GUWAHATI, Feb 4 - Noting the growing congestion in Guwahati city, the Railway Ministry has sanctioned an elevated four-track line over the city from Kamakhya to New Guwahati, a project that will leave the present station in the heart of the city as just a ‘wayside station’ from where no trains would originate.
The plan is likely to be integrated with the Smart City project.
Briefing about the Budget announcements, Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain today said his ministry has also sanctioned a double-track bridge over the Brahmaputra, parallel to Saraighat

(third at that location) and discussions are being held with the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) to keep a road provision in it.
“The second bridge at Saraighat has no provision for railway track. They should have thought about it. Anyway, the Railway Ministry has sanctioned a third bridge. It will have double-track provision. We are also taking up the matter with the MoRTH for keeping a road provision in it,” Gohain said.
Work on the bridge is expected to start next year.
Once the elevated track is in place, the Guwahati Railway Station will be an elevated one and the yard and other infrastructure will be shifted from the area, mostly likely to New Guwahati. “After the land is cleared, we will call for bids from private parties to develop the area,” Gohain said.
The elevated track, to be around 10 km in length, is estimated to cost around Rs 3,062 crore.
“While planning the project, we have taken into account the traffic demand in the next 50 years. Two of the tracks in the elevated platform will be for goods trains and as many for passenger trains. We will also explore if local trains can be operated on the elevated track,” the minister said.
The Railway Ministry has also sanctioned electrification of the railway line up to Dibrugarh, which will include the Sivasagar loop. Earlier, the sanction was only up to Guwahati.
Moreover, Kamakhya is one of the 25 stations selected for redevelopment. Tender notice for technical-cum-financial proposal for redevelopment of the station at a cost of Rs 225 crore will be published on February 8, Gohain said.
Surveys have also been sanctioned in 12 new lines in the State – Chaparmukh to Jowai via Dalimbari, Baithalangso, Kheroni; Itakhola to Seijosa; Doomdooma to Wakro via Simaluguri, Namsai, Chowkham; Dangri to Roing; Naharkatiya to Deomali; Lekhapani to Deban via Nampong; Pencharthal-Kailashahar-Dharmanagar; Tetelia to Moirabari via Patekibori; Rangiya to Dekargaon via Sipajhar, Mangaldai, Orang; Tinsukia to Pasighat; Bongaigaon to Agthori and Gogamukh to Jorhat via Majuli.
Among the other sanctioned projects are new BG lines from Sivasagar to Jorhat, Salona to Khumtai and Tezpur to Silghat, new workshop for refurbishing of LHB coaches at New Bongaigaon, pit line at Silghat, goods circulating area at Senchoa and Haiborgaon, high-level platform at Dhubri, staff quarters at New Bongaigaon and Dangtol, etc.
The government has also sanctioned a project to man all the 48 unmanned railway crossings.

Assam to get 3 new mega railway projects
Ron Duarah
DIBRUGARH, Feb 3 - The Narendra Modi Government has decided to gift three mega rail projects to the State, involving a total outlay of more than Rs 10,000 crore. The existing railway infrastructure like the Bogibeel bridge, new lines to the Barak valley, Manipur and Tripura, etc., are all roll-over projects from previous governments, and hence these three new mega projects would have the Modi touch, it is learnt.
The

new projects are a new railway alignment between Sivasagar and Jorhat, a new line between Khumtai and Salona, and a new line between Silghat and Tezpur, with a railway bridge over the Brahmaputra at Koliabhomora. While not confirmed, a new railway bridge over the Brahmaputra at Saraighat is also a clear possibility. All these announcements are likely to be made shortly, most possibly by Assam’s own minister at the Centre, Rajen Gohain, who is Minister of State for Railways.
The Jorhat-Sivasagar alignment has been a long standing public demand, and the Dibrugarh Nagarik Sangha has been asking for this line since the past ten years. This line would complete the Jorhat-Sivasagar-Moran-Dibrugarh axis, and also act as a parallel to the Dibrugarh-Guwahati main line via Tinsukia and Simaluguri. The new Jorhat-Dibrugarh axis has the potential to bring about a transport revolution in upper Assam and also aid accelerated economic development of all the upper Assam districts.
The existing Jorhat-Baruabamungaon-Furkating link would also be extended from Khumtai to Salona, which would link up the Chaparmukh-Nagaon-Silghat line. A portion of the new Khumtai-Salona line may be subterranean, especially within the Kaziranga National Park area. As such, tunnelling works on this section is being considered, according to top railway sources.
The Tezpur-Silghat new line, along with a new railway bridge over the Brahmaputra at Koliabhomora, would complete the upper Assam railway expansion map. If the planners do their work well, sections of the new and existing alignments would be electrified and doubled, so as to enable smoother and faster rail traffic.
The proposed Dibrugarh-Guwahati Shatabdi Express is also likely to be commenced shortly. The Northeast Frontier Railway is awaiting the arrival of the spruced up new Shatabdi rake from Kapurthala, and once this arrives, the service will commence, with Dibrugarh as the base.

GUWAHATI, Dec 13 - Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced the system of issuing PRS tickets through credit and debit card transaction.
The first machine was installed at PRS Kamakhya on December 12 and made operational from today, said NFR Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) Pranav Jyoti Sharma.
“With this, the passengers now can purchase reserved tickets by swapping the card as per the tie-up with State Bank of India (SBI). A total of 237 PRS having 315 counters will be provided with Point of Sale (POS) machines, for which necessary intimation has

been given to SBI," he said.
The Chief General Manager of SBI visited the Kamakhya station today along with railway officials and said that seamless operation will be provided at each location.
The POS machine provided is based on GPS technology and no telephone connection is required. The machine can work for a period of six hours at a stretch without electricity. POS machines will be installed in a phased manner.
“The important PRS will be covered first. And thereafter the other stations will be provided with this facility,” Sharma said.
In the wake of the Central government’s demonetisation drive and its efforts towards a less-cash and cashless economy, Guwahati city, too, is gearing up for embracing cashless transactions in a more inclusive way.
Yesterday, Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Dr M Angamuthu had told this newspaper that steps would be taken to educate citizens, especially women, students and small business owners, on various digital financial tools like e-wallet, POS, unified payments interface (UPI), and others.
He said the exercise will include effective training involving citizens’ services centres for all and gaon panchayat and ward-wise training programme for PRI and other public representatives, as well as beneficiary-oriented training programme for government scheme-linked beneficiaries. Wide publicity and linking various social media tools will be involved in the exercise, he said.

Two persons were killed and six others injured when two coaches and engine of the Guwahati-bound Capital Express derailed in north Bengal, with initial investigations suggesting that the driver overshot the signal. An inquiry has been ordered into the derailment and three railway employees, including the driver, have been suspended in connection with the mishap.
The train travelling from Bihar's Rajendra Nagar Terminal derailed at around 9 PM last night near Shamuktala Road station, about 32 km from Alipurduar Railway Division headquarters, NF Railway officials said. Initial reports had said that 10 persons were injured. Two bodies were found from the coaches and they appeared to be those of monks going by their clothes and footwear, NF Railway CPRO Pranav Jyoti Sharma

said.
Though prima facie cause of the accident was overshooting of signal by the driver of the train, a thorough inquiry will be conducted and action will be taken against the guilty, said a senior Railway Ministry official. Divisional Railway Manager, Alipurduar, Sanjiv Kishore said three persons - the driver, assistant driver and guard of the train have been suspended. He said work is on to remove the derailed coaches from the track.
Rail traffic, which had been stopped in both up and down lines in a diverted route, is being gradually restored, he added. About 150 of the stranded passengers were taken back to Alipurduar Junction by Kamakhya-Alipurduar Inter City Express. The unaffected portion of the train was detached. The train will resume journey once the relief operation is completed, he said.
The Accident Relief Train reached the site of the accident at 10 PM with railway doctors and relief materials and started rescue operations.

Munshi Nath(65) and Mahesh Nath (40) died after the engine and two coaches of the Rajendra Nagar-Guwahati Capital Express derailed near Assam border late night on Wednesday.
The train was expected to make a sudden halt at the Samuktala Road station, after it was asked to allow the Rajdhani Express to pass. The station was not a regular stop for the train and after overlooking the signal, the train overshot and crashed into the dead end, resulting in the derailment, which led to the descent of the engine into the canal along with a coach, while another coach crashed into the barricade.
RESCUE OPERATIONS UNDERWAY
"The engine and the first two coaches of the Capital Express which was en route to Guwahati got derailed. Accident Relief Medical Equipment Van was rushed to the spot immediately. There rescue team along with surgeons, doctors and engineers also arrived. The rescue operation is under progress," said Sanjib Kishore, Divisional Railway Manager.
Kishore added that the exact reason behind the incident is unknown. He said that the reason can be ascertained once an inquiry is set up. "The engine had crashed into the dead end. Railway machinery was immediately pressed into action," said Kishore.
"The unaffected portion of the train consisting of 19 coaches was detached and pushed back from the site. The train resumed its journey at 5:10am in the morning, after the rescue and relief operation was completed. The train reached Guwahati station at 11-00hrs with the remaining passengers," said Pranav Jyoti Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer of the North Frontier Railways, in a press release.
TWO DRIVERS, GUARD SUSPENDED
Two drivers and a guard have been suspended, who were involved in the overshooting of the train. A compensation of Rs 5,000 each has been announced to the injured passengers, who are being treated at a local hospital.
After the temporary disruption of rail services as a result of the accident, three trains have been cancelled while other trains have been diverted to ease conveyance; however the inconvenience to the passengers still continues.
"When the train crossed Samuktala Road, we felt like someone had pulled the emergency brakes. There was a lot of shouting and chaos all around. A lot of people got down to see what happened. There was rumour that the train had hit a passing wild elephant. We were very scared. We are waiting for the train to move as we all want go home as soon as possible," said Dhiraj Kumar Das one of the passengers in the train.
Das added that they hoped the railway authorities to arrange for another train to help them reach home at the earliest. He said that passengers aboard were scared and the guards had asked them to not panic

GUWAHATI, Nov 13 - Comfort of a semi-luxury train and thrill of safaris into the wilderness of Assam will be up for grabs for tourists from next February as the Assam Safari Express would starts its two trips, back to back, for the first time in the State.
A dream project for development of Assam tourism, the initiative of the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and Assam Tourism Development Corporation along with the Railways is getting its final shape in terms of cost-component and marketing, to make the ‘land and railway’ package more appealing and cost effective for the tourists.
The

package will offer three types of exotic safaris in Assam, including elephant safari and jeep safari in Kaziranga National Park and boat safari in Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. The itinerary has already been finalised by both the organisations, which includes a six-night package covering places like Guwahati, Kaziranga, Sivasagar, Tinsukia and Dibru-Saikhowa.
“Though it will be a semi-luxury train, our team is working to bring down the cost as much as possible before going into aggressive marketing for the package within the country as well as through our embassies to attract foreign tourists to Assam. The idea is to showcase the beautiful Assam with an irresistible package clubbing comfort and adventure,” Debashish Chandra, Group General Manager IRCTC, East Zone told The Assam Tribune.
“Success of this project might pave the way for a luxury tourist train in Assam like the Palace on Wheels or the Maharaja Express,” he added.
Reconnaissance on some aspects of the project is on after which the cost of the packages would be announced, and February 2, 2017 is the tentative date for rolling out the wheels.
“IRCTC will be responsible for the train part of luxury that will offer lodging and transport, whereas the ATDC will look after the land package in Assam. The package also includes one-day Shillong and Cherrapunjee visit for the visitors,” said ATDC managing director Anurag Singh.
“It will be a unique package focusing on Assam’s famous wildlife and forests, tea and tea gardens, archeological heritage of the Ahom kingdom, Assamese cuisine, cruise on the Brahmaputra and most importantly, Assam’s hospitality,” he added. The trip would start with a darshan of Kamakhya temple in Guwahati.
Some more inter-state routes and packages are being worked on, involving Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, etc.
With the State promoting tourism through several new initiatives and eyeing big ticket investment through public-private participation (PPP) mode, the ATDC and IRCTC have inked an MoU for collaborative ventures.

GUWAHATI, Nov 13 - The Indian Railways is looking to complete the electrification project on the Raninagar Jalpaiguri-New Bongaigaon-Guwahati section of the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) by December 2019.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had laid the foundation stone for the project at Maligaon here on Thursday.
Railway officials said that the project for electrification from Raninagar Jalpaiguri to New Bongaigaon and then from New Bongaigaon to Guwahati was entrusted with Rail Vikash Nigam Limited (RVNL), a Mini Ratna public sector undertaking under the Union Ministry of Railways in 2014 and 2015 respectively on

turnkey basis at a total cost of Rs 655.55 crore.
Under the project, 382 kms of the route and 687 kms track of railway lines will be electrified. The tender process is expected to be completed within a short period.
Officials said completion of the project will ensure that Guwahati has a seamless electrified route to cities like Kolkata and New Delhi and it will also eliminate the need for changing locomotives from electric to diesel and vice versa.
It will also ensure reduction of journey time and open up the possibility of increasing speed of trains.
Various organisations and local citizens of the State, including the Assam Rail Passengers’ Association (APRA) had been for years demanding electrification of the tracks in the region.
Electrification of railway routes from Katihar to Raninagar Jalpaiguri is in an advanced stage and expansion of electrification upto Guwahati will ensure seamless movement from the region to other parts of the country.
The 25 KV railway electrification project of Raninagar Jalpaiguri-New Bongaigaon-Guwahati section of NFR will also facilitate introduction of economical and environment-friendly mode of high-speed trains and also introduction of Main Line Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains providing fast suburban transport similar to Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi.
The electrification project will also include upgradation of signalling system in the section for faster movement of trains. Signalling upgradation work will be taken up at around 35 stations along the route.
The electrification project of Raninagar Jalpaiguri-New Bongaigaon-Guwahati section will include setting up of seven 220 and 132 KV traction substations and seven maintenance depots and sheds.
Officials said that Indian Railways has a long-term goal to electrify all railway routes in the country to reduce carbon footprint and reduce pollution.
Prabhu had recently announced that Indian Railways would electrify 24,400 km of additional railway lines under ‘Mission Electrification’ within the next five years to add to the existing 28,000 kms of electrified railway lines in India. This would make 90 per cent of railway tracks in India electrified.

Railways minister SP Prabhu announces Rs 5,000 crore joint venture with Assam government; project to eliminate 12 level crossings between Kamakhya and New Guwahati
BY OUR STAFF REPORTER
GUWAHATI, Nov 10: Announcing a slew of steps for rapid and large scale development of rail connectivity in the Northeastern region, Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu on Thursday announced a Rs 5,000 crore joint venture with Assam government to construct four elevated railway tracks between Kamakhya and New Guwahati to eliminate 12 level crossing gates in Guwahati city.
Prabhu

made the announcement while laying the foundation stone for the project of doubling of railway line from New Bongaigaon to Kamakhya via Goalpara town and the doubling of railway line from Digaru to Hojai at a glittering function held at the RPF Parade Ground at Maligaon. He also laid the foundation stone for the much-awaited railway electrification project for Raninagar Jalpaiguri – Guwahati via Rangiya railway line and flagged off the first passenger train services on the 10 kilometre Karimganj – Maishashan newly converted broad gauge section in Barak Valley.
Prabhu said construction of the elevated tracks connecting Kamakhya and New Guwahati would decongest city roads, free up railway land and enable railways to develop Guwahati station as a commercial hub. He also said the new projects would keep provisions for connectivity with the proposed metro rail system.
Speaking at the function, Assam Governor Banwarilala Purohit congratulated NF Railway team and the Railway Minister for their success in starting many projects in the Northeast on time.
While thanking the Railway Minister for his initiatives in development of rail network in the Northeast, Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal emphasized on speedy completion of all railway projects in the State. He also requested the Railway Minister to take up construction of railway lines so that every district headquarters of the State is connected by rail. The Chief Minister also requested Prabhu to initiate steps involving the Railways for skill development of the youth of the region.
The 10-km track between Karimganj and Maishashan was converted into broad gauge as part of the Lumding–Badarpur–Silchar gauge conversion project.
