Madurai remained largely calm on Monday evening but normal life was affected for those who were travelling as most of the bus services were abruptly withdrawn. Only two stray incidents of stone pelting on buses were reported in Narimedu and Anna Nagar police station limits.
As soon as the news of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s deteriorating health started trickling, many of the shops in the city began downing the shutters. Panic button pressed by a few television channels late in the evening only mounted more tension among the common man and traders.
Within few

minutes, most of the shops and commercial establishments, including eateries, cinema theatres and the ubiquitous tea-stalls were hurriedly closed down. Even the fruit market on the Vakkil New Street was deserted.
A few vehicles that were hurriedly rushing towards the destination in the evening dwindled to a fewer within few minutes as darkness set in.
Good number of police personnel were deployed in front of the Apollo Hospital at K.K. Nagar as a precautionary measure. Even the women staff were leaving earlier than their scheduled working time.
“Since there was news of bus services being withdrawn, we allowed the women staff to leave early,” a hospital employee said.
More passengers started rushing towards the Madurai railway junction with the hope of continuing their journey without any break. The queues at the booking counters were unusually longer.
“I had reserved a seat in an omni bus back to Chennai. But, I did not get any response to anxious phone calls made to the enquiry of the omni bus operator. Hence, I am now standing in the queue to get an unreserved ticket to somehow reach Chennai,” said T. Kanagaraj (23).
The IT professional had come to Rajapalayam on Saturday to attend his friend’s marriage.
Inside the station, the platforms were already crowded by 7 p.m. while the Pandian Superfast Express was scheduled to leave only at 8.40 p.m. The queue system for passengers to get into the unreserved tickets formed with their luggage was longer on Platform one.
Similarly, there was huge demand for the packed food sold on the platforms.
They were selling like hot cakes as panic-stricken people started buying multiple packets of food and water bottles fearing non-availability en route.
Meanwhile, the city police posted over 1,100 police officials and men at all arterial roads and important junctions, and crowded places.

Madurai: Pulling up the Railway for scaling down unreserved coaches, including one for women, in a popular express train bound for Chennai while introducing LHB coaches, Madras High Court Bench in Madurai on Wednesday directed authorities to file a report on November 7 on the matter.
The court, hearing a PIL by an advocate, directed Railways to submit its view on attaching more general coaches in the Madurai-Chennai Pandian Express train.Noting that ordinary passengers who cannot afford heavy bus fare were travelling in general compartments in trains and the railway service was meant for poor people, the court sought to know what they would do if the general compartments were removed under the pretext of introducing new coaches.

petitioner submitted that the train used to have 24 coaches. But from August 15 last, when the new modern LHB coaches, designed on German technology, were introduced, only 22 coaches were attached.
A women's coach and a general coach had been removed, which has affected the passengers travelling by general compartments, he said adding non-provision of women's coach was against railway rules.
Counsel who appeared for the Railway submitted that the LHB coaches were longer than the conventional coaches and only 22 coaches could be attached in proportion to the length of the platform.
If more coaches should be attached, the platform length should be extended, he said.
The court directed the railways to submit a report on the plea for attaching the two coaches.

Five water vending machines (WVMs) were inaugurated at Madurai railway junction from where rail passengers can buy water treated under reverse-osmosis process at an affordable cost.
The WVMs, put up by Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), could be operated with coins. Besides, they would also be manned.
After inaugurating the new facility, Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Kumar Garg said each of the machine cost Rs. 14 lakh. It would also serve cold water. “Passengers can buy water in their own containers at a cost of Re 1 for 300 ml. The

cost for five litres is Rs. 20. However, the passengers will have to pay a reasonably cost for buying containers,” Mr. Garg said.
A glass of 300 ml was Rs. 2 and bottle of five litres was Rs. 25, he added. The project was aimed at providing hygienic water for the passengers. Madurai would have a total of six WVMs, he said.
Four similar machines have already been installed in Tirunelveli railway junction. The IRCTC has proposed to put up these machines at Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Rameswaram, Kovilpatti, Dindigul, Rajapalayam, Tenkasi, Paramakudi and Karaikudi.
The machines had capacity of produce 200 litres of purified water in one hour. The quality would be closely monitored, said ITCTC Deputy General Manager V. Ganapathy.
Executive lounge
Mr. Ganapathy said the IRCTC had proposed to set up an executive lounge and food plaza at the railway junction soon.
The executive lounge would be an air-conditioned hall where the passengers could be provided with facilities such as computer, internet and copier machines. “The passengers will have to pay a fixed tariff of around Rs. 300 for two or three hours and they would be provided with a meal,” he said. “The idea is that the passengers need not go out of the station premises for such services,” Mr. Ganapathy said.
Divisional Commercial Manager (Coordination) Guganesan said the executive lounge had been proposed near the foot overbridge.
Madurai Station Manager N.D. Prem Kumar was present.

Madurai: The Madurai - Chennai Egmore Pandian Express left Madurai junction on Monday night fully decorated with brand new Linke Hofmann Busch rake with a mixed response from passengers. While passengers from reserved coaches were quite thrilled about the looks and comfort of the new rake, passengers from unreserved coaches were agitated since the new rake had only two unreserved coaches in place of the four unreserved coaches including a ladies compartment in conventional rake.
There was a lot of commotion among the passengers in those coaches. A Guruvammal, 35, from Madurai was travelling to Chennai and she could not plan her journey in reserved compartment since it was a sudden trip, she said. "There is not even a ladies compartment and

I am squeezed amidst a huge crowd. How could women travel like this for such a long distance," she rued.
T Rajagopal from Chennai had to make an unplanned trip for his work. "I never thought that the train will be so much crowded," he said.
On the other hand, there was euphoria at platform number 1 since many passengers from reserved coaches were stunned by the beauty of LHB rake and began to take quick selfies with the train in the background on its maiden journey. "It appears so executive style. Even sleeper coaches are spacious and comfortable like air-conditioned ones," quipped Ravi from a sleeper coach.
Divisional railway manager Sunil Kumar Garg inspected the coaches before he flagged off the train. "Unreserved coaches carry a huge number of passengers," he remarked and added that he will submit a report to railways in this regard.
According to division officials, the coaches have a capacity to accommodate about 72 passengers in each AC-3 coach as against 64 passengers in other AC-3 conventional coaches. Similarly, the number of berths is more in LHB AC-2 and AC-1 coaches.
The newly-introduced Pandian express will have extra 44 berths in 2-A, 32 berths 3-A and 8 berths in each sleeper class coaches. In AC coaches, LHB ones are fitted with microprocessor-controlled high-capacity air conditioning system, which gives passengers better comforts during summer and winter seasons, officials said.

Don't think so. When railways made 13 coach train to 21 coach rake train in one budget announcement why is it not possible to make 24-26 within a year?
I am not proposing anything new. This was made announcement in budget. Railways would have done feasibility before announcing it in budget.

length of sidings+length of platforms is an issue.
Had the platforms/yard lines already been long enough to handle 30 coaches then increasing to 26 coach wouldn't be an issue, in that case only the production capacity of coaches would be a limiting factor, this isn't the case sadly and in many cases trains barely fit on Pf when 24 coach long.
there are certain PF's though which have heard have been extended, so the process may not take very long, but instantly it won't happen.
it

Even on important stations like LKO, out of 7 only 4 platforms are capable to accommodate a 24 coach ICF or 22 coach LHB and here are talking about 26 coach Rake. It will definitely need major infrastructural overhaul.

this is true for many major stations.
Increasing length of PF isn't just a simple matter of extending PF length, lot of work goes in making new turn outs, relaying the cables (interlocking) connected to signals on turn outs, changing position of signals itself etc. the whole process can be time consuming, especially if done in major cities with busy schedules.

Madurai Division of Southern Railway has sought adjustment of timings of trains post completion of track doubling between Dindigul and Villupuram, according to Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Kumar Garg.
Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Mr. Garg said the running time of trains between Madurai and Chennai would be reduced by 45 minutes to over one hour on completion of the project that was expected by the fiscal end.
Stating that double line between Chennai Egmore and Madurai would help running of additional trains, he said the trains could be speeded up.

said both Madurai and Tiruchi divisions had appealed to the zonal headquarters for reducing the buffer period permitted in the present system of operation of trains in single line.
“We do not want the trains to arrive early to their destinations and then wait outside the stations due to the buffer timing,” he said.
Senior Divisional Operations Manager R. Senthil Kumar said the adjustment would be in either allowing early arrival of trains at both ends or late departure from the stations, he said.
Mr. Garg said operation of a shadow train for Pandian Superfast Express could be possible after completion of track doubling.
“However, new train services will have to terminate at Tambaram that is being readied as the next terminal,” he said.
Janani Sewa
Madurai Railway Division had made available Janani Sewa, children’s menu at the catering units, Mr. Sunil Kumar Garg said.
He said hot water, hot milk, milk bottles and baby food supplements would be available at the units for the benefit of the babies travelling on trains.
Similarly, e-catering facility of Indian Railway Catering and Toursim Corporation commenced at Madurai railway station.
“Train passengers could choose from a variety of food items available on the menu of IRCTC website www.ecatering.irctc.co.in,” he said.
People could place orders over the website or by calling over toll-free number1800-1034-139 or send SMS to 139. Passengers need to provide their PNR number at the time of booking and the food would be delivered to the passengers on the train arriving at the railway station, he said.
Online booking of retiring rooms would be introduced at Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Virudhunagar soon, he added.
Eight pairs
Eight pairs of passengers trains had been augmented with an additional second class coach each.
From October 1, Train No. 16713/16714 Chennai Egmore-Rameswaram-Chennai Egmore Express would be converted into superfast express and its journey time would be cut down by 30 minutes, he added.

MADURAI: A team of rail fans on Monday celebrated the 39th anniversary of the launch of Nos 12635/12636 Madurai - Chennai Egmore - Madurai Vaigai Superfast Express trains.
The Vaigai Express was launched on August 15, 1977.
"Among the trains, Vaigai Express is our favourite because it was one of the fastest modes of travel between Chennai and Madurai before road transport evolved," said M Arun Pandian, a software professional from Bangalore and ardent rail fan.

and others arrived here on Sunday night. On Monday morning, the team decorated the locomotive of Madurai - Chennai Vaigai Superfast Express before the train departed around 7am. They honoured the loco staff with garlands and presented mementos to them.
Followed by the function, the team travelled in the same train up to Viluppuram where they got down. From Viluppuram, they will travel back to Madurai on the Chennai Egmore - Madurai Vaigai Express.
There will be a cake cutting ceremony when the train reaches Madurai Junction after 9pm.
During the cake cutting ceremony, the rail fans are also planning to honour retired running staff of Vaigai Express as a token of gratitude. "We keep demanding so many trains and amenities from railways every time. Why don't we celebrate what we have at hand," Arun asked.

MADURAI: If the country can swap land on the border with its neighbour Bangladesh, can’t two railway divisions do the same? With allegations of partiality continuing unabated for over three decades, rail users of Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari in Tamil Nadu, and Kollam in Kerala are campaigning to merge these districts to the railway division within their respective states.
Trouble began in 1979 when Thiruvananthapuram division was carved out of Madurai division. At that time, the railway infrastructure in Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari in Tamil Nadu were added to the new division, while that in Kollam remained with Madurai. Under this bifurcation, Tirunelveli-Nagercoil-Kanniyakumari (90 km ) and Nagercoil-Kuzhithurai railway lines (33 km) came under Thiruvananthapuram division, thus starting the allegations of step-motherly treatment.

rail users in south Tamil Nadu accuse Thiruvananthapuram division of operating majority of trains via Kerala, neglecting south Tamil Nadu districts, citing the example of few express trains that originate from Tamil Nadu but traverse through Kerala instead of going through this State.
Island Express from Kanniyakumari to Bangaluru, a direct train that was introduced after a long-standing demand, is one such instance. “Instead of operating the trains via Madurai, the train is being operated via Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad. For us in the south, it means travelling an additional 200 km and spending extra money to reach Bengaluru, just because the train was introduced by the Thiruvananthapuram division,” charges Kanniyakumari District Rail Users Association secretary P Edward Jeni.
The case is same with Tirunelveli-Bilaspur Express, Kanyakumari-Dibrugarh Express and Nagercoil-Shalimar Express, all of which operate via Thiruvananthapuram-Eranakulam-Coimbatore instead of the shorter route via Madurai and Erode.
“Whenever we sought new trains to Nagercoil, we were told there was no additional platforms and new lines. This is because the six trains operated for Kerala’s benefit occupy the platforms and tracks in Nagercoil station, where the infrastructure has not been upgraded in the past 30 years,” Jeni adds.
Congress MLA from Colachel, J G Prince, said most of the people from these districts had to travel to Madurai and Chennai for higher education, medical treatment and business. “Only Madurai division can serve this region better,” he says.
This anger has brought in bad-blood as well. Former principal of Scott Christian College and Chairman of Kanyakumari Institute of Development Studies, D Peter, said matters like this created a sense of mistrust in the minds of the people here. “They feel hurt when they are neglected and only the interest of the people of Kerala is being served,” he said. The politicians from here have failed in understanding the sentiments of the people, Peter alleged.
The annoyance is mutual. Nazar Khan Meera Sahib Asan, a member of Madurai Division Rail Users Consultative Committee from Kollam sub-division, said the Tamil engineering officials from Madurai Division had no knowledge of the geography and topography of Kerala. “When we demand new trains or extension of trains, the officials in Madurai division behave like Tamil Nadu government officials,” Asan alleges.
The Madurai Division neglected Kollam, he adds, pointing out the case of the demand from Kollam MP N K Premachandran to develop eco-tourism at Tenmalai, Ottakkal, Aryankavu and Edapalayam stations. “There has been no sign of it so far,” said Asan, who has come to become a staunch support of merger, just like Jeni, but here with the Thiruvananthapuram Division.
The suggestions have got traction as the gauge conversion work between Sengottai and Punalur is likely to be completed by the year-end. This 88-km railway line is a crucial section, which once was a high revenue generating route since its commissioning in 1904. However, the gauge conversion work has already taken over a decade - apparently because the section is situated in two states. This has prompted a rethink among even a section of railway officials, sources said.
Exchanging railway lines between Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai divisions could be a solution for the troubles faced by these border districts, said an official from the Southern Rail. “But more than being an administrative matter, this is a decision that should be taken politically,” the official added.

Also, Trivandrum Division was carved out mainly from the erstwhile Olavakkot Divn. (Present Palghat Divn.) and only a minimal portion came from Madurai Division. I cannot understand these illogical statements made by the KDRUA...Such statements can create unnecessary controversies...

First of all a long distance train should cater for long distances! In other words a long distance train may cater to an intermediate strech in addition. For example jayanthi janatha is a train which is supposed to cater guntakal ,kadapa ,mantralayam road etc..... in addition to dat it caters Kaniyakumari to trivandrum ,ernakulam etc....
What sort of step motherly treatment do they get? They get a best treatment possible though it may be dumping. The 'perfectly dumped' train is ernad only. People cannot board it at any cost. Parasuram though
...
not at so good timings fro nagercoil it is not so bad either. It is a good intercity from the nagercoil side towards ernakulam,kottayam,etc... madurai division has rameshwaram , tiruchendur, tirunelveli, etc... as better terminals compared to Kaniyakumari and nagercoil to where upon extension of trains they'll lose their share of quota too.
For a long distance train surely an hour of travel is not going to matter at all and always rather than 'shorter distance' , ' shorter time' matters. A simple example is prefering of salem-bangalore via bangarapet than via dharmapuri. Expecting the long distance trains to cater small distances or as intercities is mere absurdity and ridiculousness. In another point of view their so called 'dumping or kerala route' has earned them better connections to kolkata, katra and many places. In their view it has earned them coimbathore, tiruppur, erode connections which they wont get otherwise as shortest route is via dindukkal, namakkal. Through tamilnadu they have thirukkural , Bangalore and the mumbai train. All a place needs is a good train and they need to check the destination and time , not the intermediates! A nagercoil bangalore can cater nagercoil to salem passengers but it should cater nagercoil bangalore primarily. Now the mumbai train via tamilnadu is not a shortest route and shortest is via kerala ! So can we take the train via trivandrum and konkan? Will they agree? Island was from trivandrum and meant for kerala which they had asked for! Now they change their colour!wow! If they can spent extra money on Nagercoil mumbai then why cant on the other trains? Travel Time is just differing by an hour or around! Tirunelveli bilaspur is a proper dumping which is justified, agreed, but even at trivandrum its just a not so bad time! Dibrugarh train will cover the southern capital and timings Show that its not bad enough to be diverted via tamil nadu.
If punalur and nagercoil are exchanged
This will result in maximum extension of sengottai trains to Kollam or trivandrum! That means pothigai and madurai passengers will come and dats all! Madurai division has better terminals as destinations and Kaniyakumari will not or has no more need for a train than one or two short distance trains! The existing services will continue or if withdrawn naturally they'll lose existing connections only! The trivandrum division may dump or may be serving kerala but indirectly Kaniyakumari has only benefits of long distance connections which many places dont have ! So an exchange may not bring in Good results in my opinion!

boss if division carved out means they will take areas from neighboring divisions too. take SA division formation it took area from TPJ MDU and PGT. i dono y they using very old statements which is unnecessary for present situation. and now they getting additional support from punalur. As for punalur concern they have capital connection. chennai connection will be given once GC over. 6 set of trains running. which is maximum in MDU division. i dono how they blaming MDU division that they receive step mother treatment. once GC over we can think of Eco tourism. how IR will develop tourism even before tracks are laid?
