Southern Railway has cleared the decks for constructing an additional foot over bridge at the Mambalam railway station to ease congestion on the existing facility on the suburban platform.
The crowds swell so much during the morning and evening rush hours, especially on weekends, that they become unmanageable and hence the need for another foot overbridge, officials said.
Earlier this month, Southern Railway officials measured land belonging to Southern Railway near the station.

team of staff surveyed the land between the landing of the pedestrian foot overbridge on Ranganathan Street and the Madley Subway.
Officials said the survey was part of preliminary works for constructing the overbridge near the existing one at the northern end of the platform.
“The land for a width ranging between 1.1 metres and 2 metres from the existing compound wall belongs to the Railways. We would need at least eighteen metres of the land between Ranganathan Street and Madley Subway,” officials said.
According to them, the new foot overbridge would be parallel to the existing one, but 10 feet away from it. The idea was to facilitate quicker exit of passengers from the station.
“We first have to identify our land and then fix the boundary first. A tender for the FOB will be floated soon, officials said.
Among the busiest stations in the city’s suburban network, over 25,000 commuters use trains from this station everyday. In addition, over 1.5 lakh non-commuting pedestrians use the existing FOB, officials said. There is another FOB that connects the main line platforms at its northern end with Doraiswamy Subway.

Passing-through trains connecting Alappuzha, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Yeshwantpur and Bengaluru with Dhanbad, Gorakhpur, Barauni, Muzaffurpur, Korba, Shalimar and Guwahati will not touch Chennai Central.
Instead, the trains will halt at Perambur with additional stoppage time between September

The Southern Railway is unable to widen the existing foot overbridge for pedestrians at Mambalam railway station as it has not been able to identify enough space to create a landing for a staircase descending on Ranganathan Street.
More than 25,000 people use suburban trains on an average every day. The number swells during weekends when shoppers from as far as Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur arrive here to visit shops on Usman Road and Ranganathan Street. Further, an estimated 1.5 lakh non-rail passengers use the foot overbridge to reach either sides of the station, Southern Railway sources said.

there has been a demand from suburban train commuters for a second foot overbridge (FOB) for some years now, the railway administration is unable to even widen the existing one. Security agencies too argue that another facility or widening the existing one is necessary. “The stretch between Mambalam and Guindy is very accident-prone. 75 people were killed in train-related accidents in 2013,” a railway police official said. During rush hours, the bridge becomes so crowded that many commuters, especially young men, prefer to walk along the track and then jump over the compound wall and reach Madley Road on the platform’s southern side.
During a modernisation drive following guage conversion, Southern Railway improved FOBs in Mambalam among other stations more than a decade ago. With the explosion of shops in the prime shopping district, the number of commuters reaching Mambalam has risen phenomenally, sources said.
The railway administration built a second FOB on the northern end of the main line platform a few months ago, but officials express their inability to widen the facility on the suburban platform, citing lack of space in Ranganathan Street.
