AURANGABAD: The extension of the Latur-Mumbai Express train till Bidar in adjoining Karnataka came as a boon for Latur, Osmanabad and Beed, as the railway ministry has sanctioned three new rail services for these districts.
The announcement was made by Union railway minister Suresh Prabhu after Latur district guardian minister Sambhaji Patil Nilangekar met him in Delhi on Monday.
The extension of the Mumbai train had sparked tension in parts of Marathwada with Latur and Osmanabad observing a shut down on May 5.

the residents of Latur and Osmanabad were demanding a rollback of the decision to avoid overcrowding of the popular train, locals from Udgir taluka in Latur district were pressing for continuation of the stretched route having received added rail connectivity.
The three new rail services will now include a service from Bidar to Mumbai via Latur and Osmanabad, which is scheduled to start on July 1, and the Yashwantpur-Bidar Express will be extended up to Latur in the next three weeks. Besides, the work of laying of new railway track from Latur road to Gulbarga will be inaugurated by December.
Nilangekar, who is labour and skill development minister in the state government, said that his party leaders converted the problem into an opportunity while acting on the Latur rail issue.
"Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis spoke with Prabhu to safeguard the interest of Latur residents. After the extension of Latur-Mumbai Express till Bidar, the railway minister has now ensured that the quota of Latur should not be compromised with and hence he has agreed to provide the new railway services," Nilangekar said in a statement.
The minister also said that the survey for the railway line from Latur road to Gulbarga will be completed by September.

The minister also said that the survey for the railway line from Latur road to Gulbarga will be completed by September.
While activists from Latur and Osmanabad had given a call for rail-roko on Tuesday, the railway ministry's stand is to diffuse tension. The railway ministry had recently approved extension to Latur-Mumbai Express train (number 22107/22108) till Bidar in keeping with the demand of passengers.
However, the move sparked unexpected tension in parts of Marathwada with Latur and Osmanabad observing shutdown on May 5. While residents of Latur and Osmanabad were demanding a rollback of the decision to avoid overcrowding of the popular train, locals from Udgir taluka in Latur district were pressing for continuation of the stretched route having received added rail connectivity.
The issue had also given birth to inter-taluka dispute in Latur district over rail issues and also put local political leadership from the ruling BJP in a fix.
Omprakash Varma of Marathwada Railway Vikas Samiti said Latur getting three rail services is a victory for local politicians. "The local leadership in Latur area mobilised things and even met the railway minister. If politicians from Auragabad show similar willpower, the pending projects in Aurangabad could also get a push," he said.

He appeals to the Railway Ministry to speed up works that are under way
M. Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, has expressed discontent over the slow pace of railway works in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region.
Addressing a press conference at Aiwan-E-Shahi guest house in Kalaburagi on Monday, he appealed to the Union Railway Ministry to continue working on the initiatives he had taken during his brief tenure as Union Railway Minister and to speed up the works that are under way.
“In

order to develop railway infrastructure in the Hyderabad-Karnataka region, I, as Union Railway Minister, had taken many initiatives such as opening a railway divisional office in Kalaburagi, laying of tracks between the Bidar and Kalaburagi stretch and the Wadi and Gadag stretch, electrification of railway tracks, and construction of railway over-bridges at several level-crossings at Wadi. While a few of these are yet to take off despite having budgetary allocations, the rest seem to be moving at a snail’s pace,” Mr. Kharge said.
He added that the issue of scarcity of sand that had delayed tunnel work on the Kalaburagi-Bidar railway stretch had been resolved by involving both the Kalaburagi Regional Commissioner and the Raichur Deputy Commissioner who would facilitate quality sand extraction from Raichur district. “I hope the work will be completed by September,” he said.
Highlighting the statutory issues involved in procurement of gravel required for track-doubling works, Mr. Kharge said that he had talked to the others concerned for facilitating hassle-free procurement. “As per the new rules, permission is required for gravel mining. Upon my direction, the Regional Commissioner has asked the contractor to collect gravel from government land and only then approach private ones if a sufficient quantity is not available in the former source,” he said.

Suspected dacoits snatch valuables from train passengers near Shahabad
Motcha Ragini who was pushed out of Mumbai-Nagercoil Express at Shahabad Railway Station by suspected dacoits on Tuesday.— Photo: Arun Kulkarni × It was a harrowing experience for 70 odd passengers in the unreserved compartments of Mumbai-Nagercoil Express on Tuesday night when a group of suspected dacoits terrorised them and took away their cash, gold ornaments and other valuables between Gulbarga and Shahabad stations.
“A group of inebriated people beat us up and threatened us,” Motcha Ragini, who was pushed out of the train,

said.
Ms. Ragini is undergoing treatment for the head injuries she suffered after she fell from the train on the platform on Shahabad Railway Station.
She said, “It all started after the train left Gulbarga Railway Station. A group of seven to eight persons started waking up people and asked them to hand over money and other valuables.”
“Those who resisted were beaten up… my husband Velankanni and I were sitting in seats near the toilet. We were pushed near the exit door by other passengers who were trying to escape,” Ms. Ragini, who hails from Thirukonam village in Vizhupuram district in Tamil Nadu, said.
As the train neared Shahabad Railway Station, one of the passengers pulled the chain. While six of the suspected dacoits snatched Ms. Ragini’s mangalsutra and pushed her out of the train before escaping in the cover of darkness, another man was caught by other passengers and beaten up before being handed over to the police.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Railways) K. Basavaraj told The Hindu that police teams had been sent to different parts of the district.
“We will question the suspected dacoit who has been admitted to the government hospital at Wadi.”
A case has been registered with the Wadi Railway Police.
One of the suspected dacoits has been handed over to the police by the passengers

The police arrested around 40 members of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike when they made an attempt to block the Pune-Secunderabad Shatabdi Express at the Kalaburagi Railway Station on Thursday, in protest against the Supreme Court’s verdict on Cauvery waters.
The protesting members of the vedike managed to break the security cordon and rushed to the station’s entrance where they were stopped by team of police personnel. Following this, the agitators raised slogans and burnt the posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at the entrance of the railway station before they were arrested.

Gulbarga-Hyderabad Inter-city Express resumes service
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu flagged off the Gulbarga-Hyderabad Inter-city Express through a video link from the Secunderabad Railway Station on Monday. He was joined by Medical Education Minister Sharanprakash Patil at the Gulbarga Railway Station.
The same train was inaugurated without any official function in February. But the service was discontinued after a month owing to lack of response from passengers. Major reasons for this were the unsuitable departure timing of the train from the Gulbarga and Hyderabad railway stations and the decision by the Railways not to provide halts at Chittapur, Malkhed and Sedam stations.
No official reason was given for the flagging of the train for the second time. The schedule of the train and halts remain the same. Senior officials did not give any reason for not changing them.
Dr. Patil said that the timing should be changed to suit the requirement of passengers and the Railways should provide halts at Chittapur, Malkhed and Sedam stations. Basavaraj Patil Sedam, MP, said that he had discussed the issue with the Railway Minister. He also demanded that the Railway Ministry start the work of setting up a railway divisional headquarters in Kalaburagi.
The former Minister Qamarul Islam expressed his happiness over the resumption of the train and wanted more halts and a change in the timing.
The train would start at 10.15 a.m. in Kalaburagi and reach Hyderabad at 2.50 p.m. While returning, the train will leave Hyderabad at 4 p.m. and reach Kalaburagi at 9 p.m.
The train will stop at Shahabad, Wadi, Tandur, Vikarabad, and Lingampally.
This train will have one AC chair car, and 10 coaches of second class reserved coaches.
Divisional Railway Manager of Central Railways at Solapur Ajai Kumar Dubey was present.
The train was inaugurated in February, but the service was discontinued

The possibility of underground rail connectivity to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport from Umdanagar to Shamshabad would be looked into and the task of conducting a survey would be given to Rail India Technical and Economic Services (Rites) said the Railway minister Suresh Prabhu. It may be noted that last mile connectivity to the airport has become a major issue with the GMR airport authorities not willing to part with the required land.
The minister said that it would be seen if it was possible to go ahead with the underground rail with the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) Phase II from Umdanagar to Shamshabad or the Hyderabad Metro Rail.
