheduled to arrive at a particular station from either direction. The train number, route, live status of the train and the expected arrivals, delays, etc at that station will be displayed for the next three trains in sequence in English, Hindi and Telugu.
This system can be used for displaying useful information on the other regular express and passenger trains (non-MMTS) also, such as their expected time, delays and platform number at major stations in Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Begumpet, Kacheguda, Lingampalli and Falaknuma.
In addition, this system automatically triggers public announcements in three languages on the next expected trains at that station. The auto announcements for MMTS trains are given five minutes before and again two minutes before the arrival of the train for alerting passengers.
Such live tracking of all MMTS trains and display of station-specific information in a passenger-friendly format and auto announcements will be of immense help to the passengers as they get updated on the status of trains on a real-time basis, obviating the need for any enquiry on this. The display services as mentioned above will be available from 4 am to 11.59 pm. daily.

Many a time, MMTS trains on Lingampally-Falaknuma route, and a few other passenger trains, get delayed for over an hour to ensure a smooth run for specials carrying VIPs
Next time you board a train, pray that no inspection special train carrying the Railway Minister or senior members of the Railway Board is chugging along the same route. If it is, then the chances of your train being delayed for a long time, is quite possible. This is what has been happening for the local trains and other services whenever Union Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge accompanied by a team of senior officials travels in his special inspection train from Gulbarga to Umdanagar via Secunderabad railway station. The daily schedule of many trains of the Multi-Modal

Transport System (MMTS) on the Lingampally-Falaknuma section and a few other passenger trains is going haywire – at times the delay being for more than an hour – to ensure a smooth run for the special train carrying the VIPs.
Ripple effect
Delays in clearing the MMTS trains is having a cascading effect on other services too, complains S. Krishnamurthy, a regular commuter on the Lingampally route.
In the last few months, Mr. Kharge had travelled quite a few times in his inspection special on the Gulbarga-Umdanagar route and vice-versa. Gulbarga being his constituency, the Minister prefers to travel on this route since it is convenient to reach Shamshabad airport and board a flight to New Delhi.
It is much more convenient than travelling by road from his constituency to the Bangalore airport, say railway officials, pleading anonymity.
While it takes just about half-hour to reach Umdanagar station from Secunderabad station in a special train, covering the same distance by road takes much longer.
And, it’s not just the Railway Minister. Even senior railway officials including Railway Board members prefer special inspection trains over travelling by road.
For instance, during the recent launch of the Raichur-Gadwal railway line, a special train was operated from Secunderabad to Raichur for the convenience of senior railway authorities.
Authorities deny charges
However, railway authorities deny that other train services were being hit or passengers being put to inconvenience because of running the special trains.
“Other trains are not stopped for more than 10 minutes whenever special trains are run,” they claim.
Other passenger trains are usually stopped due to security and operational reasons to make way for the Minister’s special train, the SCR spokesperson said.
