The railway protection force and Thiruvananthapuram railway division authorities have launched a detailed investigation after unidentified miscreants robbed copper wires worth Rs 2 lakh from a newly-built rake that was stationed at Edappally railway station for a few days.
Though senior officers remained tight-lipped, sources from the RPF and railway division said that miscreants cut off copper wires placed below eight compartments, for supplying power to lights, fans and other equipment.Miscreants also broke window glasses of a few compartments and took away the steel taps.
"We are clueless on whether the incident took

place at Edappally station itself. Only seasoned thieves can do this," said a source from electrical department adding that this was the first time such an incident took place in the state.
The train was brought from Integral Coach Factory (ICH), Chennai last week and had been stationed at Edappally for four days till Friday . The authorities had planned to carry out a Suvidha special service using this rake from Kochuveli to Mumbai CST on Saturday at 8.45 am to clear extra rush of passengers in connection with New Year. The train was sent to Kochuveli on Friday afternoon, and the authorities detected the robbery while crosschecking the safety aspects. Since the rake was not fit for service on Saturday, authorities arranged another rake meant for a different service.
Meanwhile, an RPF team from Kochuveli left for Chennai on Saturday evening in connection with the case. "Such combination trains are normally halted for hours or even days in small stations and vacant tracks before it reaches the destination. We have to investigate whether the rake was stopped in any other place before reaching Edappally ," the officer said.
One of the sources from RPF said they carried out a detailed search at the Edappally railway station for clues and a report will be submitted to the higher authorities at the earliest."As per the primary calculations the total loss would come around Rs 6 lakh, as authorities will have to spend a few more lakhs and manpower to repair the rake," said the source.

KOCHI:  A locopilot of the Ernakulam-Bangalore Express, that started off from Ernakulam Junction Station, was suspended after he skipped a signal, near Edappally Railway Station at 5.30 pm, on Wednesday.  Divisional railway manager Sunil Bajpai personally inspected the situation along with divisional safety officer.  Owing to this the train was delayed for at least an hour.
The official immediately suspended the locopilot who stated that he did not see the signal. The train could resume its journey only after another locopilot took over, causing delay to a couple of other trains along the route.

A major accident was averted on Saturday afternoon when seven railway workers travelling on an inspection trolley jumped out and ran away on seeing Mumbai CST-Kanyakumari Jayanthi Janatha Express running into them on the tacks between Kalamassery and Edappally on the outskirts of the city.Loco pilots applied the brake but the train hit the trolley, which broke under the impact. The broken pieces were brought to Edappally railway station later. The loco pilots gave a report on the incident to the station manager and a case has been registered with the railway police. The train was going slowly according to railway officials and the trolley was carrying workers meant for repairs on a parallel track. One of the workers engaged in repair works sustained minor injuries when a broken piece of the trolley fell on his leg. The Jayanthi Jantha resumed its service after a gap of thirty minutes. Monday’s incident in which a 10-year old boy was seriously injured when a palm-sized stone was hurled at the Ernakulam-Madgaon Superfast Express, near Edappally railway station, brings to light the threat posed by anti-social people.
The boy, Adnan Razi, who belongs to Kannur who sustained serious injuries has been hospitalised. Last year, a 19-year-old boy was booked after he threw stones at a train which damaged the locopilot’s cabin.
Residents said that incidents of stone pelting along the Vaduthala-Perandoor Canal stretch that leads to the Edappally railway station were quite common.

Three years ago, a group of children playing with an air gun pulled the trigger which hit the loco pilot of a moving train and injured him, 4 km off this location.
Schoolchildren are often found loitering on the track during the afternoon hours. There are also reports that the area is a haven for drunkards who reportedly pelt stones at trains for the heck of it. Police officials, investigating the case, said that they suspect the incident took place in drunken revelry.
Several beer bottles were found at the site. Government Railway Police (GRP) officials told ‘City Express’ that 20 minutes after the  stone was thrown at the Erankulam-Madgoan superfast Express, the people had chucked stones at the Ernakulam-bound Duronto Express and damaged the window of an A/C coach.
“The Ernakulam-Madgaon Express was running on the higher track while the Duronto Express was on the lower track. We suspect that the assailants had thrown the stone from the higher side. Since nobody was injured when a stone was thrown at the Duronto Express, the incident was reported only when the train stopped at the Ernakulam railway station,” GRP officials said.
The stones which were used by the assailants have been seized from the two trains. The youths in the area were grilled by the railway police. The North police, Kalamassery police, Railway Protection Force are also involved in the investigation.
Residents have called for tight police patrolling along the Vaduthala-Perandoor rail route leading to the Edappally railway station.
“The deserted area is  ideal for anti-social people. Two years ago, such incidents were rampant but stopped when police began patrolling. After the police withdrew from the duty citing practical reasons, no untoward incidents were reported till recently. “Though anti-social people are back, the situation was calm, except for Monday’s incident,” said a Vaduthala resident, Sanil K.

At a time when Edappally is growing as a prime location, the Edappally Railway, Station located near Ponekkara which witnesses a huge flow of passengers on a daily basis, remains highly neglected.
Demanding that the Railway officials take concerted efforts to upgrade the station, the Edappally Vikasana Samithi members and the Ponekkara Welfare Association held a dharna in front of the station on Sunday.
The dharna continued for two hours. Edappally Vikasana Samithi president Advocate R Padmanabhan Nair demanded the authorities to allow stop for all important trains at the station.

If the Venad Express, Mangalore Express and  the newly introduced Guruvayoor-Punalur Express via Kottayam are given halts here, the passengers would be benefited hugely as they would not have to get down unnecessarily at the Ernakulam Junction and Town stations. The congestion on the roads could easily be avoided,” hesaid.
He added that the Divisional Railway Manager had earlier promised that concerted efforts would be made to allow stops for major trains at the station.
Meanwhile, the Railways is yet to ensure that there are sufficient amenities for the passengers at the station. “ On most days, the rest rooms are locked. Also, there are no bathroom facilities for the commuters,” the members of the Samithi said.
They added that the authorities concerned  should ensure that the quality of road leading to the western entry of the station where the new counter is located.
“ The passengers are finding it difficult to access the counter. Also, the Railways should open reservation facilities at the counter as had been promised earlier by the Divisional Railway Manager,” the members added.
The second platform lacks proper roofing facilities. Also, the authorities should ensure that the work of the RoB is constructed at the earliest, they demanded. Opposition councillor Mahesh Kumar, members of the SNDP yogam and others participated at the protest.
