An alert gangman attached to the Kollam railway station, after noticing a fissure on a rail track, prevented a possible accident when he quickly gave a red flag signal and brought the on-coming Mumbai-Kanyakumari Express to a halt near the outer area of the station on Friday morning.
The train was approaching the Kollam station through that track. The gangman Chandrakumar noticed the crack during his routine track check duty. The train was let through the track 15 minutes later when technicians inspected and rectified the fissure.

In name it is an express, but actually it is a passenger train.I think, in future number of stops should increases to nearly 25-40.For what purpose railway giving so much stops for express trains? Also Loop line stations consume more time than other stations.

Couple of months back, 16302/01 was given temporary stoppage @ STKT where both platforms are on loop line. As such Venad runs late; now Railways have an additional excuse for its late running.
Wish they designed stations in such a way that platforms are on the main line & not on loops; wish they constructed more stations like PVRD/AMPA where both up & down platforms lie on mainline.
Also the scope of increasing maximum permitted speed on loop lines from current 15 kmph to atleast 30(am not sure if this can be done
...
due to technical reasons) should be explored; former DRM/TVC did try to increase the loop line speed, but didn't succeed.
PUU - PGT Express is going to be a glorified passenger; wish they classified it as FP so that ticket fares will be less!!

Survey claims 86% of participants support the project
The majority of people in the State support the proposed 430-km high speed railway line (HSR) between Kochuveli in Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur, if a survey conducted in 11 districts is any indication.
The survey held for Kerala High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (KHSRCL), a public limited company floated by the government to execute the project, has found that 86% of the participants supported the project.
The

survey was conducted using the systematic random methodology by Gurgaon-based Centre for Forecasting & Research (Cfore) between November 23, 2016 and January 14 this year. The findings of the survey that covered 110 Assembly constituencies and the report had been submitted to the KHSRCL, chief executive of Cfore, Premchand Palety, said.
Hassle-free travel
The Rs. 1,27,849-crore project is aimed at making travel hassle-free and at reducing congestion on State roads.
In all, 73% of the respondents were aware of the project and 88% of them approved of it.
Mr. Paelty said 82% of those who were unaware approved of it when the interviewer explained it to them. The approval rating was over 80%.
Reduced travel time
Reducing the time taken to travel across the State and the air pollution and the corridor turning a catalyst for development are the advantages. Those who opposed the project said large-scale acquisition of land and displacement of families would be needed.
13,447 interviewed
A total of 100-120 voters from each Assembly segment in the districts were interviewed. The respondents were randomly selected from the voters’ list using a special software. In all, 13,447 people, one voter from each household, were interviewed.
Through the survey, the authorities are trying to counter the opposition that may come up against land acquisition and dissent against development projects.
As much as 1,155.57 hectares of private land has to be acquired, 3,868 residential/commercial structures relocated, and 36,923 trees felled as per the DPR prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.
In 45 minutes in Kochi
With trains running at a maximum speed of 300 km per hour, a journey to Kollam will take only 20 minutes, Kochi 45 minutes, Kozhikode 90 minutes, and Kannur 120 minutes. Kollam, Chengannur, Kottayam, Kochi, Thrissur, Valancherry, Kozhikode, and Kannur are the stations proposed.

It is tough to materialise in Kerala. Land acquisition is not at all easy. Lot of objections for the projects are exisitng, especially from those who will lose the land.

Thrust on ongoing rail projects
S. Anil Radhakrishnan
The Hindu
Completion of sanctioned and ongoing railway projects – doubling from Kayamkulam junction via Kottayam and Alappuzha and Angamaly-Sabari Rail – has been given thrust in the Rs. 1,206-crore outlay for rail network in Kerala for 2017-18 in the Union Budget.
Of
...
the outlay, the ongoing doubling works from Kayamkulam junction via Kottayam and Alappuzha have been given Rs. 313 crore and the Sabari Rail Rs. 213 crore. The two projects have cornered 51.26% of the outlay.
The remaining 48.74% of the outlay has gone for passenger amenities improvement, track renewal, gauge conversion, yard remodelling, signalling and telecommunication, and road safety works in level crossings.
The outlay to the State has seen a 18.92% increase when compared to the Rs. 1,014.06-crore outlay in the Railway budget 2016-17.
The survey for the Thalassery-Mysuru railway line is the only new project from Kerala that has figured in the Pink Book that gives a break-up of the outlay of funds allotted to Railways. The coaching terminal at Nemom aimed at decongesting Thiruvananthapuram Central has failed to make it to Pink Book, despite the groundwork.
The 35-km Guruvayur-Tirunavaya line figures in the capital investment programme to be executed on cost-sharing basis with Kerala through the joint venture company Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd.
A sum of Rs. 297.20 crore has been earmarked for eight Road Over Bridges, 13 Road Under Bridges and subways in Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad divisions. Of Rs. 297.20 crore, the State’s share is Rs. 140.57 crore.
Passenger amenities
Passenger amenities have been given Rs. 25 crore as against the Rs. 20 crore last year. For the doubling of the 85-km Thiruvananthapuram - Kanyakumari railway line, which is already electrified, Rs. 50 crore has been allocated.
Funds have also been earmarked for the completion of the Kozhikode-Mangaluru doubling, stage II at the Kochuveli terminal, one additional pitline and two stabling lines in Ernakulam and rake unloading facilities for 20 BCN wagons at Nilambur road.

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 26 () As part of its programme to upgrade facilities for rail users, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu said here today that 200 more stations and some additional trains would be provided with Wi-Fi in 2017.
Dedicating six Wi-Fi facilities to rail users at Kannur, Ernakulam and Kollam at a function here, he said 100 stations had been fitted with Wi-Fi this year and the target was to double this number in 2017.
"More trains will also would be provided with Wi-Fi next year," he said.
"The

objective is to have Wi-Fi facility in all railway stations in small cities and towns," he said.
The Minister said steps were also on to construct escalators in stations, he said.
Welcoming the Kerala government's decision to sign a Joint Venture with Railways for development projects in the state, he said that as partners, the railways would be developed in the state.
"The Centre and state will have equity in the venture and funds for the projects will be raised through market borrowings with the consent of the state government," he said.
The resources spent under the JV would be in addition to funds earmarked in the Railway budget, he added.
Stating that investment in railway infrastructure can bring development to its optimum level in Kerala, Prabhu said he had asked some banks to prepare a business plan for the state.
Prabhu admitted that there was a lack of railway investment in Kerala and said the NDA government's move was to reverse that trend.
Referring to remittances to the state from Non-Resident Keralites, he said even they could invest in railway projects.
"They can develop a railway station", he said, adding that the key objective was to join hands for development.
The Railways was also looking out for resources other than its normal revenue.
They were also looking into the possibility of coverting its hospitals as medical college hospitals, he said.
Chief Minister Pinrayi Vijayan and G Sudhakaran, PWD Minister and in charge of Railways were among those present.
