Kapurthala:
In sync with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's `Make in India' campaign, the Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, is contemplating to roll out the first rake of coaches which can run at a speed of 200km per hour. While its design has been prepared, RCF has already ordered a prototype of upgraded brake system, the most crucial component in this high speed train.
“If things go as planned, after getting the prototype of the new brake system, we shall prepare a prototype of the new coach by December. After the in-house testing, the first rake

can be rolled out by the end of this financial year or in the beginning 2016-17 fiscal,“ said RCF general manager Alok Dave who is also holding the charge of RCF, Rae Bareli.
Pointing out other major changes in the high speed coaches, he revealed that those bogeys would have automatic sliding doors on the sides, improved design of the vesti bule area, which would end the externally visible gap between the coaches, LED TVs, WiFi and a better passenger information system. “According to the design prepared for the upgraded disc brake system, it would have steel brake disc and sintered brake pads,“ Dave said.
He said as RCF had already rolled out a Shatabadi train rake of 17 coaches, which can run at a speed of 160kmph and which is still being tested on the tracks, they had also manufactured an observation car which can run at the same speed for testing the railway track and overhead electric equipments. The 160kmph rake has automatic compartment doors and GPS-based public information system.
Dave manager said they had rolled out 1,582 coaches in 2014-15 against the target of 1,500 and those also included 102 coaches for RCF.He said that they were also starting large scale manufacturing of non-AC LHB coaches which would be used in high speed trains.

engineers in consultations with RDSO (Research Development and Standard Organisation) had made some changes in these coaches in designing of coupler system for more smoother ride than Shatabdi and Rajdhani coaches, installation of smoke and fire detection system and automatic sliding of inner doors besides Passengers information system.
The GM said the approximate cost of one high speed coach would be between Rs 2.25-2.50 crore. He said that high speed coaches manufactured in RCF for Shatabdi and Rahdhani express trains are capable of running at the optimum speed of 160 kilometer per hour. The GM said railways has selected ten routes on which high speed trains would run as announced by railway minister in his budget speech.
Initially speed of these trains would be 160 kilometer on select rail routes and gradually it would be enhanced up to 200 kilometer after upgrading the signalling system, barricading the area, he said. The railway board and officials of railway department had already conducted a trial on these coaches on Delhi?Agra section at a speed of 160 kilometer and covered the 200 kilometer distance in 99 minutes a few days ago, a railway official said.
The RCF has also started working on the high speed coaches capable of running at a speed of 200 kilometer per hour by making some changes like automatic outer doors, changes in braking system with the provision of electro pneumatic brakes, noise reduction with better sound insulation, provision of TV set on the back of every seat in the executive chair cars and WI-Fi system besides improved vestibules, the GM said.
He said that high speed coach capable of running at 200 kilometer per hour would be rolled out by June next year.

Kapurthala: No more messy loo! Railways to set up bio-toilets in all new train coaches Bhaskar News   |  Jan 06, 2014, 16:26PM IST
Chandigarh/Kapurthala: After receiving persistent complaints of stinking toilets and unhygienic work environment at coach maintenance depots, Railways has set up a bacteria generation plant at the Rail Coach Factory here at Kapurthala and will to meet the requirement of bio toilets in trains.  "The Railways has been working on generating anaerobic bacteria system to be used in bio toilets in coaches," said Pramod Kumar, GM, RCF.   Bio-toilet, an eco-friendly concept of human waste disposal developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), will soon replace the conventional open discharge toilets that came under criticism from different quarters

for manual scavenging and posing a threat of infections/insanitation on railway premises.   In an attempt to minimise the menace of open discharge of faecal matter at railway stations and inhabited areas, the railway has introduced Germany’s Linke Hoffman Busch model — a closed discharge toilet system that closes the outlet in coaches when the train speed come down to 30 kmph, said the GM.   "This prevents night soil litter on railway station premises. However, the problem with this model is that when trains reach the destination, the human waste collection has to be discharged in coach maintenance depots, making the workplace unhygienic," informed Kumar.   "This is an innovative method where consortium of dormant bacteria in capsule form decomposes faecal matter when dropped in toilet tanks. The toilet tanks have to be emptied in the maintenance yards. The system segregates waste through different chambers and finally releases a harmless/odourless liquid safe to the environment," he said.   "This is a fairly successful model that will be introduced in all new and existing coaches in a phased manner," he added.

While those going from the Jalandhar side will have to take a 1.5 km detour, those coming from the Kapurthala side will have to travel 2.5 km more compared to the previous route.
The problem that most commuters faced today pertained to the choking of traffic in these villages owing to the less width of thte diverted routes.
Traffic cops were deployed by the Kapurthala police at all diversion points. SP Kulwant Singh and DSP Balwinder Singh were at the spot to ensure proper compliance.
The PWD is getting the bridge constructed at a cost of nearly Rs 25 crore.
