HUBBALI: Short-distance passengers can travel in sleeper class in some trains without making a reservation.
In a bid to provide comfortable travel experience to short distance passengers, South Western Railway (SWR) has decided to de-reserve certain coaches in seven express trains. Accordingly, now passengers can buy unreserved journey tickets and commute in these earmarked sleeper coaches in the notified section.
This has been done for trains having poor patronage in selected sections during day time for comfort of unreserved passengers. For such de-reserved coaches, reservation facility has been disabled, after prescribed stations, to

avoid any inconvenience to reserved passengers.
Assistant Commercial Manager (HQ) of SWR N Rajkumar has issued order to all three divisions and commuters have been got this facility in different routes of SWR zonal over 31 coaches. He said that earmarking of sleeper coaches as 'Unreserved Second Class' over identified trains and distance of Hubballi, Bengaluru and Mysuru divisions to accommodate substantial volume of passengers by some routes has implemented from February 16. 'By this initiative, we have met long pending demand of unreserved sleeper class from the commuters' he added.
Rajkumar shared that they have conducted proper study and assessed the six month's data before declaring unreserved sleeper coaches. `For example Hosapete to Hubballi in Hampi Express train met good response from commuters; most of passengers had been travelled in sleeper coaches, because those coachers were empty and normal coaches used to see huge crowed. We have selected 7 express trains for this new scheme for comfortable journey of them' he asserted.
He further clarified, ` Passengers travelling in other than prescribed coaches will have to pay the difference of fare between the two classes. If they travel in coaches declared as `unreserved sleeper', they need not pay single paisa between given section of trains. For instance, if an unreserved passenger travels board in S-1 coach of train number: 16591, he has to pay difference amount. If travels in coaches from S-6 to S-9 in same train between Hubballi-Hosapete section, he need not pay any additional amount. Even season ticket holders can also travel in such prescribed coaches of prescribed trains between notified section'.
'We had demanded many times to declare some sleeper coaches as unreserved for comfortable journey, now SWR has responded to our demand and has taken good decision through declaring four sleeper coaches as unreserved recently' expressed Babulal Jain, Member of Hubballi Zonal Railway Users Committee.

BENGALURU: Taking a major step towards monetising railway assets and upgrading passenger amenities, Indian Railways on Wednesday invited tenders for development of vacant railway land in the vicinity of 23 railway stations. This includes Bangalore Cantonment and Yeshwantpur in Bangalore Railway Division.
Briefing newspersons at the Divisional Railway Manager’s office before Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the ‘Station Redevelopment Programme’ (announced in this year’s Railway budget) from New Delhi through video link, General Manager of South Western Railway, A K Gupta, said a total of 22.5 acres in Bengaluru will be offered for private development.
“This

will include 20 acres located 4 km from Yeshwantpur station and 2.25 acres near Cantonment station, located along Thimmaiah Road connecting Queen’s Road,” he said.
Tenders were floated for commercial development of these places on Wednesday and the last date for accepting bids is June 1. The Swiss Challenge Method, which is more transparent than the regular tendering process, has been adopted.

“The bidder can have any commercial venture in railway land, which will be offered on a 45-year lease. Simultaneously, the two stations need to be provided with all conceivable passenger amenities and facilities so that they become iconic ventures,” he added.
Fifteen more stations in South Western Railway will be developed. These include Belagavi, Ballari, Vijayapura, Davangere, Dharwad, Hosapete, Hubballi, Krishnarajapuram, Shivamogga, Sai Prashanti Nilayam, Vasco Da Gama, Bangarpet and Bengaluru city (Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna) stations, Gupta said.
In the second phase, bids for redevelopment of 100 stations will be put out in June. In the third and final phase in December, 250-plus stations will be covered.
Suresh Prabhu, in a speech telecast live across many railway divisions, said that the space near railway stations falls under the “most valuable real estate in the country.”
“The entire Stations Redevelopment Programme was targeting `1 lakh crore to be obtained by monetising 2,200 acres of land across 100 cities across the country,” he said. Altogether 400-plus A1 and A stations would be developed.

BENGALURU: The huge allocation of funds towards railway safety in Karnataka and electrification of tracks stand out in the 2017-2018 budget. Passenger amenities though have been sidetracked. The details of allocations for the South Western Railway Zone were made public following the release of the Pink Book in Parliament on Friday.
An amount of Rs 724.26 crore has been allocated for the Rail Safety Fund (Rashtriya Rail Sanraksh Kosh) out of the overall budgetary allocation of Rs 3,174 crore, giving a boost to passenger safety in the light of a spate of derailments across the country in the last few months.

the increase in allocation, a statement from the South Western Railway said, “For the year 2016-2017, an amount of Rs 445.15 crore was allocated for the Safety Fund.”
There have been no new trains sanctioned though there was a demand for at least one additional train on the packed Bengaluru-Mysuru section.
The Rs 1,211.75 crore sanctioned for electrification works across the zone is a big step towards improving the traction (pulling power) of the trains (break-up given in box).
“The diesel-run trains will switch to electric which will ensure efficient running of trains,” said Chief Administrative Officer, South Western Railway, Ashok Gupta.
The only new line sanctioned is between Gadag and Yalvigi which is expected to cost Rs 640 crore.
Another new 98-km line between Shivamogga and Ranebennur has been proposed. However, the Rs 1,700 crore funding for it has to be mobilised by forming a joint venture with the state government.
A sum Rs 1,629.6 crore have been sanctioned for ongoing track doubling works. Major allocations among them are Rs 344 crore  for Hotgi-Kudgi-Gadag; Rs 200 crore for Hubballi-Chikkajajur; Rs 140 crore for Arasikere-Tumakuru and Rs 120 crore for Yelahanka-Penukonda lines.

With the beginning of goods train services on the newly laid Hosapete-Kottur-Harihar rail line recently, people of the region are hopeful of getting passenger train services soon.
A goods train is plying on the Kottur-Hosapete route for the first time in the last two decades after it was closed for conversion of track from metre gauge to broad gauge.

held in the first week of June after a track inspection was conducted by Arun Kumar Jain, Divisional Railway Manager, Hubballi Division of South Western Railway in the last week of May.
The Railways proposed to extend the Hosapete-Kottur line up to Harihar to help the development of the hinterland and to connect Hosapete, Hagari Bommanahalli, and Kudligi taluks of Ballari district to the Bengaluru-Hubballi main line.
The extension of the line, apart from linking the east coast (Visakhapatnam) with the west coast (Mangalore port), will also facilitate transportation of coal, iron ore and fertilizer, besides passenger trains towards Dakshina Kannada and Shivamogga.
In 1995, C.K. Jaffer Sherrief, as the then Minister for Railways, laid the foundation stone for gauge conversion and extension of the line up to Harihar. For various reasons, the project moved at a slow pace. However, the stretch between Harihar and Kottur was thrown open for passenger train movement in March 2014 with Mallikarjun Kharge, as the then Railway Minister, flagged off the first train. The stretch between Kottur-Hosapete was yet to be opened for passenger trains.
“Running of goods trains has been successful on the newly laid track. Following demand from the people, we will provide a facility for loading at Hagari Bommanahalli station which will be in addition to the facility already available in Kottur and Amaravati stations,” Rajalingam Basu, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, told The Hindu .
With rail connectivity in place, farmers can now make use of it for transportation of maize, sunflower, groundnuts among other agriculture produce, besides getting fertilizer unloaded at these stations.
