Visakhapatnam: Many parts of the district received heavy rain on Monday under the influence of a low pressure that formed over Bay of Bengal on Sunday.
Train services on the Kottavalasa-Kirandul (KK) railway line were also interrupted as boulders fell on the track due to rains in Visakha Agency. Officials from the Waltair division of the East Coast Railway rushed to the spot and restored the services. Train services on this sector were disrupted for nearly two hours.
"Boulders falling on the KK line is a common event for us during the monsoon.

We always keep the requisite emergency equipment ready so that the situation is brought under control at the earliest and train services are restored," said a senior railway official.
Meanwhile, weathermen at the Cyclone Warning Centre (CWC), Visakhapatnam, said the city received 14 mm of rainfall and the airport received 16.4 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. They further said the low pressure area lying over west central and adjoining north-west Bay of Bengal off south Odisha coast and north coastal Andhra Pradesh did not turn into a well-marked low pressure till Monday. Many parts of coastal AP will receive moderate to heavy rains on Tuesday, the CWC officials said.

Naresh, a government employee living in Anakapalle, and Achari, a teacher living in Vizianagaram, who commute to the city daily for work, find the lack of local trains a curse for commuters.
“Though there are trains from Anakapalle to Visakhapatnam, they do not match the actual demand. I have to board either 57271 BZA- Rayagada Passenger or 57255 Kakinada - Vizag EMU, which are already packed to capacity with hardly any space to get in,” says Naresh.
Mr. Achari travels from Vizianagaram to Visakhapatnam every day. He boards 78531 Vizianagaram-Visakhapatnam DEMU, which is

packed to capacity with hardly any space to stand comfortably leave alone sitting in the train.
Both Naresh and Achari feel that there should be MEMU s (Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit) between Tuni/Anakapalle to Vizianagaram via Visakhapatnam after every 1 hour and a few services can be extended up to Annavaram one side (as it would meet the requirement of pilgrims travelling to Sri Satyanarayana Swamy temple) and Srikakulam on other side (as it would be useful to those going to Arasavalli and Srikurmam temples).
The introduction of the local trains would help in reducing the load on the National Highway and minimising road accidents. This is not all, the middle class and the poor will be saved the hassle of paying three or four times the fare for travel in buses.

Move to de-link KK, KR lines decried SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT COMMENT   ·
URV president S. S. Shiva Sankar addressing a press conference in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday
The proposal to de-link the KK line and KR line from Waltair Division, while creating the new railway zone, and apportioning them to East Coast Railway would be opposed tooth and nail, said Uttarandhra Rakshana Vedika (URV) president S.S. Shiva Sankar.

existing railway Division was bifurcated at the time of creating new zones in the past. Waltair Division, which is among the top five revenue earning divisions in the country, if bifurcated, would make the new zone financially unviable. The MPs from Andhra Pradesh should exert pressure on the Railway Ministry to prevent further split of Waltair Division, he told a media conference here on Tuesday.
The jurisdiction of Waltair Division extends over 1,105 route km. covering AP, Odisha and Chhattisgarh States. The four main arteries of the Division are: Duvvada-Visakhapatnam-Palasa – 213 RKM, Vizianagaram-Singapur Road – 137 RKM, Kottavalasa-Kirandul (KK Line) 446 RKM, Koraput-Rayagada – 164 RKM, Kottavalasa-Simahachalam – 22 RKM, Bobbili-Salur 18 RKM, miscellaneous Goods routes – 37 km. and Naupada – Gunupur – 91 km. (total 1105 km).
Mr. Shiva Sankar said that Waltair Division poses a great heritage being an old Division, which has over 700 acres of railway land, various railway establishments like the largest Diesel Loco Shed in Indian Railways and an Electric Loco Shed. KK line and KR lines are the major earning lines in the Division as they carry freight for various industries.
The KK line, which comes under a single section, would pose operational problems, if bifurcated. The control of two different zonal railways on a single section would also result in administrative problems, he added.
Replying to a query, he said that a memorandum was being sent to the Railway Minister not to allow bifurcation of Waltair Division.

with this Kirandul Kottavalasa line Vizagites are asking for new zone with VSKP HQ's...but neither EcoR nor the new zone can understand the problems of maoist attack & to improve the situation there...people sitting inside the comforts of air conditioned rooms in VSKP will continue to enjoy the revenue earned by iron ore traffic without caring for the people of this naxalite area.

You missed a very vital point:
Out of 445 km 330 km is in CG and this section alone earns more than 1000 Cr Rs one of highest in IR.
If new zone happens and if it happens on state boundary considerations than Division boundary restructuring is very much needed.
In IR income CG contribution is far far greater and no one talks

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Waltair division of the East Coast Railways (ECoR) has piled up losses of around Rs 50 crore this month due to the suspension of passenger services at various railway stations, particularly Visakhapatnam railway station, for nearly 10 days due to various factors as well as slowdown in cargo movement on its money spinner Kirandul-Kottavalasa railway line.
This includes nearly Rs 40 crore losses due to lower freight movement on the KK line and another Rs 10 crore due to passenger traffic disruptions, said railway sources. Daily about 50,000 passengers travel to various parts of the country from the division, which covers the three north coastal districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam, besides a few parts of neighbouring Odisha.

officials attributed the losses to the Samaikyandhra stir by Seemandhra electricity board employees on October 7, besides the two natural calamities -- Cyclone Phailin that hit north coastal AP on October 12 and the torrential rains under the influence of northeast monsoon from October 21 to 27. Due to disruptions, more than 20,000 passengers travel from Vizag alone. But many passengers could not utilize Indian Railways services for nearly 10 days due to the disruptions in train traffic due to these three key reasons this month.
Admitting to the losses, Waltair divisional manager Anil Kumar said the losses would be more than Rs 10 crore just on account of disruption of passenger traffic. "I have instructed my staff to prepare a report on the losses to the division due to passenger train disruptions. In terms of freight traffic, though the division did not face any track damages, particularly on the Kirandul-Kottavalasa railway line like it did last year due to Cyclone Nilam, it suffered losses on the KK line due to lack of cargo movement during the torrential rains as no mining activity was carried out by National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) at Bailadilla in Chhattisgarh during the period," he said.
"The division, which has 38 railway stations under the three north coastal districts in addition to a couple of stations in neighbouring Odisha, on an average earns Rs 1 crore daily from passenger traffic. But because of disruptions for nearly 10 days due to the protests and track damages due to rains and cyclone Phailin, the division roughly incurred nearly Rs 10 crore losses from passenger traffic," a senior railway official said.
The Indian Railways regulated 17 key trains, including 12 cancellations and five short-terminations, due to the strike by the electricity employees of APGenco, APTransco and Eastern Power Distribution Company of AP Limited (EPDCL) to protest against the bifurcation of the state. The supply of 25KV power to the electric traction overhead was suspended due to the strike. As a result, all the 17 trains could not move on the Chennai-Howrah main railway line passing through Vizag, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam Road under Waltair division in the first week of this month, a senior railway official said.
While the main railway track between Palasa and Ichchapuram railway stations in Srikakulam district were damaged due to rains and cyclone Phailin, the railway line was also damaged at Yelamanchili and Narsingapalli railway station limits in Visakhapatnam district due to the recent torrential rains.
The railways were forced to suspend around 61 trains passing through Visakhapatnam to various destinations for 10 days -- on October 7 due to no power, from October 11 to 13 due to cyclone and from October 24 to October 29 due to rains. Most of the trains were diverted via either Vijayawada or Vizianagaram railway stations when the railway traffic was suspended between Palasa and Ichchapuram due to heavy rains caused by Cyclone Phailin as well as the northeast monsoon.
