Seven stations, including Bengaluru, Mysuru and Mangaluru, have the facility
Very soon, 12 more railway stations in the State would get high-speed free Wi-Fi facility for passengers. Seven major stations in the State have the facility now.

with the task of installation of Wi-Fi facility at 400 stations across the country in collaboration with Google, under the Digital India initiative of the Union government.
Presently, free Wi-Fi is available at KRS Bengaluru City, Yeshwantpur, Mysuru, Hubballi, Mangaluru Central, and Kalaburagi stations through RailTel. Belagavi station has got the facility under the MPLAD scheme. With each access point covering up to 40 metres, all platforms, passenger concourse and entrance of the stations are covered, according to South Western Railway’s chief public relations officer E. Vijaya.
In 2017–18, the Railways would provide the facility at Vijayapura, Ballari, Dharwad, Hosapete, and Vasco da Gama (Goa) stations in Hubballi division; Bengaluru Cantonment (to be commissioned shortly), Bangarpet, Kengeri, Krishnarajapuram, and Sri Satya Sai Prasanti Nilayam stations in Bengaluru division; Davangere and Shivamogga Town in Mysuru division, and Mangaluru Junction station in Palakkad division of Southern Railway.
Seventeen more stations would be covered in the next financial year. They are Bagalkot, Gadag, Koppal, Londa, and Toranagallu in Hubballi division; Banaswadi, Hindupur, Hosur, Mandya, Tumakuru, and Yelahanka in Bengaluru division, and Arsikere, Birur, Bhadravathi, Harihar, Haveri and Hassan in Mysuru division.
One can get Internet access with speeds up to 1 Mbps for upload and 3 Mbps for download for the first 30 minutes. Subsequently, the speed reduces to 64 Kbps, but, one could access railway-related sites through WiFi for information such as PNR, and train inquiry, throughout the day.

BENGALURU: The railways and department of urban land transport (DULT), have come to the conclusion that the first phase of the suburban rail project, which links Mandya with Jnanabharathi and Whitefield, is feasible.
After a meeting with railway and DULT officials on Wednesday, Bengaluru development minister KJ George said: "We have asked RITES - a rail consultant company - to submit a detailed project report to the government in two to three days."
Railway minister Suresh Prabhu had announced the project, estimated to cost Rs 9,000 crore, in the 2016-17 railway budget. Over

the past few years, the government has been granting funds to get a DPR on the suburban rail network around Bengaluru. In 2015, chief minister Siddaramaiah announced Rs 10 crore to be given to RITES. However, no progress has been made as far as developing the network, one that could turn out to be lighter on the pocket than other modes of transport.
The plan includes railway lines from Karnativeera Sangoll i Rayanna (Bengaluru City) station to Whitefield via Byappanahalli, and to Kengeri, Yeshwantpur and Doddaballapur. However, the plan to operate electric multiple units / diesel electric multiple unit (EMU/DEMU) coaches, and expanding the network to the city's outskirts is yet to take off.

Train hits vintage jeep parked for photoshoot
Passengers of Mangala Express had a narrow escape on Saturday morning when the train hit a jeep, parked on the tracks for photoshoot, near Basavanapura in Ramanagaram district, about 45 km from Bengaluru.
The train, with over 700 passengers, was travelling at a speed of 50 km per hour, from Mysuru to Bengaluru, when the incident occurred at 7.25 a.m.

youth from Bengaluru allegedly entered the restricted area, just less than 2 km from the Ramanagaram railway station, for photoshoot of a vintage jeep, Railway Protection Force (RPF) sources said.
The youth parked the vehicle on the track. They did not remove the vehicle even after hearing the sirens of the train.
The alerted drivers spotted the jeep and applied brakes. However, it halted after hitting the jeep, sources said.
The youth fled the scene, Ramanagaram police said.
While the jeep was damaged, the engine and track remain undamaged.
The train had to halt for nearly one hour as the technical staff and maintenance personnel of the railways had to issue green signal to move the train.

for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction; the loco (and the train) thus received the same force by which they impacted the jeep.
Because the jeep itself is heavy, owing to its own inertia it would have given very high amount of reaction force before allowing the mechanical force to dissipate throguh its surface.
This is also the reason why many trains on hitting buffaloes/bulls end up getting delayed; the impact of hitting a 1 ton bull/buffalo usually damages the loco, many a times disabling the brake pipe, for instance

and delaying train by hours.

The bi-weekly express has been provided with metallic Braille signages inside the coaches indicating berth numbers, location of alarm pull chains, toilets and emergency windows
The Mysuru-Varanasi Express is set to become the country’s first visually-challenged friendly train when it chugs off from the city on Tuesday.
The bi-weekly express Train Number 16229/16230 which leaves Mysuru for Varanasi on Tuesdays and Thursdays, has been provided with metallic Braille signages inside the coaches indicating the berth numbers, location of alarm pull chains, toilets and emergency windows. The Braille signage also has instructions on the

operation of emergency exit windows for the use of visually challenged in times of any exigency. The initiative was financed by Pratap Simha, Mysuru MP, from the MPLAD Fund. Mr. Simha inaugurated and inaugurated by him on Monday.
Though the Puri-Delhi Purushottam Express was the first train in the country to have a Braille-embedded coach, the Mysuru-Varanasi Express is the first train in the country where all reserved coaches have been embedded with Braille signage, said Rajkumar Lal, Divisional Railway Manager, Mysuru division of the South Western Railways.
“The plan is to extend the facility to all the reserved coaches of long-distance trains in a phase-wise manner,” he added. Braille signage has been introduced on one rake of the Mysuru-Varanasi Express and the facility will be provided for the second rake of the same train as well. The Chamundi Express and the Mysuru-Talguppa Express are other two trains that will be provided with Braille signages after this, said Mr.Lal.
The Mysuru Division, which operates 118 trains, has plans for such signages for all long-distance and express trains.
Ms. Netravati, a visually-impaired person, welcomed the initiative and said that it will help them identify the seats or berths without seeking help from others. “We will be more independent and at times people do not respond properly as they to tend to be in a hurry to locate their berths,” said Netravati.
However, the coach numbers have conventional signage and the plan is to affix Braille signage for the coaches as well, said officials.

The process of finalising the wish list for inclusion in the Railway Budget 2016-17 has begun and the Mysuru Division is expected to submit its demand for new services and projects this month.
Stakeholders have reiterated that, consequent to the completion of the track doubling between Mysuru and Bengaluru, some of their long-pending demands should be met.
The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKKCI) has sought additional connectivity to Mumbai and Ahmedabad – two major commercial centres – in a bid to boost business.

extension of Bengaluru-Mumbai Udayan Express to Mysuru is one of the key demands which has been pending for the last few years. Sources said the prospects were bright this year as the line capacity has been augmented.
Sudhakar Shetty, representative of FKCCI and a member of the Divisional Level Railway Users Consultative Committee, said new services between Mysuru and Bengaluru was a top priority. “To start with, we need an additional train before or after the departure of Chamundi Express from Mysuru and also from Bengaluru in view of the heavy passenger rush,” he said.
There are plans to extend the Kochiveli-Bengaluru express – which originates from Thiruvananthapuram – up to Mysuru, while another service between Kacheguda to Bengaluru, may also be extended up to Mysuru. Besides, an additional weekly night service to Tirupathi is in the pipeline.
The demand for increasing the frequency of Mysuru-Mumbai Sharavathi Express is pending, as also an inter-city super fast express train connecting Mysuru with Hubbali. The Mysuru-Dharwad Express provides direct connectivity but FKCCI said there was potential for another service. The route from Mysuru to Hubbali connects important commercial centres like Arsikere, Davanagere, Harihar, Rannebennur and Haveri.
Direct train to Goa
The other services sought include a direct train to Goa, to provide a direct link to two important tourist destinations. The direct links to some of the commercial centres of central and north Karnataka is reckoned to be important, as an inland container depot for exports will be established at Mysuru (near Nanjangud).
This will be established by the Container Corporation of India and is posed to be the second such facility after Whitefield. A direct link connecting commercial centres will make the container facility more viable.

With track doubling work on the Mysuru-Bengaluru section completed, the public have been demanding additional trains between the two cities.
The Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) has launched a postcard campaign pressing for additional services and more than 600 post cards have been sent to the local MP, Pratap Simha. Another 400 cards will be despatched shortly. MGP volunteers have travelled in trains between Mysuru and Bengaluru to collect signatures of commuters for the purpose.N.S. Pradeep Kumar and S. Yogendra of the parishat have said that the completion of the project has augmented the line capacity by 50 per cent and it was time for the railway authorities to introduce additional services between Mysuru and Bengaluru.

of Mysuru want a train from Bengaluru to Mysuru between 5 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. to reduce the load of Chamundi Express which was running with more than 200 per cent of its passenger capacity,” said Mr. Kumar and Mr. Yogendra.
This is a long-pending demand and the MGP has submitted representations to Mysuru Division and South Western Railway headquarters at Hubballi, apart from elected representatives of the region. The issue was also raised by Sudhakar Shetty at the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee meeting held recently , they added.
Meanwhile, a railway official said that further to commissioning of services on the newly-laid track, the running time of the trains may be progressively reduced. The Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS) has cleared the Naganahalli-Yeliyuru section for a maximum speed of 90 km per hour and the speed limit would be adhered to which will help reduce running time. With the Railway Budget for 2016-17 to be tabled in February, fresh proposals from the division will also be submitted to the Railway Board for consideration and additional trains may be sanctioned in view of the completion of track doubling, the official said.
